EU warns Elon Musk of “disinformation” on X over Hamas-Israel war

The European Union has warned Elon Musk about disseminating "disinformation" on his platform, X, following the recent Hamas-Israel conflict.

Thierry Breton, Commissioner for the Internal Market of the European Union, called attention to the failure to remove "violent and terrorist content" from the platform.

In a letter posted on X, Breton urged Musk to take effective measures and report on the actions in response to the crisis.

Breton didn’t provide details about the disinformation in his letter.

But he mentioned the widespread circulation of "fake and manipulated images and facts" on social media.

This communication comes after an attack by the Palestinian militant group Hamas on Israel, resulting in the loss of many lives.

In retaliation, Israeli forces launched numerous missile strikes on Gaza, causing significant loss of life.

In his response on X, Mr Musk said: "Our policy is that everything is open and transparent, an approach that I know the EU supports.

"Please list the violations you allude to on X, so that the public can see them."

Breton reminded Musk that he was "well aware of your users' - and authorities' - reports on fake content and glorification of violence"

He said it’s up to Musk to "demonstrate that you walk the talk."

The European Union Digital Services Act (DSA), aims to safeguard users on major tech platforms.

The law was enacted in August, with the EU designating the largest online platforms, including X, as being subject to the strictest rules.

Under these regulations, large firms must assess potential risks they may pose, report their findings, and implement measures to address the issues.

Non-compliance with the DSA can result in big fines, potentially reaching 6 percent of a company's global turnover or even service suspension.

Notably, Musk disbanded Twitter's Trust and Safety Council shortly after he acquired the platform in 2022.

This volunteer council, formed in 2016, included around 100 independent groups that guided on issues like self-harm, child abuse, and hate speech.
