Elon Musk could need surgery before Mark Zuckerberg cage fight

Mark Zuckerberg & Elon Musk

Elon Musk's much-discussed "cage match" with Mark Zuckerberg might face further uncertainty as Musk said he may need surgery before the proposed showdown.

The tech moguls seemed to agree to an in-person face-off in late June, sparking speculation about a physical confrontation.

While the likelihood of such a fight remains unclear, Musk and Zuckerberg have continued stoking curiosity through online exchanges.

Musk even mentioned that the fight would be live-streamed on his social media site, X, formerly Twitter, with proceeds benefiting a veterans' charity.

Zuckerberg responded: “Shouldn’t we use a more reliable platform that can actually raise money for charity?”

In a follow-up post, he said he wasn’t “holding his breath” for a fight.

Zuckerberg wrote: “I’m ready today. I suggested Aug 26 when he first challenged, but he hasn’t confirmed.”

The Meta boss is trained in mixed martial arts and posted about completing his first jiu jitsu tournament earlier this year.

He added: “I love this sport and will continue competing with people who train no matter what happens here.”

Musk may have injury

Musk shared that he was training for the fight by lifting weights, yet an MRI has potentially complicated his plans.

He wrote: “I’m getting an MRI of my neck & upper back tomorrow. May require surgery before the fight can happen. Will know this week.”

If surgery is necessary, the timing of the fight would be impacted.

The origin of the fight talk dates back to June, when Musk's X responded to a tweet about Meta launching a new Twitter rival named Threads.

Musk's response led to a playful back-and-forth, ultimately resulting in the proposition of a cage match.

While the seriousness of the proposed showdown remains uncertain, the playful banter between the magnates has captured public attention.

It led to a flurry of memes and "choose your fighter" posts across social media.

Musk does have a record of announcing things that haven't ever happened, so the status of the fight remains uncertain.
