Tesla hires 600 people a month at plant in Germany

Tesla is hiring an incredible amount of staff for its plant in Germany, adding up to 600 new workers a month.

Elon Musk's electric vehicle giant is working with the national employment agency to recruit workers no longer needed at other car makers for its plant in the Gruenheide district, just outside the capital city of Berlin.

Reuters reports the company has hired 4.100 of the 4,500 staff needed, according to Joerg Steinbach, the German Minister for Economic Affairs, Labour and Energy.

He revealed around 10 percent of the staff are foreign, mainly from Poland.

He said: "The situation of carmakers in other regions realizing that the production of electric cars requires less people than they had in the past is helping us, because we are trying to bring them here to Brandenburg."

He added the Gruenheide plant is running on two shifts from May 23 with a third due to start before the end of the year.

Tesla did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Musk has dominated the headlines recently for his problematic attempt to buy the social media platform Twitter.

The $44 billion bid has involved rows, a lawsuit, and now Musk's threat to pull out completely.

The billionaire has also demanded all staff return to the office and appeared to contradict himself by saying the company will reduce its headcount and then, hours later, saying its "hourly headcount will increase."

Tesla did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
