Disney VFX workers vote to unionize

Visual effects workers at Walt Disney Pictures have unanimously voted to unionize under the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees.

The move follows earlier efforts by VFX workers at Disney's Marvel Studios to join the union.

IATSE International President Matthew D. Loeb lauded the unanimous vote as a "seismic shift in this critical moment in our industry.”

He said: “This unanimous vote sends a clear message that the demands of VFX workers for dignity, respect, and fairness must be heard.”

Historically, VFX workers have remained non-unionized.

The VFX industry has faced challenges from demanding, prolonged working hours.

It’s mainly due to the high demand for big-budget, digital-effects-driven productions in theaters and on streaming platforms

VFX workers have highlighted the absence of protections other unionized workers enjoy.

In the recent union election for Walt Disney Pictures VFX workers, all 13 out of 18 eligible voters voted in favor of unionization, with none opposing the move.

These workers, part of Walt Disney Pictures, have contributed to live-action films such as "Aladdin," "The Lion King," and "Beauty and the Beast."

Negotiations to begin

The next phase involves collective bargaining negotiations between Walt Disney Pictures VFX workers and their employer to establish a contract. 

Although they didn't set a date for these negotiations, the union's win represents a significant step toward improving conditions.

It’ll offer better protections for VFX workers who have long sought the same benefits as their unionized colleagues. 

Mack Robinson, a VFX senior coordinator, said: “For so long we’ve wanted the same protections as everyone else, but there was no hope in sight.

“Winning this election was a long fight, but I’m proud to say it’s been won by each and every VFX worker wanting a brighter, sustainable future.”
