YouTube announces 100 layoffs

Youtube sign outside company headquarters

Video giant YouTube, is cutting 100 employees as part of its ongoing effort to streamline operations.

YouTube's chief business officer, Mary Ellen Coe, wrote in a memo: “We’ve made the decision to eliminate some roles and say goodbye to some of our teammates.

“Anyone in the Americas” and the Asia-Pacific region “who is or may be impacted will be notified by the end of day today.”

As of Tuesday, January 16, YouTube employed 7,173 people.

Sources said the layoffs primarily target support roles for YouTube's vast community of content creators

The platform has faced challenges recovering from an advertising slowdown over the past year and increased competition from platforms like TikTok, especially among younger users.

Major Google job cuts

The tech industry has already been rocky this year, with Google axing thousands of jobs last week.

Last week, Google eliminated over a thousand jobs from various divisions.

It includes its core engineering division, Google Assistant, and some augmented reality projects.

In a note to employees, Sundar Pichai, Google's CEO, told them to brace for more cuts throughout the year, although not as extensive as the previous year's.

With over 182,000 employees as of September, Google has seen major staffing changes, with a workforce increase from 119,000 in December 2019 to its current level.

Companies like Discord, Amazon, Xerox, and Unity Software have announced layoffs in the new year.

YouTube, known for its revenue from video ads, faced a setback in growth due to an advertising slowdown in late 2022.

Despite efforts to boost revenue through subscription services like YouTube TV and music streaming, ad sales are yet to return to their previous growth rates.

Affected YouTube employees will have a 60-day window to explore new roles within the company before their dismissals become official.
