In this position.
The Staff Battery Cell Engineer will be responsible for cell level concept generation, cell selection, and optimization work. You will create strategy to analyze holistic battery life cycle and business approach through multiple stages of development starting from the block diagram architecture phase.
What you'll do.
- Cell chemistry and form factor selection for future products
- Craft strategic vendor engagements, and provide insight into supply chain management team
- Define DC Fast charge limits, and influence cell design to increase abilities
- Perform and collect cell characterization data
- Work with manufacturing team to optimization cell and production equipment together. Generate DFM feedback in the process
- Develop trade space of cost vs customer experience in regards to battery design
- Optimization models for cell selection and powertrain optimization (MATLAB)
- Cell performance model for vehicle performance estimates (MATLAB)
- Perform mechanical cell design work (terminals, jelly role, vents, structure, electrolyte, etc.)
- Design cells for impact resistance and thermal runaway management
- Generate first principles "Should Cost" for cells
- Generate cell testing requirements
- Initiate and collaborate in cell R&D workstreams, in addition to, reuse and recycling efforts
- Define durability and end of life requirements
- Root cause and trouble shooting cell related items in prototype and production
- Create robust design for automotive application and for mass manufacturing
- Lead and contribute to design reviews and requirements reviews to further optimize the powertrain system cross functionally
- Support presentations of concepts and status to senior management and internally to company personnel in an integration and subject matter expert role
- Drive powertrain innovations of future technologies that provide benefit to the product; both short- and long-term roadmap items.

- Mechanical / Chemical Engineering degree or Physics degree or equivalent experience
- Masters degree, PhD preferred

This position will work a typical M-F schedule, with rotating on-call weekend support and will be expected to travel up to 20% depending on business needs. Although not routine, this role may require standing for long periods of time, climbing up and down ladders, bending, grasping, sitting, pulling, pushing, stooping, and stretching. The role may require lifting up to 25lbs. unassisted.
Key job responsibilities
- Be the first point of contact between production, test, and design teams for operational support and triage of issues during battery cell testing and manufacturing
- Work to implement new tests, processes, and tools to aid the manufacturing, shipping, and testing of battery cells (destined for satellite battery pack build)
- Identify and implement opportunities to improve quality, efficiency, and robustness of all processes
- Develop standard repairs, rework procedures, propose design for manufacturing (DFM) improvements, improved processes and work instructions; and training for new operators and technicians

This Manufacturing Engineer will be providing engineering support to keep cell production test running smoothly. Basic Qualifications

**Your Role on Our Team**
The Engineering Technician will be responsible to support the new product development, technology evaluations, warranty investigations, and root cause analysis for lithium-ion cells. As part of this position, you will also organize and interpret test results and maintain laboratory equipment.

  • Manage cell engineering budget and tracking equipment/facility and test resources for cell validation/characterization
  • Develop and integrate all Cell engineering related timelines to cross functional teams (BCS, BMS, T&V, Design, ME) and vehicle timing.

  • Support overall design of pack/module layout, in collaboration with a widely cross-functional team of stakeholders from vehicle, service, manufacturing, systems, cell, and other teams. Design pack to meet requirements for strength, integrity, cost, weight, and to meet performance attributes
  • Release cost/weight/part/design data into Rivian formal part release system
  • Co-ordinate and manage Design and Release Engineers to have production release plans in place and executed with no late releases and no late parts for the build phases.
  • Ensure Engineering Documentation is coordinated and managed to project milestones - Risk assessment/management, Requirements, DFMEA, DVP, Functional Safety.
  • Vehicle Builds - Manage and co-ordinate all BOMs, and support purchasing as needed with part procurement, sourcing, etc. for all build phases.
  • Work with engineering team and vehicle program to define piece cost, investment cost and weight targets

Key Responsibilities:

The position of Process Engineer Battery Cell Build Lead is a critical role that leads the prototype cell build operations at our company. The Company is developing and scaling its novel silicon anode lithium- ion battery technology, and this role is central to that initiative. Battery cell prototypes are used for technology development, product validation and customer deployment. The roles primary focus is to lead a team of Battery Assembly Operators to coordinate, prepare materials, set up equipment and build lithium-ion battery cells while implementing and maintaining key process and quality control methods. Lithium-ion battery cells are built using hand assembly and semi-automated pouch cell stacking, welding and heat-sealing equipment. The Process Engineer will work in a research and product development setting with core functions of the role including, but not limited to the following:

  • Set up, operate and maintain semi-automated lithium-ion cell manufacturing equipment for prototype cell formats ranging (80mAh single layer to 20Ah multilayered pouch cells).
  • Design and develop tooling and manufacturing fixtures targeting high quality and repeatable processes.
  • Build upon and lead implementation of existing APQP (Advanced Product Quality Process) documentation including Process flow, PFMEA and Control Plans.
  • Develop and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs), Work Instructions and Travelers for the build processes and quality documentation.
  • Support team with hands on lithium-ion cell fabrication and management of the process flow.
  • Promote a safe work environment and enforce PPE, cleanliness and 6S practices.
  • Work with stakeholders in the company to schedule and execute battery builds as prioritized by Research and Product Development.
  • Ensure quality standards are well defined, communicated and executed to the Cell Build Team.
  • Routinely work in clean / dry room or glove box environment.
  • Maintain a continuous improvement register and continually drive optimization of the processes.
  • Chart and track key process characteristic and quality metrics.
  • Devise lab-scale experiments to validate critical processing methods for lithium-ion cell prototyping such as thermal heat sealing, ultrasonic metal welding, die cutting and vacuum drying.
  • Support build and maintenance of equipment to ensure and communicate results.
  • Maintain manufacturing quality database and update and communicate results.
  • Train operators in new and existing cell build and manufacturing operations.
  • Be dedicated to safety practices to ensure prevention of workplace injury or accidents.
Qualifications:
  • BS degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical or related technical field.
  • CAD experience in SolidWorks or similar software to generate 3D models and 2D component drawings.
  • 3-5+ years working experience in a research, product or manufacturing role.
  • 3-5+ years in a lithium-ion battery or electrochemical product development role a plus.
  • Proficiency using computer functions to document, record and present data.
  • Exceptional organizational, verbal, and communication skills.
  • Motivated and driven to solve problems, work with a high level of detail and care and continually improve processes required to reduce variation and strive for zero defects.
  • Ability to work in dry room and glove box environments while standing for an extended period.
  • Strong work ethics and positive working attitude.
