The retail chain will hire customer assistants across the UK.

This hiring drive marks a substantial 40 percent increase compared to last year's Christmas recruitment efforts.

The company is mainly looking to increase colleague hours to provide help to customers on the shop floor.

These roles will be distributed across M&S's food and clothing, as well as home business divisions.

The business said there are vacancies in every store.

The recruits will support customers and facilitate the delivery of M&S's popular Christmas Food to Order service.

Starting November 19, the new colleagues will join in various positions which will offer flexible working patterns.

M&S operations director Sacha Berendji said: “Our fantastic store colleagues play such a big part in delivering the magic of M&S at Christmas to our customers.

“And this year we’re recruiting even more colleagues to ensure there’s always someone on hand to offer support and recommendations.

“The Christmas period is a busy but exciting time for M&S and no two days are the same – in fact, many colleagues started their M&S careers at Christmas and have since gone onto progress across the business.”
