Title: Seasonal Field Technician (Seasonal position through November 30th with a potential extension through May 31, 2026)
Reports to: Field Technician Supervisor
Location: Los Angeles, CA
Job Type: Full-time, Seasonal position, Non-exempt, 32 hours per week
Founded in 2014, Bicycle Transit Systems (BTS) is a woman-owned business with a mission to operate bike share systems that create connections in our communities and protect our planet. We operate and manage a portfolio of bike share systems across the United States, as well as a nation-wide customer service call center. We are currently looking for an exceptional Field Technician to join our Downtown, Los Angeles team!
The Field Technician (Tech) will assist with the maintenance of stations and bikes. The Field Tech will perform routine station and bike maintenance, cleaning, balancing of bikes, and station installations. Field Techs will work under the guidance of their direct supervisor to ensure that all stations and bicycles are maintained and cleaned in accordance with our routine maintenance schedule. Field Techs will respond to system balancing needs on a proactive and reactive basis. The Field Tech will also work directly with Station Technicians, Mechanics, Customer Service, and Dispatch teams to perform minor station and bicycle repairs in the field. Field Techs will be courteous drivers who understand the importance of safe driving.
Core Responsibilities:
- Maintain stations (troubleshooting, some replacing of parts, swapping batteries, cleaning) in accordance with company policy and standard operating procedures (SOP’s).
- Drive Ford Transit or equivalent extended wheelbase to complete daily tasks.
- Distribute bikes throughout the system to ensure bike stations are appropriately stocked through guidance from Dispatch.
- Collect bicycles requiring in shop work.
- Inspect and ensure bike stations are safe, clean, and operating properly.
- Interact with bike share passholders to promote bike share to the general public and assist the Marketing team at events and in the field.
- Receive and follow daily task directions provided by Dispatch team.
- Perform regular in-field monthly safety checks on bicycles and in-shop bicycle maintenance.
- Assist with bike and bike station deployment and redeployment.
- Maintain frequent and clear communication between Dispatchers, Station Techs, and direct supervisor.
- Work with other team members under the guidance of Dispatch, and/or Lead Field Tech, Operations Manager.
- Execute all required balancing and station maintenance and cleaning in a timely manner in order to meet our SLA and safety goals.
Additional Responsibilities:
- Open and close warehouse, as assigned.
- Graffiti and sticker cleanup at stations.
- Ride E-cargo bikes routinely to complete daily tasks.
- Communicate with Dispatch to give updates on conditions at stations and in coverage area. Respond to Dispatch in accordance with company’s communication policy.
- Assist with installation and removal of bike sharing stations.
- Assist with asset recovery.
- Communicate with Fleet and Facilities Coordinator, direct supervisor and/or Operations Manager about van mechanical and safety issues.
- Complete service records for all work performed in accordance with company SOP’s.
- Communicate with other staff and supervisors to affect improvements.
- Give and receive feedback to other team members.
- Provide assistance within warehouse bicycle repairs, builds, and refurbishments.
- Other duties as assigned.
Daily Tasks:
- Check Fiix for any assigned, pending, or late tasks.
- Check in and communicate continuously with Dispatch on prioritization for balancing, station maintenance, and other assigned duties and tickets.
- When out in the field, perform inspections of stations (ex: Check Dock, digitizer, CC reader, etc.).
- Clean station and bicycles of graffiti, sticker, grime, and biohazards during each station visit.
- Conduct E-bike and station battery swaps.
- Perform field safety checks on bikes at stations
- Attend daily operations meeting, check emails, and respond to calendar invites.
Weekly Tasks:
- Clean and organize facility.
- Clean vehicles.
- Test batteries.
- Test “malfunctioning” hardware.
- Power wash Stations.
- Take inventory of all supplies.
- Participate in weekly meetings.
Monthly Tasks:
- Check all stations for any issues.
- Overview of performance metrics, operational metrics with Lead Field Tech and/or Operations Manager.
- Participate in group meetings.
- Power wash stations.
- Perform monthly bike inspections.
Education and/or Work Experience Requirements:
- Valid driver license and clean driving record that passes insurance requirements for the company.
- Strong Communication and interpersonal skills.
- Excellent mechanical skills, and some experience in bicycle maintenance and/or willingness to learn.
- Must be a team player with a positive and friendly attitude.
- Ability to follow instructions, respond to management’s direction and solicit feedback to improve performance.
- Excitement and interest in bike sharing.
- Proficiency with computers and the ability to learn new software.
- Ability to understand and learn technical aspects of the software and the hardware capabilities and needs of a bike share system.
- An eye for safety in everyday tasks.
- Sense of humor!
Physical Requirements and Special Demands:
- Frequently bend, stoop, and twist throughout the day
- Requires the ability to regularly lift objects up to 65+ lbs. and carry objects of this weight for distances up to 150 feet.
- Requires the ability to perform work while standing for prolonged periods of time.
- Repetitive motion required of the wrists, hands, or fingers occasionally throughout the workday.
- Will require working and riding a bicycle outdoors in various temperatures including rain, cold and heat conditions.
- Comfortable driving, stopping and working in busy outdoor urban environments.
- Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance in accordance with company and department policy.

This role will be an integral part of our team as we continue to solidify our position as a leading bicycle dealer in our local areas.
The Role:
The Bicycle Mechanic - Level II (BM2) plays a critical, consumer-facing role at Main Street Cyclery. You will provide friendly, efficient service to customers in need of all manner of repair and maintenance on their bicycles. Additionally, the mechanic assists in providing customer service to sales and rental customers when necessary. The BM2 is responsible for the opening and closing of the repair shop facilities, review and updating daily work orders assigned to them in the Lightspeed operating system, executing repairs and maintenance as directed by work orders, building new bikes for floor display as directed by management, and providing customer service and rental assistance as needed throughout normal shop operation hours. Due to the seasonal nature of the bicycle business, the mechanic understands that they may be needed for additional hours. The bicycle mechanic II is often the main point of contact with the customer base, and as such should operate with a service first mindset, ensuring all store/repair customers have a superior experience during their visit to Main Street Cyclery.

Qualifications:
The successful candidate will provide a resume or other document highlighting their experience as a bicycle mechanic or bicycle specific training/education they have received which qualifies them for this highy-technical role. Job responsibilities will include but are not limited to the following:
Open/prepare repair shop for daily maintenance upon arrival.
Re-organize customer bikes in for repair and rental bike stock (where applicable) as needed each day upon arrival to ensure an efficient working and sales environment in the repair area.
Review Lightspeed work order schedule and check MSC Slack for daily direction on repair and maintenance orders received.
Receive bikes in for repair from customers, providing clear and concise explanations of recommended repairs while customer is present.
Review work orders received previously from other staff members to ensure accuracy of information provided to customers.
Communicate with customers as needed via telephone, email or text; before and during repair process to ensure recommended work is approved prior to work start.
Communicate with customers when work order is complete and advise them of pick-up
As needed: provide sales and customer service support to customers on the sales floor - Upwards of 20% of the time.
Build new bikes for merchandising on the MSC sales floor.
Additionally, the successful candidate will have a history of operating with a high level of integrity both personally and professionally. He/she will treat customers and co-workers with respect and be an agent for positive change within the company.
