Ultium Cells plans to add 400 more jobs in $275 million Tennessee factory expansion

Battery maker Ultium Cells will invest an additional $275 million in a Tennessee factory which will create 400 extra jobs.

This will take the total number of jobs 1,700 when the facility is fully operational.

The project aims to increase battery cell manufacturing at its Spring Hill facility.

Ultium Cells is a joint venture of General Motors and South Korea-based LG Energy Solution.

The expansion is part of GM's plans to bring more electric vehicles to market.

Ultium Cells said when the factory is fully functional, it will boost battery cell output by more than 40 percent.

This investment is in addition to the $2.3 billion investment announced by GM and LG in April 2021.

The 2.8 million-square-foot factory will begin production late next year.

Tim Herrick, GM’s vice president of EV Launch Excellence said: “Ultium Cells will play a critical role in making GM’s commitment to an all-electric future a reality.

"This investment will help GM offer customers the broadest EV portfolio of any automaker and further solidifies our path toward U.S. EV leadership.”

Ultium Cells said it will provide battery cells to GM's Spring Hill assembly factory in the coming years for the construction of the Cadillac Lyriq SUV and other GM Ultium-based EVs.

It has already begun hiring for the Spring Hill location.

Ultium Cells is also currently investing $2.6 billion in the construction of a factory in Lansing Delta Township that will begin production in 2024.

The firm aims to supply enough battery cells to achieve GM's goal of producing one million EVs in North America by the middle of the decade.

It will also assist GM in supplying battery cells to other automakers and industries like rail, aerospace, heavy trucks, and marine.
