JOB TITLE:
ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR, UNIVERSITY DISABILITY SUPPORT SERVICES
JOB PURPOSE:
Assist the Director of the Disability Support Services Office with the overall management, personnel, and operational functions; responsible for directing the daily operations of the DSS Office in the Director's absence; provide professional assessment including interpreting medical documentation, one-on-one meetings with students, and services provided to campus community, as well as outreach and educational workshops.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist with or act on behalf of the Director, Disability Support Services (DSS), which includes directing the daily operations of the DSS Center, its services, staffing, and recording keeping, and assisting in personnel, budget, and policy issues as needed, in accordance with the University of Wyoming policies and procedures affecting DSS.
- Use high level judgment and discretion in the application of federal regulations and case law, working collaboratively to develop individualized support plans that address the unique needs of each student while promoting academic success.
- Instruct, train, and aid in the supervising of staff hiring and performance of team members. Manage the provision of accommodations services (e.g. interpreters, note-takers, alternative material formats, test accommodations, etc.) for a caseload of students and supervisees.
- Provide advocacy for UW community members with disabilities with faculty, staff, and administration.
- Provide leadership and liaison with Student Health, University Counseling Center, Dean of Students, Campus Recreation, and Student Success & Graduation. Interpret university policies and procedures and advise students, parents, faculty, and administrators on curriculum substitutions, course and test administration policies, class material adaptation and other accommodation strategies.
- Provide leadership and assistance in the development of maintaining high-level judgment and discretion in the application of federal regulations and case law to determine appropriate accommodations on a case-by-case basis. Prepare reports and documentation as needed (monthly, by semester, annually). Maintain accurate and confidential records of student accommodations, services provided and outcomes achieved. Utilize data to inform decision-making and program improvements.
- Manage and lead program goals by providing professional and technical expertise on disability issues (particularly in assistive technology and computer access areas) throughout the campus community (e.g. provide training for faculty and staff on adaptive computing technologies, conduct workshops and presentations on disability issues such as laws, the application of the laws at UW, website accessibility, accessibility training courses for use with learning management systems, etc.).
- Represent DSS on division and university-wide committees.
- Lead and supervise the coordinator of testing accommodations for students.
- Provide technology support, recommend software upgrades, troubleshooting and monitoring databases for changes, and convey updates to the team.
- Provide leadership and assistance with monitoring program effectiveness and identify areas for improvement. Implement strategies to enhance the quality and accessibility of disability support services.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Master's degree in Special Education, Rehabilitation Counseling, Higher Education Administration or a related field
Experience: 3 years work-related experience, preferably in higher education setting
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Prefer Certified Rehabilitation Counselor (CRC) or Certified Disability Services Provider (CDSP)
- Experience working with and advocating for diverse populations, including neurodiverse students and students with learning disabilities, and chronic medical conditions.
- Knowledge of disability laws (ADA, Section 504), trends in higher education, and familiarity with accommodations, IEPs and 504 plans.

The Assistant Director will collaborate with other professional staff and employees within the DSS to enhance the academic success and retention of students with disabilities. The Assistant Director will also represent the DSS on key campus committees.
The Assistant Director is a full-time, 12-month position and is responsible for sustaining the work of the Disability Support Services office and, in the absence of the Director, must be able to assume the leadership responsibilities of the office.
General Responsibilities:
- Supervise the delivery of essential services to students with disabilities, including reasonable accommodations to promote and support equal opportunity and access in all academic, residential, and co-curricular programs and services.
- Initiate targeted student outreach and communication to implement accommodations including but not limited to priority registration, reduced caseload, course substitutions, and accommodation letter notification.
- Review and interpret disability-related documentation for all areas of disability; conduct intake interviews and meetings with prospective families and students; determine reasonable accommodations; maintain strict confidentiality and show professional discretion in all interactions; document interactions with prospective and registered students.
- Collaborates with various offices including Campus/Student Life, Counseling Services, TRIO, Health Services, and offices, to evaluate and determine appropriate accommodations and services for students with disabilities.
- Provide direct support services which include academic coaching and training on assistive technology; monitor and track the progress of DSS students in support or retention efforts; respond to and resolve student and faculty concerns; make referrals as needed.
- Represents the DSS at key campus recruitment and retention events including but not limited to Admitted Student Days, College Open House, and New Student Orientation.
- Assists with supervising DSS testing services. Ensures office focus and attention to detail while scheduling and administering accommodated course exams and tests; adherence to DSS testing protocols, and enforcing institutional honor code policy.
- Assists the Director with managing Peer Note-taking and E-text systems.
- Under Director supervision, assists with supervision and implementation of documentation systems, data collection, service coordination, and reporting systems including student records and service planning.
- Under Director supervision, assists in developing, reviewing, evaluating, and implementing all operational procedures and guidelines to ensure compliance with applicable federal, state, and professional standards and ethics.
- Assists with creating marketing materials, including but not limited to office bulletin boards, flyers, web content, and DSS newsletter, and manages social media accounts.
- Assists with recruitment and hiring of DSS student workers. Assists with onboarding, training, supervision, and evaluation of the activities of office workers, peer educators, and peer navigators. Assists the director with Handshake recruitment postings.
- Builds, fosters, and maintains intentional relationships with the college's departments and/or offices to ensure accurate dissemination of information, and coordination of academic student services
- Serve as an advocate and resource for assigned students. Assists students in understanding and negotiating the academic rules and regulations that govern academic eligibility, progress, and successful degree completion.
- Directs purposeful discussion with students to identify academic strengths and challenges, gauge adjustment to academic and social life on campus, and provide advice regarding viable pathways that may lead to enhanced student success. Assists students in developing a success plan and monitors plan progress and outcomes.
- Collaborates with the associate academic dean and departmental academic advisors to identify students whose behaviors align with early alerts. Act as a liaison between faculty, faculty advisors, and students to address issues as they arise.
- Serve as a resource for faculty as they determine how to best implement approved accommodations including support in program or curricular modification, universal instructional design, learning strategies, adaptive/assistive technology and equipment, material in alternative media, note-taking, testing, and scribing.
- Assist with the development of reports, data analysis, and assessment of students' first-year term-by-term engagement.
- Maintains awareness of current trends and best practices regarding student outreach and/or retention; assists with developing retention strategies, and works closely with college staff in implementing, evaluating, and improving retention strategies.
- Review and analyze accommodation requests for co-curricular accommodations; speak with students requesting housing accommodations; and make recommendations to the College/Campus Life regarding housing accommodations.
- Meet with students, families, and staff to resolve issues related to housing and dining accommodations, accessibility concerns, information about specific disabilities, and the rights and responsibilities of these constituencies relative to the mandates of relevant laws.
- Provide consultation to college staff in Student Development, Dining Services, Human Resources and Facilities
- Work with and support Admissions on student outreach ensuring prospective students are informed of all accessibility services at the college.
- Master's degree in education/special education, higher education administration, college student personnel, counseling, social work, psychology, or related field.
- 3 years of work experience in vocational rehabilitation, counseling, social work, higher education, or related fields; and experience working with individuals with disabilities.
- Understanding of disability services in higher education.
- A commitment to our mission of building a diverse and inclusive community and to the success of students of diverse backgrounds.
- Doctorate in education/special education, higher education administration, college student personnel, counseling, social work, psychology, or related field.
- Demonstrated 2-3 years supervisory experience.
- 5 years of work experience in academic/educational settings or vocational rehabilitation, counseling, social work, or related field.

The Assistant Director will collaborate with other professional staff and employees within the DSS to enhance the academic success and retention of students with disabilities. The Assistant Director will also represent the DSS on key campus committees.
The Assistant Director is a full-time, 12-month position and is responsible for sustaining the work of the Disability Support Services office and, in the absence of the Director, must be able to assume the leadership responsibilities of the office.
General Responsibilities:
- Supervise the delivery of essential services to students with disabilities, including reasonable accommodations to promote and support equal opportunity and access in all academic, residential, and co-curricular programs and services.
- Initiate targeted student outreach and communication to implement accommodations including but not limited to priority registration, reduced caseload, course substitutions, and accommodation letter notification.
- Review and interpret disability-related documentation for all areas of disability; conduct intake interviews and meetings with prospective families and students; determine reasonable accommodations; maintain strict confidentiality and show professional discretion in all interactions; document interactions with prospective and registered students.
- Collaborates with various offices including Campus/Student Life, Counseling Services, TRIO, Health Services, and offices, to evaluate and determine appropriate accommodations and services for students with disabilities.
- Provide direct support services which include academic coaching and training on assistive technology; monitor and track the progress of DSS students in support or retention efforts; respond to and resolve student and faculty concerns; make referrals as needed.
- Represents the DSS at key campus recruitment and retention events including but not limited to Admitted Student Days, College Open House, and New Student Orientation.
- Assists with supervising DSS testing services. Ensures office focus and attention to detail while scheduling and administering accommodated course exams and tests; adherence to DSS testing protocols, and enforcing institutional honor code policy.
- Assists the Director with managing Peer Note-taking and E-text systems.
- Under Director supervision, assists with supervision and implementation of documentation systems, data collection, service coordination, and reporting systems including student records and service planning.
- Under Director supervision, assists in developing, reviewing, evaluating, and implementing all operational procedures and guidelines to ensure compliance with applicable federal, state, and professional standards and ethics.
- Assists with creating marketing materials, including but not limited to office bulletin boards, flyers, web content, and DSS newsletter, and manages social media accounts.
- Assists with recruitment and hiring of DSS student workers. Assists with onboarding, training, supervision, and evaluation of the activities of office workers, peer educators, and peer navigators. Assists the director with Handshake recruitment postings.
- Builds, fosters, and maintains intentional relationships with the college's departments and/or offices to ensure accurate dissemination of information, and coordination of academic student services
- Serve as an advocate and resource for assigned students. Assists students in understanding and negotiating the academic rules and regulations that govern academic eligibility, progress, and successful degree completion.
- Directs purposeful discussion with students to identify academic strengths and challenges, gauge adjustment to academic and social life on campus, and provide advice regarding viable pathways that may lead to enhanced student success. Assists students in developing a success plan and monitors plan progress and outcomes.
- Collaborates with the associate academic dean and departmental academic advisors to identify students whose behaviors align with early alerts. Act as a liaison between faculty, faculty advisors, and students to address issues as they arise.
- Serve as a resource for faculty as they determine how to best implement approved accommodations including support in program or curricular modification, universal instructional design, learning strategies, adaptive/assistive technology and equipment, material in alternative media, note-taking, testing, and scribing.
- Assist with the development of reports, data analysis, and assessment of students' first-year term-by-term engagement.
- Maintains awareness of current trends and best practices regarding student outreach and/or retention; assists with developing retention strategies, and works closely with college staff in implementing, evaluating, and improving retention strategies.
- Review and analyze accommodation requests for co-curricular accommodations; speak with students requesting housing accommodations; and make recommendations to the College/Campus Life regarding housing accommodations.
- Meet with students, families, and staff to resolve issues related to housing and dining accommodations, accessibility concerns, information about specific disabilities, and the rights and responsibilities of these constituencies relative to the mandates of relevant laws.
- Provide consultation to college staff in Student Development, Dining Services, Human Resources and Facilities
- Work with and support Admissions on student outreach ensuring prospective students are informed of all accessibility services at the college.
- Master's degree in education/special education, higher education administration, college student personnel, counseling, social work, psychology, or related field.
- 3 years of work experience in vocational rehabilitation, counseling, social work, higher education, or related fields; and experience working with individuals with disabilities.
- Understanding of disability services in higher education.

- Doctorate in education/special education, higher education administration, college student personnel, counseling, social work, psychology, or related field.
- Demonstrated 2-3 years supervisory experience.
- 5 years of work experience in academic/educational settings or vocational rehabilitation, counseling, social work, or related field.

Position Summary:
Coordinate and provide services and resources to individuals/families necessary to promote rehabilitation, recovery, and resiliency. Identify and address the strengths, which will aid the individual or family in the recovery and resiliency process, as well as the barriers that could impede the development of skills needed for independent functioning in the community. Support the individual and the family in crisis situations; provide personalized interventions to develop, facilitate, or enhance an individual’s ability to make informed and independent decisions. The patient care assignment may include children who are at risk of/or experiencing serious emotional, neurobiological, and/or behavioral disorders; adults with severe mental illness (SMI), individuals with chronic substance abuse, and/or individuals with co-occurring disorders. Ensure adherence to Hospitals and departmental policies and procedures. Patient care assignment may include neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric age groups.
Detailed responsibilities:
* PATIENT CENTERED MED - Adhere to and promote the core expectations of the Patient Centered Medical Home or Patient Centered Specialty Practice as applicable
* NAVIGATION/ PATIENT ADVOCACY - Work to eliminate barriers to access to culturally competent medical services for all patients. Assist patients to access community resources, and financial assistance programs and services that are needed
* COLLABORATION - Collaborate with medical providers, multidisciplinary team members and community resource providers to assist patient to meet above described treatment goals
* LIFE SKILLS - Facilitate and encourage the development of skills in the following areas: activities of daily living, interpersonal coping, socialization, & community functioning. Based on the needs of the individual, this function could include facilitating adaptation to the home, school, work, recreational, and social environments; pro-active self-care, nutrition, & money management

* ASSESSMENT - Work with the individual/family to identify personal strengths, needs and barriers to attaining self-identified goals; conduct ongoing assessments to determine if the services accessed are meeting or have adequately met the individual’s needs
* CRISIS INTERVENTION - Assess, support and intervene in crisis situations including the facilitation of the development and use of individual crisis management plans that recognize the early signs of crisis/relapse and use natural supports. Identify & encourage use of alternatives to hospital emergency departments and inpatient hospital services
* TRACKING - Coordinate and monitor use of services, including comprehensive tracking of client activities in relation to care plan such as attendance to all scheduled appointments, reviewing documentation of other in-house providers, and maintaining contact with external providers. Conduct post discharge follow-up contact as appropriate

Meet with clients who are in custody at MDC. Attend court hearings and other meetings with court staff and clients. Complete weekly/monthly written reports and e-mails to probation/parole officers/pre trail mental health specialists as required
