We're looking for an energetic, Mechanical Designer to focus on our fast-moving Data Center market. You will work alongside our team of engineers and designers performing field investigations, interfacing with clients & vendors, sizing and selecting equipment, and preparing construction design packages.
You'll be accountable for the schedule and technical quality of challenging engineering tasks as you gain familiarity with the client's expectations, scope, budget, and schedule.  You'll work with a multi-discipline, highly interactive team to establish to meet the needs of our clients.  Your role keeps our company connected, and we'll support you with what you need to be successful.
Highlights of your contributions will include:
* Layout and design of HVAC systems for data center designs.
* Development of the design criteria for the HVAC systems. These HVAC systems would include general comfort heating and cooling, those with accurate temperature or humidity control, unique pressurization requirements, and critical cooling system designs for data center applications.
* Development of conceptual design and preliminary design documents, which would include flow diagrams, and general arrangements.
* Layout of Ductwork systems based on a Process and Instrumentation Diagram (P&ID).
* Development of final design documents including specification, piping layout, and final construction documents associated with these systems. These systems would include chilled water, cooling water, etc.
* Mentoring of less experienced staff.

In this role you will influence all aspects of Mechanical design, construction, operations, and maintenance for our global fleet of data centers. This includes fire suppression, fire detection, fire alarm, and mass notification systems, as well as fire-resistant construction and life safety. You will work with internal and external teams to define, design, detail, and document the various Mechanical features that our facilities require, using both prescriptive and performance-based design approaches. As an Owner, you will strive to ensure the Mechanical features of our buildings protect our people and keep our customer's data safe and uninterrupted over the life of the building. We expect you to contribute your expertise to the continual improvement of our Mechanical design standards.
Primary responsibilities will be to perform and oversee project-related work, such as water supply analysis and design for fire water service to buildings, including coordination with utilities and fire officials to establish basic site infrastructure requirements. The ability to coordinate Mechanical system space requirements, supporting utilities, and equipment locations, and to provide detailed construction specifications for all Mechanical-related trades will be expected. You will typically be responsible for the preparation of detailed designs for HVAC, plumbing, and hydronic systems. You will review all design disciplines to ensure they meet the code requirements described in our design standards. In some cases, you will oversee and review this work and in other cases you will perform the work yourself.
As the team's subject matter expert, you will ensure that contractors have the information they need to build our data centers the way we expect them to, and that our operations teams are well equipped to operate and maintain them as needed to meet our goals. As part of this role you will work with internal and external stakeholders, including design, construction, commissioning, operations, vendors, and other service providers, as well as local building and fire officials. You will be part of a global team, and you will be an integral part of our work to change the world through technology.
Key job responsibilities
- Driving improvement of design standards and project approaches across the organization.
- Work with internal and external design teams to review designs in progress to ensure they meet established design standards, local code requirements, and any other requirements of the Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs).
- Be responsible for providing high quality Mechanical engineering advice on a wide variety of projects globally while working with local engineering teams to achieve alignment of designs and design objectives.
- Coordinating with construction, commissioning, and risk management teams to answer requests for information and value engineering queries.
- Be responsible for construction documents, code compliance, design and installation standards, water supply evaluation and assessment, testing, inspections, and submittal review.
- This position will require up to 25% travel.

Basic Qualifications
- 6+ years of data center design, construction, operations, or facility maintenance experience
- 6+ years of industrial or commercial engineering in mission critical facilities including but not limited to: data centers, power generation or oil and gas facilities experience

Amazon Web Services is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to be part of a global engineering team responsible for ownership and continuous improvement related to data center liquid cooling infrastructure products within our rapidly expanding data center footprint. We seek engineers with hands-on mechanical and manufacturing experience in liquid cooling products. Experience leading cooling product design, understanding cooling principles, and knowledge of quality manufacturing practices is essential. You should comprehend detailed equipment specifications, piping systems, pumping systems, air handler systems and evaluate design change implications.
As a Global Amazon Product Lifecycle Engineer, you'll support AWS data centers' liquid cooling infrastructure. You'll work with product development teams to understand products during development and testing, maintaining engineering ownership throughout operational life. You'll serve as the global engineering resource for liquid cooling AWS infrastructure in data centers.

- Conduct site assessments against AWS standards for collocation data centers, legacy facility upgrades, and general capital endeavors.
- Perform risk analysis and availability calculations for vendor owned and operated collocation data center's infrastructure to determine fit-for-use/fit-for-service.
- Influence AWS' design and specification requirements to meet our business needs for AWS colocation products.
- Lead and investigate and document root-cause failure analysis associated with infrastructure and equipment failures.
- Work with vendors and local agencies having jurisdiction to ensure compliance with federal, state and municipal requirements and codes.
- Collaborate with engineering, operations, and commissioning teams to properly test and validate the installation, operation, and performance of critical electrical/mechanical/fire suppression/controls systems/structural systems.
- Support Operations, data scientists and other business partners to determine utilization, efficiency, and performance analysis on critical systems.
- Travel to Data Center sites as required - International & Domestic (up to 50%)

As part of the global controls team, you will work with highly motivated experts and innovators in the data center industry. You will be responsible for troubleshooting, project management, and maintaining the building management system (BMS) and electrical power monitoring system (EPMS). Using Amazon leadership principles, you will develop new processes and standards while innovating in the controls space.

AWS Data centers have multiple components such as generators, uninterruptable power sources, diesel generators, electrical switchgear, power distribution units, variable frequency drives, automatic/static transfer switches, chillers (air-cooled and water-cooled), pumps, cooling towers, heat exchangers, CRAHs, air economizers, etc. All these components have local control systems that interact with each other via open and/or proprietary communications protocols. The BMS is the primary method of control of all mechanical systems within a data center. The EPMS is the primary method of monitoring all electrical systems within a data center.

Key job responsibilities
As a Data Center Controls Engineer you will:

• Troubleshoot and perform Root Cause Analysis or Corrective Action for BMS and EPMS related issues in AWS data centers.
• Train and assist internal customers and stakeholders with the creation, design, configuration, validation, installation, commissioning and operation of BMS and EPMS systems.
• Provide technical assistance and support to operations during life cycle of the data center.
• Review results and action items from the quarterly maintenances for BMS and EPMS and take actions to get them resolved.
• Develop BMS & EPMS projects scope of work, schedule, budget, and level of efforts (LOE) to projects requested by customers and stakeholders.
• Manage scope, schedule, finance and execution of BMS and EPMS improvement projects in AWS data centers.
• Assist in procurement related activities including request for quotation/proposals, responding to request for information, review of vendors proposal and issuance of purchase orders.
• Participate in AWS global on-call schedule to provide immediate BMS and EPMS technical support to in-service data centers.
• Attend project related meetings, coordinate with project leaders and regularly report status to Controls and stakeholders management.
• Support Controls projects related commissioning activities in the data centers.
• Review, implement, troubleshoot and iterate on the controls sequence of operation (SOO) and provide necessary feedback to the design team.
• Develop and modify controls logic programming and graphical user interfaces.
• Manage multiple stakeholder deliverables, requirements and navigate challenging situations.
• Financially manage BMS and EPMS service contracts.
• Frequently visit (locally) assigned in-operation data centers to troubleshoot, meet customers, supervise vendor’s work to ensure compliance with the scope, design, SOO and applicable local codes.

The base pay for this position ranges from $98,700/year in our lowest geographic market up to $210,800/year in our highest geographic market.
