Asda to increase staff pay to £12.04 an hour

Asda Supermarket on the High Street in Ramsgate, Thanet, Kent, UK

Asda has announced a £150 million investment to boost the wages of over 120,000 employees by 8.4 percent.

This initiative positions Asda as the highest-paying grocery retailer in the UK.

The supermarket set the basic hourly wage for its retail staff at £12.04 and £13.21 for those working in stores within the M25 area.

This pay raise is proactive ahead of the forthcoming national minimum wage increase in April, from the current £10.42 to £11.44.

Asda's current pay rate stands at £11.11 per hour, or £12.28 for employees within the M25.

It plans to adjust wages to meet the new national minimum in April before implementing the more substantial pay rise in July.

The trade union Usdaw, representing Asda workers in Northern Ireland and Asda Express, has supported the proposed pay rates.

Mohsin Issa, Asda co-owner, said: “This record investment will see Asda become the highest paying grocery retailer in the UK, recognising the hard work of our store colleagues in serving customers every day.

“We want to be a company that people are proud to work for, which is why we are proposing increasing pay for retail and Express colleagues by more than 8% this year.”

This announcement aligns with Asda's celebration of opening its 1,000th store in Stevenage, UK.
