The primary duties of a Sr Power Systems Controls Engineer are to provide engineering services for the design and implementation of Microgrid Applications. These engineering activities are to provide power control system engineering services associated with the design of the low and medium voltage Distributed Energy Resources (DERs).
Minimum Qualifications: (Education, Experience, Knowledge, and Skills)
- Education: Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or related technical field from an accredited university.
- Experience: Minimum of 10+ years of experience in a power systems engineering environment.
- Knowledge and Skills:
- Advanced understanding of power generation and distribution.
- Advanced understanding of solar/renewable energy equipment/system deployment, integration, and troubleshooting.
- Basic field communication experience (Modbus, DNP3).
- Prior experience designing/implementing Microgrids with diverse DERs is highly preferred.
- Knowledge of digital multifunction relays for power protection to meet electric utility requirements (Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories, Beckwith).
- Experience with Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) with preferred manufacturers (Emerson, Siemens).
- Experience with DER asset controllers (Woodward, ComAP).
- Ability to travel up to 15% of the time.
- Strong analytical, communication, and organizational skills with a desire for continuous improvement.
- Proficient with ladder logic programming, SFC, and structured text or equivalent.
- Advanced understanding of UL1741 SA/SB.
- Proficient acting as a system integrator and understanding high-level operation.
- Experience working in a lab environment to validate system components.
- Understanding of the NEC and NFPA110.
- Basic networking experience.
- Ability to interact with peers and management.
- Experience with 2-D CAD software (AUTOCAD preferred).
- Evaluate new controller offerings.
- Lead controls design on new solutions.
- Provide engineering estimates to the application engineering team.
- Confirm and review drawings to align proposed solutions to current standards.
- Coordinate and communicate with other engineering groups, sales, marketing, and operations.

- Support standards development for various applications, including:
- Simple Automatic Transfer Controls between two sources.

- Collaborate with peers to develop standards and base files for complex power and control schemes.

Serve as the OPC technical advisor with defining and standardizing the predictive and preventive maintenance programs (CMMS/Maximo) for power plant electrical systems and equipment across the OPC fleet.

Provide Subject Matter Expertise with technical review for design of new power plant systems or modifications to existing power plant systems with the review and comment of drawings, specifications, design memoranda, and service contracts/agreements.

Provide engineering support to ensure OPCs compliance with NERC Reliability Standards. This includes NERC PRC and MOD electrical testing program and its related reporting to enable compliance with NERC/SERC standards.
Required Qualifications:
Education: Bachelor's degree in engineering or engineering technology (preferably BSEE) - Technical and business knowledge of generating plant operation, performance and economics.
Experience:
- 10+ years minimum engineering and five years minimum preventive and predictive maintenance experience in an operating commercial electric power generating plant required, including planning, budgeting, preventive and predictive maintenance and maintenance analysis.

The incumbent is on-call 24 hours in the event of incidents that affect the operation, rating, or reliability of the Corporation's generating assets.

ECI has immediate openings for power systems engineers of all experience levels to join our Planning and Studies team. If you have experience performing planning studies for electric utilities or are currently involved with detailed study of renewable power or heavy industrial systems, we want to hear from you.
The position responsibilities include performing a variety of electrical studies that may include steady state loadflow, short circuit, transient analysis, harmonics, insulation coordination, and dynamic system response studies. We use tools such as PSS/e, PSLF, ASPEN Oneliner, PSS Cape, PSCAD, and EMTP-RV - experience in these not required - related experience in tools such as TARA, ETAP, SKM, PowerWorld, EasyPower considered applicable.
Many but not all the studies will be related to large scale (50 -2000+ MW) renewable energy projects (wind, solar, energy storage). Our team helps customers with project conceptual development, support during design, equipment selection and assistance with plant operating issues after COD. We assist with apparatus ratings and specifications development for EHV/HV/MV/LV transformers, circuit breakers, switches, cables, switchgear, inverters, wind turbines, DC and AC aux power systems, etc.
We also provide services to large and small utility and industrial clients. These studies can involve typical transmission level load additions, long range plans, generation interconnections, black start analysis, voltage unbalance/line transposition analysis, breaker TRV assessments, insulation coordination studies, etc. We have a separate distribution planning group as well.
Minimum Requirements:
- BSEE (MSEE and PhD are desirable)
- 1+ year performing any one of the following studies:
