Elon Musk Sues OpenAI For Choosing Profits Over Benefitting Humanity

Elon Musk

Elon Musk has sued OpenAI and its CEO, Sam Altman, for prioritizing profit over humanity's welfare.

Musk co-founded the artificial intelligence research.

He has helped launch and fund the AI startup in its budding stages, which was established in 2015

His lawyers claim Musk invested time, money, and recruiting resources in the company.

They say this was based on conditions it would be "dedicated to creating safe, open-source AGI for public benefit."

Filed in San Francisco's Superior Court, Musk's lawsuit demands that OpenAI make its research publicly available.

It seeks to prevent the company, its executives, and its financial backer, Microsoft, from profiting from OpenAI's advancements

Musk is also seeking unspecified damages, pledging to donate any awarded funds to charity.

The complaint underscores a growing debate around OpenAI's transition from a nonprofit to a profit-driven entit.

There is now widespread attention and investment following the release of ChatGPT.

This shift has raised concerns about the pace of AI product releases and their potential safety risks.

The lawsuit claims Musk invested over $44 million between 2016 and 2020.

Musk's lawyers also said he played a key role in the recruitment.

This included hiring Ilya Sutskever, who left Google to be the chief scientist at OpenAI.

Musk has also criticized OpenAI's products for perceived biases.

In July, Elon Musk launched his own AI venture, xAI, aimed at advancing AI that "assists humanity in its quest for understanding and knowledge."
