Amazon Fined In Italy Over Unfair Practices
Italy's antitrust authority has imposed a 10 million euro ($10.7 million) fine on two Amazon subsidiaries for alleged unfair commercial practices, the regulator announced on Wednesday.
Reuters reported the authority accused Amazon of "significantly restricting consumers' freedom of choice."
This was by setting the 'Subscribe and Save' option as the default selection for various products on its platform.
This setup reportedly inclined consumers to subscribe for regular deliveries instead of making single purchases.
An Amazon spokesperson said: "The pre-ticking of recurring purchase induces one to periodically buy a product - even without the effective need - thus limiting one's freedom of choice.
"Every day customers benefit from the Subscribe and Save program by saving money and time on regular deliveries of items they routinely use."
