EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION

Required

  • Education High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Experience Must be able to read, write and communicate in English. Familiarity with medical terminology. Working knowledge of basic computer software skills. 1 year acute care inpatient hospital experience in the role preferred or a certified nursing assistant certificate and experience in the role or completed the PCT residency at UT Southwestern Medical Center or completed Nursing Fundamentals and skills course in nursing school.
  • Licenses and Certifications (BLS) BASIC LIFE SUPPORT course accredited by the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC) required. Must achieve validation of required core competencies and training within 6 months of employment.

JOB DUTIES

  • Provide patient care under the direction of nursing staff being certain to only perform tasks in which training and/or competency has been validated.
  • Collect, monitor, and document pertinent data relating to patient functioning and care to include but not limited to: intake and output, weight, temperature, pulse, respirations, and blood pressure. Recognizes and immediately reports values outside normal parameters to the nurse.
  • Perform patient rounding being sure to report any changes in a patient's condition or behavior immediately to the nurse. Seeks assistance and guidance as needed to ensure that patient care is delivered in a safe, high quality and effective manner at all times.
  • Assess, identify, and monitor environmental, patient, and the patient's family needs in a respectful, positive, and timely manner to achieve satisfaction.
  • Perform basic hygiene care in accordance with the Department of Nursing policies, procedures and unit standards to include but not limited to pericare, oral care, daily hygiene, linen changes, skin changes, and foley care.
  • Transfer and transport patients in accordance with policies and procedures with specific consideration to age-specific and safety needs.
  • Resolve patient concerns by initiating service recovery and immediately escalating patient, family, visitors and staff concerns through the chain of command.
  • Build meaning and sustainable relationships of trust through open and interactive communication with members of the healthcare team.
  • Prepare, update, and disseminate reports at the change of shift and when changes are noted in the patient's condition.
  • Support the administrative and clinical operations of assigned practice environment.
  • Orient new staff and students to work areas. Collaborates with other nursing staff and hospital employees to create an environment that is conducive to the retention of qualified personnel.
  • Utilize downtime to assist others and/or to provide additional supportive measures to patients and/or patients' families within the respective patient care environment. Completes other duties as assigned. Performs in the role of sitter as needed, documents as required.
  • Maintain current compliance with ongoing annual education requirements (modules, classes and competencies).
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Our Patient Care Technicians provide high-quality patient care to patients suffering from the most advanced stage of chronic kidney disease, known as END Stage Renal Disease (ESRD). As a PCT you will monitor patients before, during, and after dialysis treatment including measuring and recording stats, initiating cannulation, patient observations, and hemodialysis machine setup. Work Experience
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Must have a desire to care for people and be comfortable working around blood and needles.
  • Experienced PCTs must have current certification from BONENT, NNCC, or NNCO or if applicable other state approved certification.
  • Experienced PCTs are required to have current BLS/CPR certification.

Patient Care Technician

Assist the nurse and respiratory therapist in patient care delivery of patients ranging from zero to 18 years old and assist in managing the customer service experience during the patient stay within the organization.

Responsibilities:

  • Prepare rooms for patient admission with appropriate equipment and supplies based on age and needs of patient; perform basic patient care tasks including baths, vital signs, positioning, ambulating, appropriate disposal of hazardous waste, and documentation of intake/output or other tasks delegated by the registered nurse (RN) within the scope of job duties.
  • Has the ability to perform advanced patient care tasks if assigned by their respective areas.
  • Respond quickly to patient and family needs and problem solve appropriately in collaboration with the RN; maintain a safe patient environment at all times and transport stable patients to procedures or testing within the Children's Medical Center physical building requiring minimal therapy needs in addition to patient discharge.
  • Assist in emergency situations by initiating BLS, continuing chest compressions, and/or participate as a runner; assist with unit regulatory readiness as assigned (including code cart checks); demonstrate skills as identified on the unit-based competency checklist, document legibly and completely.
  • May perform other duties as assigned.

How You'll Be Successful:

Education:

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent required.
  • For non-nursing students, completion of a certified nurse assistant (CNA), basic Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), Paramedic or Medical Assistant (MA) program/training is required.
  • For nursing students, actively enrolled in an accredited nursing program is required.

Work Experience:

  • One (1) year of experience as a CNA, EMT, or Medical Assistant preferred.
  • For the ED and PICU/CVICU, one (1) year of field experience as a paramedic or EMT preferred.

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers as required by CP 1.20 Life Support Course Requirements is required.

The Patient Care Technician performs various duties under a licensed nurse's supervision. Helps deliver patient care and meet family needs. Follows the care plan, considering the patient's age and development stage.
**Essential Functions of the Role**
+ Collect and record patient data, record vital signs and help patients with activities of daily living (ADL).
