Job Description

STV is seeking a Geotechnical Engineering Specialist II for our Geotechnical department at our New York City, Boston, or Lawrenceville, NY office.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist in geotechnical investigations, including field and laboratory testing, soil classification, and data analysis.

  • Support the design and analysis of foundations, retaining structures, and slope stability assessments.

  • Prepare technical reports, calculations, and drawings in accordance with industry standards.

  • Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams to integrate geotechnical findings into project designs.

  • Conduct site visits to assess geotechnical conditions and oversee construction activities related to foundation and earthwork.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, or a related field.

  • 2-5 years of experience in geotechnical engineering, including site investigations and foundation design.

  • Proficiency in geotechnical analysis software such as PLAXIS, LPILE, or similar tools.

  • Strong technical writing and communication skills.

  • EIT certification preferred, with a willingness to pursue PE licensure.

Compensation Range:

$71,024.64 - $94,699.51

+ Prepare data and visualizations such as tables, charts, reports, sketches, calculations, cross-sections, and other illustrations for the interpretation or presentation of more complex data, findings, or analyses.
+ Remain current in latest geotechnical engineering techniques and practices.

**Required Qualifications**
+ Bachelor's degree Civil Engineering with a concentration in Geotechnical or Tunneling Engineering, or a closely-related field
+ 7 to 10 years of relevant experience
+ Engineer license required.
+ Extensive knowledge of geotechnical engineering and working knowledge of related disciplines (Structures, Civil, and/or Environmental)
+ Strong verbal and written communication skills

Our Jersey City, NJ office is seeking a Geotechnical Engineering Group Leader to help expand our growing Geotechnical and Water practices in the New York metropolitan area and Northeast region. In this role, you will provide leadership, management, and technical support for a variety of multidisciplinary projects that involve dams and reservoirs, flood resiliency, heavy-civil works, and other general infrastructure across the Northeast region, nationally, and internationally. Position Responsibilities:

Candidate will serve as a Geotechnical Engineering Group Leader. Major focus areas for the role include:

+ Assist with engineering review of permit applications, engineering design plans and specifications, standby plans and engineering contracts, and periodic construction inspections, to ensure that they comply with applicable state and/or federal regulations and sound engineering practice and standards.
+ Meet with various public or private entities or individuals to discuss issues relating to a variety of engineering/construction challenges and programs.
+ Prepare documents and review those prepared by junior staff, including engineering drawings, specifications, work plans, calculations, and cost estimates. Ensure technical reports and presentations explain research, findings, and recommendations to prevent, control, restore, or address design, and/or construction issues or opportunities.
+ Develop construction plans, specifications, and cost estimates; preparing construction safety and phasing plans that require coordination with owners, other disciplines, sub-consultants, and clients.
+ Prepare data and visualizations such as tables, charts, accurate reports, sketches, calculations, and illustrations for the interpretation or presentation of data, findings, or analyses.
+ Interact with colleagues, regulatory agencies, subcontractors, clients, drillers, and laboratory staff, in a confident and professional manner.
+ Have, or demonstrably can develop, a client base for providing high level geotechnical/geological engineering services including identifying additional business development opportunities.
+ Provide technical direction, oversight, mentoring, and training to junior-level staff in all aspects of project delivery to support their growth and professional development.
+ Remain current in latest geotechnical/geological engineering techniques and practices.
+ Support national and regional client programs for the various sectors through active participation with appropriate national and global technical teams.
+ Contribute to the development and execution of business plans related to the growth of our sector services; provide market and industry insight and facilitate development of marketing strategies.
+ Participate in identification of regional technical needs and recruiting for these skills in collaboration with other senior colleagues.
+ Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP's Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
+ Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
**Who You Are**
Required Qualifications:
+ Bachelor's degree in civil engineering or geological engineering with a focus on geotechnical or geological practice.
+ 10+ years of relevant post education experience in geotechnical/geological engineering and design.
+ Engineer Licensure in one or more New England states or ability to receive comity (multi-state preferred).
+ Knowledge of engineering and geologic research techniques and protocols.
+ Ability to coordinate with clients, colleagues, and third-party groups and understand requirements.
+ Analytical mindset, detail oriented, and experience with geological research techniques required.
+ Possess computer skills and have experience with computer software including Microsoft Office and geotechnical specialty software.
+ Possess competent interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to a professional and non-professional audience.
+ Proficient self-leadership with attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.
+ Ability to lead a team to meet business objectives under general supervision.
+ Proficiency with technical writing, office automation and communication software, technology, and tools.
+ Ability to abide by WSP's health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
+ Ability to be comfortable in remote settings and a willingness to perform a variety of tasks as needed to complete an assignment. Occasional travel will be required depending on project-specific requirements.
+ Must successfully complete and pass WSP's Motor Vehicle screening.
Preferred Qualifications:
+ Master's degree in geotechnical or geological engineering.
+ Experience with rock mechanics and design and inspection of rock slope stabilization
+ Experience with geomorphology and surface processes.
+ Project management skills with experience leading teams on complex or multi-project programs.
+ Client focus with experience in client management and effective project/program delivery skills.
+ Possess strong verbal communication, writing, analytical, and organizational skills combined with a positive attitude and an ability to work both independently and within groups, including with technical peers across the company, client contacts, and subcontractors.
+ Command of geotechnical engineering practices and principles.

This opportunity entails leading a geotechnical engineering department in designing, developing, and delivering project tasks while managing scope, budget, and quality control. You will Provide QA/QC leadership, guidance, and technical oversight of geotechnical services. This position coordinates project priorities, staffing schedules, and staff assignments to ensure clients receive the proper resources appropriately. Responsible for technical coaching, mentoring, and efficient, productive staff utilization in delivering high-quality service.
You will Champion and develop sustainable and profitable growth of geotechnical services related to design, construction, and geotechnical sub-consultant oversight in the Great Lakes Division. This role also champions interoffice collaboration with the firmwide geotechnical engineering community
**What You'll Do:**
+ Develops, monitors and manages the department's operating budget in support of the group or office operating budget and forecast updates.
+ Responsible for the management, growth and professional development of discipline-specific engineering department. Coordinates department activities establishes priorities and assign staff to projects. Ensures staff development, mentoring and training needs are being met. Collaborates with other departments or groups within the office on work-sharing needs and opportunities.
+ Supports the implementation of the firm's strategic plan and HNTB's Sophisticated Sales Approach (SSA) process on project pursuits in the department and office, including development of department-level strategic planning strategies.
+ Supports the implementation of the firm's contracting (SCA) process through project delivery and contracting activities including scope, work plan and fee reviews for all contracting activities impacting the department.
+ Supports the implementation of the firm's project delivery (SDA) process including Work Planning, Monthly Project Reviews and other project performance methods to ensure quality work, on time, on schedule, to the client's satisfaction.
+ Assists in marketing responsibilities, including client discovery, proposal generation, interviews, and win-to-work activities
+ Maintains client contacts to ensure client satisfaction. Leads and assists in sales and marketing efforts for department's growth.
+ Recruits, hires, develops and retains department staff, including development of plan for staff reporting, performance and compensation reviews, and succession.
+ Manages assigned project management activities (project scope, schedule, budget and quality management) and performs technical discipline tasks including research, reports, design, specifications and plan preparation.
+ Performs other duties as assigned.
**What You'll Need:**
+ Bachelor's degree in Engineering with 10 years of practical experience including 2 years of supervisory experience.
**What We Prefer:**
+ Master's degree in Engineering specializing in geotechnical engineering
+ Professional Engineer (PE) certification
+ Twelve years of geotechnical engineering experience
+ Two years of supervisory experience of geotechnical engineering staff.
