As a Corrections Officer, you will be responsible for the safety, security, and supervision of inmates in the Cumberland County Jail in Portland, Maine. You will also be responsible for monitoring and enforcing regulations, managing inmates' behavior, and providing guidance and support. Job Responsibilities

  • Maintain security and safety of correctional facility, inmates and staff;
  • Conduct rounds to ensure adherence to regulations and procedures;
  • Monitor inmates’ activities and enforce disciplinary actions;
  • Search inmates and their living quarters;
  • Escort inmates to court hearings, medical appointments, and other destinations;
  • Monitor and record inmate behavior and document violations;

Position Summary
The Juvenile Corrections Officer I is responsible for overseeing the intake, processing, and confinement of juveniles suspected and/or convicted of unruly and/or criminal activity. Job Summary

This position is 40 hours per week.

This position is an entry-level position responsible for the health and welfare, safety and security of juveniles detained at the Juvenile Detention Center. Duties include supervising, monitoring, and providing care for juvenile offenders and other court-involved youth in a confined, 24-hour maximum security facility. Work is assigned, scheduled and evaluated under the general direction of Detention Shift Supervisors and in conjunction with the Juvenile Court Management team.

TOTAL COMPENSATION: 61,240 - 85,707 annually. Total compensation is an estimate based upon base compensation, median retirement fund contributions, and current employer-paid health and related benefit contribution rates (including medical, dental, life insurance, long term disability, and leave).   • Serves as a positive role model for juveniles detained at the center.

  • Leads group and individual discussions; teaches classes to encourage law abiding behavior; reports on behavior of youth; and works in coordination with Probation staff, Medical and Treatment staff, Teachers, Community Agencies, Judges, Prosecutors and Defense Attorneys.

  • Searches (pat downs and strip) and removes personal property.

  • Reviews social files and gathers information to establish criteria for admittance or release from detention; and completes the appropriate forms.

  • Contacts parents, guardians, caseworker, probation counselor or parole counselor; and consults with supervisor on releases and shift problems.

  • Provides orientation on facility rules and regulations.

  • Provides for health, safety and recreation needs of juveniles in the Juvenile Detention Facility.

  • Checks security of building, doors and windows; and maintains the safety and security of juveniles while detained.

  • Oversees youth movement, including meals, showers, room clean up, school, physical training and recreational activities while maintaining safety and security for youth and staff.

  • Provides positive individual and group supervision of juveniles participating in programming and attending to their needs.

  • Escorts youth to and from court while providing security in court.

  • Follows medical orders when dispensing medication to juvenile offenders.

  • Speaks with and de-escalates youth in crisis while maintaining safety and security; intervenes in emergency or crisis situations; and uses physical restraint as necessary to restore order.

  • Maintains and submits written documentation of all incidents concerning youth.

  • Performs janitorial and maintenance tasks related to maintaining physical condition of building; and performs laundry duties.

  • Performs admission and release functions; and maintains records.

  • Serves and occasionally prepares meals; and orders kitchen food and cleaning supplies.

  • Performs other related duties as required/assigned.

Minimum Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.

  • One (1) year working in adult corrections or with youth in a setting such as detention, probation/parole, residential care, recreation, education, community center, institutional, counseling, or a related area required.

  • Must possess and maintain a valid Driver’s License.

  • Applicants selected for Juvenile Corrections Officer positions will be required to successfully complete the two (2) week Washington State Criminal justice Training Commission Corrections Officer Academy within the first six (6) months after appointment or within their probationary period.

  • Must possess and maintain a valid Food Handlers Card.

  • First Aid, CPR and AED certification required.

For employees with less than five (5) years of continuous service, the accrual rate is 1 day of vacation each month for a total of 12 days per year. After six (6) months, employees are eligible to take accumulated vacation time. (Please note the vacation time accumulation may vary depending on contract language).

Sick Leave

Sick leave is earned at 1 day per month and can be taken as the days are accumulated.

Other Leaves

Spokane County provides several other paid leaves such as: bereavement leave, jury duty and military duty leave.

Provides an income protection benefit in the event of a long-term illness or injury at rate of 60% of income up to a maximum of 5,000 per month. Spokane County pays the full premium for this plan. Deputy Sheriff's receive a benefit through their union for disability.

RETIREMENT

Retirement Plan (401a)

Spokane County employees are automatically included in the Washington State Retirement System. Both the employer and the employee contribute to the plan. This retirement plan provides a guaranteed lifetime monthly benefit once vested and eligible for retirement.

Additional Retirement Plan Option (457b)

Employees may supplement their retirement income and save money on taxes by participating in this optional County program. Roth (after-tax) option is also available through this retirement plan.

VOLUNTARY BENEFITS

AFLAC

Supplemental insurance is optional and is provided by AFLAC to help pay for benefits not covered by major medical insurance. The employee pays 100% of the premium.

Travel Assistance

Schedules transportation for appointments and visits outside of the facility; transports and arranges transport for prisoners; documents all transports; delivers mail and allows prisoners to make personal and legal phone calls.

Patrols and inspects the correctional facility for contraband, sanitation and orderliness.

Supervises and observes persons visiting prisoners.

Maintain records of institution's activities including log book and incident reports.

Transport and escort prisoner to court and other appointments.

Perform the booking and releasing processes.

Essential Duties:

Provides direct supervision and interaction with juvenile detainees by: verbally resolving conflict between juveniles, identifying and observing group agitators and gang members. Identifies juvenile groups and gangs to anticipate potential problems. Recognizes behavioral characteristics of a violent offender. Identifies unrest among juveniles. Monitors / logs behavior of juveniles in disciplinary segregation. Uses physical force or manual /chemical restraints on juveniles when required. Verifies the identity of officer and juvenile detainee exiting/entering the facility. Controls entry into the detention area by video and computer monitoring of exits. Physically patrols tiers, cell areas, corridors and other secured areas inside and outside of the facility to ensure building security during non-business hours and to observe juvenile behavior. Maintains key security. Provides limited court room security for in custody children cases. Escorts and provides security for juveniles outside of the facility either by motor vehicle or foot. Performs pat-search and strip searches on juveniles. Searches clothing/property left for juveniles. The Riverside County Probation Department is currently recruiting for Probation Corrections Officers to fill multiple vacancies throughout Riverside County. This recruitment is for full-time positions.

Under direct supervision, receives training and acquires skills in supervising and caring for youths in detention and/or treatment facilities of the Riverside County Probation Department; and performs other related duties as required. Positions in this class are defined as peace officers in Section 830.5 of the California Penal Code and are subject to selection and training standards as defined by the California Government Code and the Board of State and Community Corrections.

The Probation Corrections Officer I is the entry-level and trainee classification within the Probation Corrections Officer series and typically reports to a Supervising Probation Officer. Incumbents are expected to have an aptitude for supervising the activities of a group of youths in a detention or treatment environment. Incumbents are assigned routine functions associated with the general operation of a living unit. The Probation Corrections Officer I differs from the Probation Corrections Officer II in that the latter are assigned the more difficult and complex counseling duties requiring an understanding of those factors affecting a minor's motivation and behavior.

• Keep the unit logs and other written information up to date; register and store personal belongings; search detainees, rooms, living areas, and facility grounds for weapons and other contraband; check detainees for marks, bruises and infections as required.

• Conduct room checks and/or directly observe detainees in accordance with Board of State and Community Corrections (BSCC) guidelines.

• Attend, participate, and pass courses in powers of arrest, search and seizure, and defensive tactics.

• Type reports, document detainee activity/behavior and retrieve data and information. OPTION I
Education: Graduation from high school, possession of a Certificate of Proficiency issued by the California State Board of Education or attainment of a satisfactory score on a G.E.D test.
Experience: None required.

All candidates will be required to take and pass the Probation Corrections Officer test prior to being considered for any Probation Corrections Officer I position.

Knowledge of: Individual and group counseling techniques; the development, needs and problems of detainees; methods and techniques of effective group supervision; facilities, rules, procedures, and policies relating to detention care and treatment of detainees standard health practices and first aid.

Ability to: Establish and maintain rapport with detainees; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with a variety of department staff, government, business, community officials, and community-based organizations; learn techniques for collaborative problem solving and for supervising and guiding groups of detainees under detention; learn and apply basic first aid techniques; exercise good judgment in stress situations; follow oral and written directions; speak and write effectively.

Assessment: Minimally qualified candidates will be required to pass a computerized assessment in order to be considered for this position.

License: Possession of a valid California Driver's License.

Legality for Employment: Be a citizen of the United States, or legally authorized to work in the U.S or a permanent resident alien who is eligible for and has applied for U.S. citizenship.

Age: Candidates must attain the age of 21 years prior to the completion of the background process. Applicants aged 20½ years may apply for the position, test, and proceed to the background process.

Prior to employment, candidates must successfully complete a thorough criminal background investigation involving both fingerprinting and use of a Computer Voice Stress Analyzer (CVSA), physical examination, including vision and hearing tests, and psychological evaluation. A felony or misdemeanor conviction may disqualify the applicant from County employment. Candidates cannot currently be on court-ordered summary or formal probation. Upon completion of the Probation Corrections Officer Core training, candidates must pass the physical agility requirements mandated by the Standards and Training for Corrections (STC).

Applicants with uncompleted educational requirements may apply, test, and proceed to the background investigation while in the process of completing the educational requirements. Under the supervision of a Utah Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST) training facility, incumbents in this position are in a training mode for the period required to obtain Utah Peace Officer Certifications, to include: Special Functions Officer (SFO); and Basic Corrections Officer (BCO) or Law Enforcement Office (LEO).
