POSITION SUMMARY
This position is responsible for assisting clinicians and nursing staff in providing medical care, as well as, implementing and evaluating direct patient care. This position utilizes specialized knowledge, judgment and skills to provide an excellent patient experience.
CORE FUNCTIONS
1. Prepares patient for exam and treatment by taking and recording vital signs, symptoms and other necessary measurements and recording chief complaint; documents pain scores as appropriate. Reports condition of patient which may be indicative of change in the patient's condition to the clinician.
2. Assists providers with exams and minor in-office procedures which could include taking patients' blood pressure, documenting respiration and heart rate/pulse, taking temperature, as well as performing phlebotomies, ear irrigation and EKG's. Acts as chaperon as needed. Uses universal blood and body fluid precautions at all times and personal protective equipment as needed. Responsible for prioritization of patient flow through clinical process.
3. Coordinates and manages patient care including pre-certifications, referrals, authorizations, prescriptions and scheduling of patients for clinic, hospital and other ancillary medical treatments and tests. Responsible for communicating test results to patient. Acts as a resource to clinician in order to provide optimal patient care. May administer medications in accordance with established policies and procedures or as directed.
4. Provides clerical support with patient/client notifications and documentation to include but not limited to complete medical records including labs, authorizations, X-Rays, hospital records and any previous care pertaining to each patient visit. Provides complete and accurate information necessary for billing related to the patient encounter in a timely fashion.
5. Maintains a clean, functional environment including cleaning and disinfection of equipment, exam rooms and storage areas. Disinfects equipment and instruments using appropriate solutions following sterilization procedures. Follows manufacturer's recommendations and OSHA guidelines in handling of hazardous substances. Performs basic maintenance of equipment and coordinates needed maintenance for prompt repairs.
6. Orders supplies as directed, stocks patient care areas. Medication ordering and tasks related to all medications (e.g. expired medications/equipment and recalls).
7. Develops and maintains effective communication mechanism with all external and internal customers. Exemplifies service orientation and the team concept in all contacts.
8. This position will complete all necessary on-boarding/orientation activities, including simulation training, as needed or directed.
9. This position works under the direct supervision of the providers. This position interacts with all levels of staff in a variety of departments, physicians, patients, families and external contacts, such as employees of other health care institutions, community providers and agencies, concerning the health care of the patient. Also interacts with physician's offices in order to report, ask for or clarify information. Prioritizes data from multiple sources to provide support for the response of the patient and family to changes in health status.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma/GED or equivalent working knowledge. Completion of an approved medical assistant training program as defined by state regulations.
Active Medical Assistant Certification is required. Certification or additional training must meet the requirements for Meaningful use. BLS certification required. Active Medical Assistant certification such as: Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) with proof of current membership from American Medical Technologists (AMT) or Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) with proof of current membership from American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) or Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) with proof of current membership from National Health Career Association (NHA) (Test administered after 7/1/2017 only) or National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA) with proof of current membership from National Certified Competency Testing (NCCT).
Requires strong computer skills, including the ability to work with medical software. Requires exceptional interpersonal and communication skills. Requires the ability to manage multiple changing priorities in an effective and organized fashion.

**Summary:**
The Medical Assistant is responsible for assisting Physicians, Mid-Level Practitioners, and Registered Nurses with the evaluation, management, and treatment of patients in an ambulatory care setting. The Medical Assistant assumes responsibility for maintaining patient flow, the upkeep of exam and treatment rooms, and performing basic skills such as vital signs and point of care testing. In addition, the Certified Medical Assistant will administer intramuscular injections, immunizations, small volume nebulizer treatment, over-the-counter medications under the direction of a Physician. **Required Job Qualifications:**
- High school diploma/GED required.
- Clinical Medical Assistant Certification by AAMA, AMT, NCCT, NAHP, AAH, or NHA required (includes principles and techniques of injections and medication administration) required upon hire.
- Graduates of a Rush Medical Assistant Apprenticeship program are required to obtain Clinical Medical Assistant Certification by AAMA, AMT, NCCT, NAHP, AAH, or NHA required within six months of hire.
- Current CPR certification required upon start date.

**Responsibilities:**
1. Coordinates and maintains organized patient flow.
2. Performs patient intake: vital signs, height and weight, reason for visit, interim history, allergies, medication lists, and other interventions as required.
3. Prepares patient for exam based on reason for visit.
4. Prepares and supports patient and assists provider with procedures.
5. Reviews appointment schedules and ensures all patient charts are available for the visit.
6. Reviews patient charts and ensures that all ancillary reports and required paperwork are available to the provider at the time of visit.
7. Performs basic lab and testing procedures according to standards.
8. Performs phlebotomy and EKGs.
9. Administers immunizations as ordered by Physician.
10. Administers RUMG approved intramuscular or subcutaneous medications after competency has been assessed, verified and documented.
11. Performs nebulizer treatments in the clinic setting after competency has been assessed, verified and documented.
12. Performs Tuberculin skin testing upon the order of the Physician.
13. Demonstrates appropriate population specific techniques with patients.
14. Documents administration of over-the-counter medications and/or other medications in Epic per policy or protocol.
15. Cleans, prepares and stocks exam rooms, treatment rooms, and workstations.
16. Calls patients regarding test results and medical instruction under the direction of a Physician.
17. Calls in medication refills under the direction of a Physician or protocol.
18. Documents patient care information in the outpatient medical record according to standards.
19. Assists with scheduling of patient tests, procedures, and follow-up appointments.
20. Assists in the care, cleaning, and sterilization of equipment and instruments.
21. Maintains the inventory of medical and linen supplies.
22. Maintains quality control for equipment.
23. Provides cross coverage to other clinical areas as assigned.
24. Participates in quality improvement projects.
25. Maintains compliance with The Joint Commission (TJC) standards and other regulatory bodies.
26. May have Unit specific duties as needed.

The successful candidate:

The back office Medical Assistant assists the provider (Physician, Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner) in examination and treatment of patients by performing the following duties.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

- Completes intake by welcoming patients and prepares patients for healthcare visit by placing patient in exam room, obtains medical history and verifies patient’s information.
- Responsible for documenting a full and accurate set of vital signs.
- Populates all sections of the electronic medical record timely and accurately, including but not limited to allergies, medications, vaccines, social history and quality tab.
- Assists providers during examination and treatment, performing point of care tests appropriate to skill level, certifications and state regulations.
- Maintains supplies in storage areas and exam rooms.
- Disinfects, cleans treatment rooms following patient examinations; Maintains safe, secure, and healthy work environment by establishing and following standards and procedures; complying with legal regulations.
- Conducts business in a service-oriented manner that is attentive, cooperative, sensitive and respectful with all patients, visitors and colleagues.
- Responsible for pre-visit planning per the standard operating procedure guidelines.
- Maintain all logs and required checks (i.e. refrigerator temperatures, emergency medications, expired medications, oxygen, etc.)
- Responsible to checking and addressing voicemails multiple times during the working day.
- Responsible for addressing inbox messages (buckets) in the electronic medical record for providers, provider staff and self.
- Back-up front office when needed including check in, check out, appointment scheduling and answering phones.
- Maintain a professional working relationship with vendors that support the practice.
- Follow HIPAA guidelines for all internal and external systems.
- Ability to communicate appropriately with awareness of surroundings and audience.
- Attends trainings and meetings as required.

Minimum Education and Experience:

- Nationally recognized as a Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) strongly preferred
- Strong computer skills required. EMR experience preferred
