Alibaba's Lazada has started a new round of layoffs across all levels of staff in Southeast Asia.

It will affect employees in various commercial, retail, and marketing roles

The exact number of impacted employees remains undisclosed.

However, reports suggest it could be in the hundreds, with Singapore reportedly experiencing the most significant impact.

Lazada, operating in multiple Southeast Asian countries, did not officially confirm the layoffs.

It said: “We are making proactive adjustments to transform our workforce, to better position ourselves for a more agile, streamlined way of working to meet future business needs.”

Sources said all Southeast Asia markets are affected by the layoffs, which span various functions, and the process would unfold throughout the current week.

Some employees have received meeting invitations from the company, though specific details remain pending.

Lazada, a subsidiary of Alibaba since 2016, faces increasing competition in the Southeast Asian e-commerce landscape.

It’s notably from regional rivals such as Sea Limited's Shopee and TikTok Shop.

The e-commerce company is navigating a challenging market exacerbated by developments such as the partnership between Indonesia's GoTo and TikTok, which combined businesses to create an enlarged Tokopedia entity.

This move was prompted by Indonesia's ban on e-commerce through social media platforms in October, leading TikTok to suspend its e-commerce service, TikTok Shop.

Lazada's latest round of job cuts occurs against a backdrop of leadership changes.

In June 2022, Lazada Group CEO Chun Li was replaced by James Dong, who previously served as the chief executive of Lazada Thailand and Vietnam.

Alibaba, Lazada's parent, faced a turbulent 2023, scrapping plans to spin off its cloud business and undergoing significant management restructuring.
