Job Description

ICON is seeking a Manufacturing & Assembly Technician to join our manufacturing team. In this role, you'll play a critical part in building the next generation of our 3D printing technology. You'll work hands-on across key production areas, including assembly, fabrication, and paint, bringing together purchased and fabricated components into fully functional systems. This position requires a team-oriented mindset, attention to detail, and a commitment to safety, quality, and standard operating procedures. This role will report to our Senior Manager of Manufacturing Production and will be based at our Austin, TX campus.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Maintain a safe, clean, and organized work environment while ensuring proper use of materials and tools.
  • Assemble complex mechanical and electrical systems with precision and care.
  • Support production efforts through troubleshooting, rework, in-process repairs, and continuous improvement documentation.
  • Operate, adjust, and perform minor preventative maintenance on manufacturing equipment to ensure optimal performance.
  • Perform quality inspections and functional testing of components and finished assemblies throughout the build process.
  • Collaborate closely with engineering teams to implement and improve manufacturing and testing procedures.
  • Accurately document build results and observations during engineering and development phases.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION
  • 3+ years of hands-on mechanical and electrical assembly experience in a production or prototyping environment.
  • Proven experience assembling and testing manufactured goods.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and familiarity with hand and power tools.
  • Ability to read and interpret drawings, models, schematics, and work instructions.
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced, factory setting with frequent changes in direction.
  • Physically able to lift up to 50 pounds and work at heights above 10 feet.
  • Proficient in basic computer skills and capable of recording data using digital tools.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with excellent attention to detail and organizational habits.
  • A collaborative team player with the ability to follow both verbal and written instructions.
  • Adaptable, self-motivated, and passionate about building and innovating in a hands-on environment.
PREFERRED SKILLS & EXPERIENCE

The Role We’re a startup delivering our Instrument and platform to early-adopting customers this year. We’re choosing to manufacture in-house instead of contracting it out overseas to ensure quality and allow us to keep experimenting. The Manufacturing Assembly Technician is a key member of the Manufacturing team, and will be literally assembling, calibrating, and testing our Instrument from top to bottom. It’s a fairly repetitive role, and for someone who likes the challenge of piecing together a big puzzle every day that involves moderately difficult electromechanical systems, combined with the knowledge that your hands are building the tech of the future, it will be a great fit. This role requires attendance during normal working hours between 9-5, 5 days a week in the Boston Seaport area. Day to Day and Year 1 Building the Instrument, Testing, Calibrating, and performing Quality checks Packaging and shipping the machine to customer labs Add support building the consumables (simpler assembly, but more dextrous work) during downtime Within 3 months you’ll … Complete onboarding, understand the product Be able to competently build, calibrate, and test with little to no oversight By 6 months you’ll … Have built and shipped an Instrument to a customer, and be participating in logistics improvement cycles. You will be authoring new and updating existing SOPs. You will also begin to be knowledgeable enough to facilitate debugging and testing machines in use at customer sites or within our internal development lab. At 12+ months you’ll … Actively support the growth of the Manufacturing team. Start stepping into a larger role as you mentor the junior technicians. Contribute to continuous process improvements Qualifications High School Diploma or GED required. Associates Degree or other 2-year technical diploma preferred OR 5+ years of military training and experience testing, and troubleshooting of large military platforms to be considered in lieu of technical diploma. 1-2+ years experience in a manufacturing environment that involves assembling products with any combination of electronics, robotics, or mechanical components Have experience debugging and repairing electrical components using soldering irons and multimeters. Must be proficient with electrical reworks such as cable repairs, and surface mount and through hole PCB reworks. Must use and understand the application of common hand tools, various industry nomenclatures, and have strong assembly skills. Must be a self-starter who looks for ways to improve the job and related processes and shows initiative in execution. Working knowledge of spreadsheets, creating, manipulating, and using for data analysis. Demonstrated proficiency developing work instructions, documenting testing procedures and processes. Self-managed your day-to-day areas with minimal supervision, while completing tasks with high quality output and timely delivery A strategic eye for ways to improve a manufacturing system Familiarity with ERP and PLM software is a nice-to-have that supports future projects this role will own. This is a full-time position that requires a significant amount of in-person work and collaboration onsite at our Seaport Office in Boston, MA. **YOU WILL BE ACCOUNTABLE FOR (Responsibilities):**
+ Performs routine electronic, mechanical, technical tasks such as constructing, troubleshooting, calibrating, adjusting, testing, repairing, and maintaining electronic and mechanical equipment, tubes, microwave products, electro-mechanical devices, components, and systems. Works from schematics, engineering drawings, written or verbal instructions.
+ Operates related electronic, mechanical, and laboratory equipment necessary to construct, test, evaluate, repair, process, weld, and maintain specific products and equipment.
+ Prepares prescribed compounds and solution for use in processing, etching, and metalizing materials.
+ Performs calibration and alignment checks on electronic or mechanical equipment. Works from schematics, engineering drawings, written or verbal instructions.
+ Conducts routine engineering tests and detailed experimental testing and reports data in prescribed format.
+ Designs and improvises simple electronic and mechanical tools, fixture and equipment as required.
+ Performs analyses of rejected, returned, and in-process microwave tubes in support of engineering and manufacturing as required.
+ Repairs circuit boards, instruments, or instruments for customer as required
+ Develops skill and knowledge in specific product or equipment
+ Performs other related tasks as assigned.
**YOU ARE THE RIGHT PERSON FOR THIS JOB IF YOU HAVE THESE PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:**
+ Typically requires an AA degree in related technology or equivalent technical training plus four (4) years of related experience.
+ Must have working knowledge of appropriate theoretical principles and processes encountered in assigned field.
+ Must have knowledge of TIG/GTAW welding, the ability to read mechanical drawings, and strong attention to technical detail.
+ Must have a high level of manual dexterity for hand tools and be able to use a microscope.
+ Ability to evaluate and recommend improvements in techniques and processes.
+ Ability to lift objects weighing up to 30 lbs.
+ Ability to operate a hand crane to lift items weighing more than 30 lbs.
+ Strong verbal and written communication skills. Proficient with the Microsoft Office Suite and generally tech-savvy. Willingness and ability to further develop Excel and other technical skills in the future.
+ Must be a U.S. citizen and eligible to obtain a DoD security clearance.
