Microsoft Cuts Staff In Mixed Reality Division

Microsoft building in Bellevue

Microsoft is laying off employees in its mixed reality division, impacting those who work on the HoloLens 2 headset.

However, the company has said sales and support for the device will continue.

This move reflects a strategic shift towards artificial intelligence (AI) within Microsoft.

This comes a year after Microsoft’s previous round of layoffs, which impacted 10,000 employees, including some in mixed reality.

While the HoloLens has not achieved major commercial success, Microsoft maintains its commitment to the modified version used by the US military

It continues developing the Mesh feature for collaborative video calls in mixed-reality headsets.

Over 1,000 employees are being let go, with mixed reality being one of the affected areas.

This decision highlights a clear shift towards AI.

Microsoft is heavily investing in AI features like Copilot and ChatGPT, integrating them into productivity applications.

There’s no news on a new HoloLens model, but Microsoft will continue selling and supporting the current version.

This news coincides with Apple’s recent launch of its augmented reality headset, the Vision Pro.
