Job Summary:

We are looking for a skilled and safety-conscious Forklift Operator to join our warehouse or logistics team. The ideal candidate will be responsible for operating forklifts and other warehouse equipment to load, unload, and transport materials efficiently and safely.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Operate forklifts and other industrial vehicles to move materials around the warehouse or storage yard

Role Overview:

Sub District Heavy Equipment Operators utilize various types of heavy and specialized equipment to include, but not limited to; Gradall, Backhoes, Dozers, Vactors, Sweepers, SewerJets, Loaders, Skidsteers, Ag-spreaders, Pavers, Rollers, etc. Performs maintenance and repair of light and heavy equipment and hand tools (e.g., dump truck, grader, forklift, tractor-trailer, chain saw). Highway Technicians are also responsible to perform snow and ice removal and related maintenance duties by operation of snow plow and other winter operations duties as required.

Location :

This position is located in INDOT's Vincennes District.

CDL Positions:

Candidates with a current CDL will earn an additional $1 per hour for this position. Candidates without a CDL will be given 90 days to obtain their CDL, with training provided by INDOT, and will then earn an additional $ per hour upon successfully obtaining their CDL.

Salary Statement :

This position traditionally starts at an hourly rate of 22.00 an hour but may be commensurate with education and job experience.

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this roles are as follows:
  • Comply with all Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) safety policies and procedures.
  • Operate basic highway maintenance/ traffic equipment to maintain, repair and clean highways and rights-of-way.
  • Perform winter operations duties including snow and ice removal.
  • Perform emergency response activities such as: clean-up, traffic control, bridge closures, lane closures, placement of signs, and erecting barricades.
  • Perform regular inspections and routine equipment maintenance such as: minor repairs, preventative maintenance, refueling, and pre-trip inspections.
  • Perform job documentation tasks such as entry into the Work Management System (WMS).
  • Maintain, repair and install traffic signs, route markers, pavement markings, etc.
  • Coordinate work assigned by the Supervisor ensuring that the needed materials and equipment are available.
  • Communicate and provide feedback on employee issues to the Supervisor.
  • Workday attendance at assigned worksite(s) is an essential function of this position.
These additional duties may be performed depending on the job assignment:

Asset Inspector:
  • Perform a visual and physical inspection of INDOT owned and maintained assets to evaluate maintenance needs and assign condition rating.
  • Operate inspection equipment to determine location, condition rating, and operation of small culvert assets.
Bridge Maintenance & Repair Specialist
  • Operate basic highway maintenance equipment, specialized bridge repair and inspection equipment for maintenance, repair, and inspection of bridge structures.
  • Investigate complaints related to bridges and large culverts and coordinate to ensure follow up action is taken.
Contracts Inspector:
  • Perform inspections activities and complete the related paperwork on all maintenance contracts.
Heavy Equipment Operator:
  • Operate various types of heavy and specialized equipment to include, but not limited to; Gradall, Backhoes, Dozers, Vactors, Sweepers, SewerJets, Loaders, Skidsteers, Ag-spreaders, Pavers, Rollers, etc.
  • Perform maintenance and repair of light and heavy equipment and hand tools (e.g., dump truck, grader, forklift, tractor-trailer, chain saw).
Herbicide:
  • Operate, calibrate and set application rates for all the different types of herbicide and pesticide equipment that will be used on a routine basis. Must maintain appropriate record of all application data. .
  • Serve as an independent chemical applicator and undertake landscape projects throughout the District.
Shared workforce:
  • May support construction project ensuring compliance with contracts and quality of work being performed.
  • Perform sampling procedures for different types of materials.
  • May perform and/or assist in aggregate testing and other types of testing such as Indiana Test Methods (ITM).

The Machine Operator will follow all safety and quality procedures to efficiently perform work as assigned to meet customer requirements.

Machine Operator Duties:

  • Operate various equipment including Haven tube cutting machine, bundle saw, punch press and Innovo notch machine. Must be able to assure material is cut to length, punched or notched according to customer specifications.
  • Perform quality inspections of all material upon arrival and during the handling process.
  • Utilize tape measure, digital length gauge and computer system to ensure parts are produced to customer specification.
  • Ensure your safety and that of your co-workers by following all safety procedures and wearing all required PPE while working with associated equipment and material.

Requirements:

  • Experience in Haven tube cutting required.
  • Experience with punch press, Innovo notch, forklift driving, shipping and receiving and overhead cranes is helpful.
  • Must be able to work 8 to10 hour shifts, 4 to 6 days per week depending on demand
  • Ability to stand, bend, climb, squat and kneel continuously.
  • Must be able to lift up to 20 lbs. frequently.
  • Must be able to wear all required PPE at all times while performing.

Preferred Experience, Education and Competencies:

  • Prior manufacturing/fabrication experience is preferred
  • Prior forklift and crane experience and/or certification is preferred

A Machine Operator will process individual copper strands to a completed multiple strand construction. This function includes following the manufacturing process per the work order, the use of a forklift and overhead crane to stage material, following established machine set-up documents, processing the copper in accordance with established process parameters, conducting required quality activities, completing required documentation, labeling and staging of conforming product.

Essential Job Functions

  • Read and understand material specifications.
  • Use an overhead crane and forklift to move and stage material.
  • Read and understand process documentation for set-up and operation of processing equipment.
  • Read and understand process documentation to identify product requirements.
  • Complete and document all quality testing required both in-process and for final product.
  • Must react immediately if product does not meet requirements.
  • Complete all weight verifications.
  • Complete all required paperwork.
  • Use a computer to document production results.
  • Use a computer to generate product labels then place labels on finished product.
  • Maintain machine, associated equipment and work area in a safe, clean manner.

Skills and Abilities

  • Assist in cross-functional activities as required – helping/assisting other work centers.
  • Forklift driving experience desired; training will be provided.
  • Proper use of over-head cranes desired; training will be provided.
  • Copper weld experience desired; training will be provided.
  • May be requested to perform over-time activities.
  • Assist in engineering activities related to the operation.
  • Understanding of the ISO requirements related to the Production process.

Qualifications

  • Completion of high school, GED or equivalent.
  • Previous experience in a manufacturing environment – past wire experience preferred.
  • Able to read and understand product and processing specifications, as well quality requirements.
  • Computer experience desired; job specific computer training will be provided.
  • Must comply with all company rules and policies.

Work Environment

While performing the essential functions of this job, the employee operates within a plant environment. The employee is exposed to loud continuous noise from surrounding operating machinery.

Physical Demands

This is an active role as the employee will work in a manufacturing environment. While performing the essential functions of the job the employee will be required to stand, balance or walk on a consistent basis and may on a frequent basis be required to twist, turn, stoop, squat, kneel, bend or reach. The employee must use safe lifting techniques when lifting objects up to 50 pounds and carry out repetitive hand/wrist movements to include forearm rotation. Specific vision abilities required job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. The employee is frequently required to listen and speak and use his/her hands to operate equipment.
