It has solar panels capable of powering the warehouse during certain periods of the year.

Lidl is also pledging to fuel its entire delivery fleet with biogas from food waste, underlining its dedication to eco-friendly practices.

The German discounter said the warehouse could "fit three of Lidl's existing warehouses inside."

It has a daily capacity to handle over 9,400 pallets of goods destined for its 150 stores.

This facility represents a significant expansion for the company, as its existing distribution centres typically service around 60-80 stores.

The Bedfordshire warehouse is the first Lidl GB facility to incorporate automation, enhancing storage capabilities and contributing to job creation.

Jeremy Hunt, Chancellor of the Exchequer, said: "It's fantastic to see Lidl investing in the UK and creating thousands more well-paid jobs... businesses can be confident that investing in the UK is the right decision."

Lidl, a part of the Schwarz retail group, operates a vast retail network comprising approximately 12,200 stores across 31 countries.
