Keith L. Shoji, insurance staff counsel for State Farm Insurance Companies, is seeking an Attorney to join the Ontario, California Claim Litigation office. While every day can provide different experiences and opportunities, the role involves case ownership, participating in litigation events, and meeting with clients. As a result of not being billed by the hour, our attorneys have the opportunity to strategize on trial and case development as it passes through litigation. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to

  • Handle litigation and other legal assignments in accordance with guidelines established by the Law Department
  • Prepare and summarize reports for proceedings
  • Trial strategy and case development
  • Attend litigation events including trials, mediations, depositions, and hearings

Qualifications

Previous experience required

  • 1+ years of experience
  • Litigation experience, preferably in the practice areas of insurance defense, medical malpractice, personal injury, workers compensation, or an Assistant Public Defender, or Assistant State Attorney
  • Trial experience is a plus, but not required 

Key skills required

  • Knowledge of local and state discovery rules, trial procedures, and applicable substantive law commensurate with level of experience
  • Trial, mediation, and deposition experience
  • File ownership
  • Effective written and oral communication skills

Technology/software experience required

  • Ability to work efficiently with cases in electronic form
  • Working knowledge of a Case Management system
  • Working Knowledge of a Document Storage system

Education requirements including licenses and certifications

  • Must have an active law license to practice in the state of California and a member in good standing with the State Bar of California.

  • Legal Consultations: Conduct primary consultations with clients to assess legal needs, and provide clear explanations of legal rights, options for the clients, and possible results of their cases.
  • Case Management: Will manage a caseload of legal matters ranging in family law, housing, employment, and immigration. Pro Bono Legal Advisors will also be responsible for drafting legal documents, petitions, and correspondence.
  • Advocacy and Representation: Provide clients with representation in court hearings, administrative proceedings, and negotiations while advocating for clients' rights and best interests.
  • Community Education: Organize legal workshops and informational sessions for clients, and raise awareness about legal rights and resources that are available.
  • Collaboration: Pro Bono Legal Advisors will work together with other Thaddeus Resource Center staff, volunteers, and external legal partners. Pro Bono Legal Advisors will also be required to participate in case conferences and multidisciplinary team meetings.

Requirements:

  • Must currently reside in California.
  • Licensed Attorneys are required to be admitted to the California State Bar, and be experienced in relevant legal areas.
  • Licensed Attorneys must be able to show empathy and compassion to create a connection with diverse clients and understand their unique circumstances.

As a Senior Counsel in the R&D Innovation Legal group, you will support AbbVie's R&D organization in navigating enterprise-critical issues in an evolving legal and regulatory environment as we work to bring new, innovative products to patients. This individual will be supporting our pipeline strategies to develop next generation assets to improve the standard of care for patients. A successful candidate will be motivated by the opportunity to address and solve emerging issues with a strategic and creative business-oriented approach and provide expert counsel on decisions impacting our long-term pipeline strategies.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and provide strategic counsel to senior leaders within the R&D and corporate strategy organizations on legal and regulatory issues that impact pipeline development, government agency engagement and product innovation. Technical degree preferred to advise on intersections between law and scientific/innovation approaches to drug development.

  • Embedded within the Specialty and/or Aesthetics therapeutic areas to contribute as a key member of disease area strategy teams responsible for long-term R&D and innovation strategies. Focus is on pipeline development and the FDA and IRA considerations when assessing strategic approaches. This is not a role focused on FDA advertising and promotional considerations.

  • Educates other AbbVie legal departments and business stakeholders on emerging laws, regulations and industry trends impacting AbbVie pipeline and R&D early stage discovery and product development.

  • Proactively identifies highly complex legal issues related to assigned matters, develops creative and alternative solutions, and implements resolution.

  • Adopts a business oriented and creative approach to problem solving.

  • Advises senior leadership. Recognized by these clients as both expert in substantive area and relied upon for individual advice.

Qualifications

  • Must possess a Juris Doctorate, currently be admitted to the bar in at least one U.S. state and meet the professional licensing requirements of the state in which you practice. Technical degree in life sciences or related subject is preferred.

  • Minimum of 7+ years of relevant experience practicing in-house at a pharmaceutical company, practicing as a member of a nationally recognized law firm in a life sciences practice, or practicing as an attorney for a government agency, or any combination of the above.

  • Knowledge and understanding of pharmaceutical laws and regulations impacting drug development, rather than promotional considerations, to help business clients assess issues in a highly regulated landscape.

  • Experience advising companies on the Inflation Reduction Act and broader Medicare Drug Pricing Program is a plus.

  • Must have excellent executive presentation skills and be comfortable presenting complicated information accurately and concisely to senior leaders.

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and lead cross-functional teams collaboratively.

  • Ability to adapt to a changing environment while handling multiple priorities.
