Most Chemical Engineering co-ops and interns enter into the following positions:
Process / Technical Service Engineers may work on a variety of projects in the Technical Services Department together with your mentor that put your classroom experience as a Chemical Engineer into practice. The vast majority of our Chemical Engineering interns/co-ops work in this area. The experience will expand your understanding of the refining environment and technical aspects of the refinery. Past projects/duties include: develop and lead test runs to optimize refinery operations; perform process engineering calculations concerning the various process technology (or equipment) in the refinery; monitor and make recommendations in regards to catalyst and adsorbents; complete projects and provide recommendations for improvements to the refinery process and equipment.
Operations Research Engineers may help develop planning, blending, scheduling, and process models for refinery engineers. The models are used to optimize crude oil purchasing, refinery production, blending and finished product scheduling, and optimization of refinery production. Typical college co-op assignments include: validation of production data and mass balancing, process modeling, and development of graphical interfaces of refinery process units.
Environmental Engineers work on projects that involve the compliance of the entire refinery, and you will be exposed to the majority of process units in the refinery. You will be applying the engineering principles and calculations to various environmental projects and will also give you a broad knowledge of the various environmental laws that are applicable to refineries and what it takes to maintain compliance with those laws. Past projects/duties include: perform process calculations for the Risk Management Plan, including taking physical surveys of refinery process units; work on various process engineering projects within a Wastewater Treatment Plant; participate in inspections and/or testing that is conducted by federal, state, or local officials.
Products Control / Economics Engineers may work on a wide array of projects including operations, blending, and refinery economics. You will gain an understanding of how a tank farm is operated and how gasoline and other products are prepared and shipped to customers. In addition, you will gain some exposure to the overall economics of the refinery and how operating decisions are made based upon these economics. Past projects/duties include: analyze refinery process flow data and compare to recommended optimum levels, this will help in identifying equipment failures which cause variances in capacity from the optimum levels; update information on gasoline blends and tank samples in preparation for an annual blender waiver audit; develop applications to better present process data for refinery operating decisions.
Qualifications:
+ Candidates must be majoring in Chemical Engineering
+ Strong academic performance
+ Candidates must be authorized to work in the US on a full-time indefinite basis without the need for employment visa sponsorship now or in the future.
+ Positions are available spring, summer, and fall semesters
+ Availability for multiple work terms is preferred

+ Support transportation business development efforts, strategy development, client engagement and pursuits in California.
+ Serve as key staff on pursuits: contract manager, project manager, deputy project manager, design lead, advisor, etc.
+ Assist in the process of procuring contracts with preferred contractors for transportation projects.
+ Engage with clients to develop new business leads and project pursuits.
+ Develop strategic alliances and project partners to secure new work.
+ Represent the firm in the market through involvement in client and industry events and associations.
Project/Program Management
+ Lead the delivery of roadway projects and project teams for Caltrans and other local agencies in the Southern California District as an active member of the transportation team.
+ Lead the delivery of transportation, rail and transit projects and project teams for agencies in the Northern California District as an active member of the transportation team.
+ Lead key projects as Contract Manager, Project Manager, Sr Lead or other roles as appropriate.
+ Participate in contract negotiations.
+ Guide staff and assist in project management responsibilities, including oversight of project financial performance, adherence to project management and quality control plans, and adequacy of risk management plans.
+ Provide leadership and oversight to ensure quality project deliverables, including PS&E documents, engineering reports, project memorandums, etc.
+ Proficiency with technical writing, Microsoft Office suite, discipline-specific design software (i.e., MicroStation, InRoads/OpenRoads, AutoCAD, Civil 3D), technology, spreadsheets, and tools.
+ Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
+ Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.
Who You Are
**Required Qualifications**
+ Bachelor's degree in Engineering or closely related discipline.
+ Engineer license required (California preferred).
+ Advanced proficiency with Caltrans Design Development process, Highway Design and Construction practices.
+ 12+ years of relevant post-education experience in the civil engineering and infrastructure design.
+ 10+ years of total experience in Caltrans related projects.
+ Ability to lead and grow the civil engineering business.
+ Experience as a project manager, deputy project manager, construction management or task lead on projects.
+ Ability to work independently and provides guidance and leadership to mid-level to senior level team or project members, with strict adherence to QA/QC.
+ Strong management/leadership skills.
+ Established client relationships and industry contacts.
+ Ability to effectively manage multiple tasks and projects
+ Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills and ability to work within a team environment, as well as writing proposals and project-related documents like project scopes of work and reports.
+ Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.
**Preferred Qualifications**
+ Master's of Science in Civil Engineering or related field from an accredited program.
+ Experience working with California Department of Transportation (Caltrans).
+ Local agency roadway and intersection planning and design experience.
+ Project Management Professional (PMP) certification.

As a senior leader in our Infrastructure team, you will play a pivotal role in the growth and evolution of Whatnots platform. You will oversee our Platform Engineering team, working closely with engineering, product, and operations teams to build scalable, reliable, and performant systems that will support millions of users as we continue to scale.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and mentor a team of highly skilled engineers, guiding them through complex technical challenges and helping them achieve personal and professional growth.
  • Develop and implement strategic roadmaps for platform engineering that align with company objectives, ensuring scalability and supporting developer velocity.
  • Focus on ensuring engineers can work effectively and quickly, building within and leveraging our platform services.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to influence product decisions and ensure engineering solutions meet both business and technical needs.
  • Drive best practices in software engineering, with a focus on reducing technical debt, improving code quality, and continuously evolving engineering practices to enable faster delivery.
  • Own the architecture and development of critical infrastructure initiatives, including backend services, real-time systems, and storage infrastructure.
  • Foster a culture of innovation and continuous learning, encouraging experimentation and the adoption of new technologies.
  • Monitor industry trends, ensuring that Whatnot remains at the cutting edge of platform and infrastructure technology.

In addition to embodying our cultural principles, great candidates will also have:

  • 10+ years of experience in platform engineering or infrastructure engineering leadership roles, with at least 5 years of experience managing teams.
  • Experience in building and scaling backend systems, real-time services, and storage infrastructure.

  • Proven experience in guiding teams to deliver complex, large-scale systems with an emphasis on reliability and scalability.
