UAW launches union drive at Honda and Subaru

The United Auto Workers has started union-organization campaigns at Honda Motor and Subaru.

The union is asking employees to sign authorization cards expressing their desire to be part of the UAW. 

UAW has posted links on social media for workers at Honda and Subaru in the US to fill out online forms supporting UAW representation.

The UAW’s push reflects a broader effort beyond traditional targets like General Motors, Ford Motor, and Chrysler-parent Stellantis.

The UAW needs at least 30 percent of workers to sign authorization cards to formally petition the National Labor Relations Board for a unionization vote. 

This comes amid declining union membership, with UAW leaders aiming to reverse the trend and capitalize on recent contract wins in Detroit.

Honda is reportedly giving many US factory workers an 11 percent pay increase.

It is making improvements following significant gains secured by the UAW in Detroit last month. 

The Japanese automaker also offers a base wage increase effective in January and reduces the time to reach the top wage.

This aligns with concessions won by the UAW in negotiations with other automakers. 

The move demonstrates the ripple effect of labor wins in Detroit.

Toyota Motor is also raising wages for most US factory employees by 9 percent and shortening the time to reach top pay. 

UAW President Shawn Fain has asserted plans to leverage these victories to organize nonunion plants owned by foreign car companies.
