Full Job Description

Our client, a major player in the energy sector with a significant refining operation, is seeking a skilled Refinery Operations Technician to join their facility in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, US .

As a Refinery Operations Technician, you will be responsible for monitoring and operating complex refining equipment and processes to produce petroleum products. This role requires technical aptitude, attention to detail, and a strong commitment to safety and environmental regulations. You will work as part of a team, often on rotating shifts, to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the refinery units.

Responsibilities:
  • Monitor and control refinery process units using control systems (e.g., DCS - Distributed Control System).
  • Operate valves, pumps, compressors, furnaces, and other refinery equipment according to procedures.
  • Conduct regular rounds in the refinery to inspect equipment, identify potential issues, and collect data.
  • Take samples of process streams and perform basic laboratory tests.
  • Respond to alarms and abnormal operating conditions, taking appropriate corrective actions.
  • Communicate effectively with other operators, supervisors, and maintenance personnel.
  • Follow strict safety protocols and procedures (e.g., Lockout/Tagout, Confined Space Entry).
  • Troubleshoot operational problems and assist in diagnosing equipment malfunctions.
  • Record process data, operational events, and maintenance needs in logs and reports.
  • Assist with equipment startups, shutdowns, and changeovers.
  • Participate in safety meetings and training programs.
  • Ensure compliance with environmental regulations and permits.
  • Perform minor maintenance tasks as needed.
  • Respond to emergencies and participate in emergency response procedures.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area.
  • Understand process flow diagrams (PFDs) and piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs).
  • Mentor and train less experienced operators.
  • Continuously monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) for the unit.

Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate's degree in Process Technology, Chemical Engineering Technology, or a related field preferred.
  • Minimum of 2-4 years of experience in refinery operations or heavy industrial process operations (e.g., chemical plant, power plant).
  • Strong understanding of chemical processing principles and thermodynamics.
  • Experience operating and monitoring process control systems (DCS).
  • Knowledge of refinery equipment and unit operations (e.g., distillation, cracking, reforming).
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Commitment to safety and environmental regulations.
  • Ability to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Ability to climb stairs and ladders and work at heights.
  • Ability to lift and move moderate weight.
  • Strong problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Residing in or near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
