OpenAI and global news publisher Axel Springer are partnering to integrate news summaries into ChatGPT.

The development comes as creators, artists, and publishers take legal action against companies using their content to train generative AI models.

This includes a lawsuit filed by authors such as John Grisham and George R.R. Martin against OpenAI for alleged copyright infringement.

Under the OpenAI-Axel Springer agreement, ChatGPT will deliver news article summaries upon user queries.

The chatbot will draw news content from outlets like Politico, Business Insider, Bild, and Welt.

Additionally, it will feature articles typically exclusive to subscribers, providing proper attribution and links to the full articles for transparency.

OpenAI collaborated with the Associated Press in July, where it licensed the AP's news archive for training data.

This partnership leverages Axel Springer's media brands to enrich the training data for OpenAI's extensive language models, including GPT-4.

It is a key component in powering ChatGPT.
