Job Description
A Physical Therapist (PT) is a healthcare professional who evaluates, diagnoses, and treats individuals with physical impairments or disabilities. Physical therapists help patients restore mobility, manage pain, and improve their quality of life through targeted exercises, manual therapies, and specialized techniques. They work with individuals recovering from surgery, injury, or illness, providing rehabilitation and preventative care to promote physical health and function.
Key Responsibilities :
- Assessment and Evaluation :
- Conduct initial patient evaluations to assess their physical abilities, range of motion, strength, coordination, and overall mobility.
- Review medical history and diagnostic tests (e.g., X-rays, MRIs) to understand the patient's condition.
- Establish baseline data regarding a patient's physical capabilities to create a tailored treatment plan.
- Developing Treatment Plans :
- Develop personalized treatment plans based on the patient's condition, goals, and progress.
- Identify short- and long-term rehabilitation goals, focusing on improving strength, flexibility, coordination, and endurance.
- Collaborate with other healthcare providers to develop a comprehensive treatment approach, including recommendations for surgery or medication, if necessary.
- Providing Therapeutic Interventions :
- Implement various physical therapy interventions, such as strengthening exercises , range of motion exercises, balance training , manual therapy , and modalities (e.g., heat, cold, ultrasound, electrical stimulation).
- Educate patients about proper posture, movement techniques, and body mechanics to prevent future injury.
- Provide guidance and support to patients performing exercises both in the clinic and at home to ensure they are doing them correctly.
- Patient Education and Support :
- Educate patients on the importance of following their prescribed physical therapy regimen and explain how therapy will aid in recovery.
- Teach patients strategies to manage pain and promote physical wellness through techniques like stretching, strengthening exercises, and ergonomic modifications.
- Offer guidance on lifestyle changes that may improve function, such as weight management, stress reduction, or joint protection techniques.
- Collaboration and Communication :
- Work with other healthcare professionals, such as doctors, nurses, and occupational therapists, to coordinate care for patients.
- Provide regular updates to the interdisciplinary team on patient progress and changes in treatment plans.
- Communicate with patients and families, providing education and support throughout the treatment process.
- Monitoring and Reassessing Progress :
- Regularly assess the patient's progress and adjust the treatment plan as necessary to ensure optimal results.
- Document the effectiveness of therapies and make recommendations for changes based on patient feedback and observed improvements or setbacks.
- Perform re-evaluations to track progress, modify goals, and ensure that treatment is advancing in the right direction.
- Documentation and Reporting :
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date patient records, documenting evaluations, treatments, progress, and changes in the patient's condition.
- Ensure compliance with healthcare regulations (e.g., HIPAA ) and insurance requirements.
- Complete required documentation for insurance billing, progress reports, and discharge summaries.
- Prevention and Wellness :
- Develop and implement injury prevention programs to help patients reduce the risk of future injuries.
- Promote physical wellness and functional independence through health education and the development of long-term fitness goals.
- Encourage patients to adopt a more active lifestyle and engage in exercises that will improve their long-term health outcomes.
- Advocacy and Community Resources :
- Advocate for patients to ensure they receive the necessary equipment and assistive devices (e.g., wheelchairs, prosthetics, walkers).
- Guide patients in accessing community resources, support groups, and programs to continue their rehabilitation or physical wellness after discharge.

**PEOPLE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS**
+ Collaborates and coordinates patient care needs, such as referrals, consults, equipment, clinical appointments, home care, etc. with other departments or agencies during treatment and at discharge.
+ Delegates appropriate patients, supervises, and communicates pertinent information to the physical therapist assistant and physical therapy technicians in accordance with the state practice act and department and hospital policies.
+ Effectively communicates with the patient, family, physician. In sports/orthopedics, communicates with coach regarding the patient's ability to return to practice and/or competition.
+ Provides contributions towards improvement of department scores for employee engagement, i.e. peer-to-peer accountability.
**SERVICE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS**
+ Performs patient and family education on home exercise, safety, self-care, etc. and distributes appropriate hand-outs.
+ Delegates appropriate patient care duties to, communicate with, and supervise the performance of support personnel.
+ Works in an integrated manner with the inter-professional health care team in the provision of exercise and treatment modalities. (
+ Contributes to meeting/exceeding department and organization targets for patient satisfaction.
**QUALITY/SAFETY ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS**
+ Documents patient evaluations, treatment notes, re-evaluations/re-assessments, discharges, and charges appropriately in the computer system in a timely manner.
+ Performs examinations, evaluations, diagnosis, prognosis and interventions in accordance with physical therapy practice act and in collaboration with referring providers.
+ Identifies and escalates issues and opportunities for improvement. Follows up on action items to ensure completion of assignments. Contributes towards improving department/practice quality and safety scores.
**FINANCE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS**
+ Uses resources efficiently and effectively. Self-motivated to independently manage time effectively, minimizing incidental overtime, and prioritize daily tasks.
+ Maintains accurate and complete documentation of patient education and procedures performed in a timely manner in the patient record which includes appropriate billing codes and enters changes for services provided.
**GROWTH/INNOVATION ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS**
+ Participates in clinical education programs as approved by the Faculty Advisor. Remains current on professional issues and clinical skills by attendance of appropriate clinical education programs, CEUs and involvement with professional organizations. Ensures own career discussions occur with appropriate management.
+ Assist in the organization and direction of specific activities of the department as delegated by the Program or department leadership which may include research projects, department improvement projects, or other special tasks. Presents relevant special topics in professional literature at clinic meetings, grand rounds, conferences, and meetings as delegated or requested by the faculty.

**EDUCATION**
+ Graduate of education program approved by the credentialing body for the required credential(s) indicated below in the Certifications, Licenses and Registrations section.
**WORK EXPERIENCE**
+ One year of experience preferred.
+ Clinical setting/internship experience in applicable area (i.e. sports, acute care) preferred
**LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS - REQUIRED**
+ PT - Physical Therapist - State Licensure within 30 days **OR**
+ PT-Temp - Physical Therapist Temporary - State Licensure -- Compact Privileges granted by the Texas Board of Physical Therapy Examiners within 30 days **AND**
+ BLS - Basic Life Support (AHA)
