Kaiser to cut 49 jobs in Bay Area and Southern California

Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in East San Francisco Bay Area

Kaiser Foundation Hospitals will lay off 49 employees in the Bay Area and Southern California regions.

The healthcare provider informed the California Employment Development Department of the decision last month.

Christine Neubauer, Kaiser's Human Resources Director, said 21 employees will be eliminated from the Pleasanton location.

Another seven will be laid off from various Oakland sites, and 21 from Southern California facilities.

These non-union positions are administrative roles such as legal, compliance, IT, and human resources rather than direct patient care roles.

However, there are no plans to close any of Kaiser's locations.

The layoffs will officially take effect on November 10, with affected employees notified around September 12.

In a statement, Kaiser said the layoffs are “difficult but necessary.”

One impacted department, the employee services group, recently underwent restructuring, resulting in some of its functions being outsourced.

Kaiser has assured that affected employees can seek alternative positions within the organization.

Those unable to secure an internal position will receive a separation package.

These layoffs occurred shortly after a historic three-day strike by Kaiser healthcare workers.

While the timing is close, it appears unrelated to the strike.

The walk out revolved around alleged bad-faith bargaining by Kaiser during contract negotiations.

The unions representing the workers are scheduled to resume contract talks with Kaiser management in the upcoming week.
