Job Description

The role of a skilled healthcare professional, registered nurse, involves the provision of high-quality patient care in clinical settings. In this capacity, one practices independently and demonstrates an awareness of all relevant aspects of a situation.

Responsibilities include:

Nursing Care

Utilizing the nursing process, including assessment, diagnosis, planning, intervention, and evaluation for assigned patients, as outlined by the ANA Scope and Standards of Practice.

Patient Support

Addressing increasingly complex psychological, emotional, cultural, and social needs of patients and families, in accordance with their level of practice.

Meds Administration

Administering medications and treatments, monitoring side-effects, and effectiveness of prescribed treatment.

Documentation

Documenting patient history, symptoms, medication, and care given.

Education and Training

Assessing learning needs and providing education to patients, family members, and caregivers; identifying issues and resources.

Requirements

Education/Skills

A Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing is preferred.

Experience

One year of experience in a related nursing specialty is preferred.

Licenses, Registrations, or Certifications

BLS certification is required, with RN licensure in the state of employment or compact also being necessary.

Position Requirements

Education/Skills

Newly hired experienced nurses must attend New Nurses Orientation within the first 30 days of hire.

Initial on-boarding requirements are validated through successful completion of designated organizational entry competency validation and an Emergency Department-specific competency validation.

All newly licensed nurses may participate in a residency program or other specific orientation.

Experience

One year of experience in a related nursing specialty is preferred.

Licenses, Registrations, or Certifications

Current ACLS certification is required, along with current PALS certification and current TNCC certification.

Credential grace periods apply, depending on experience level.

Work Schedule

The work schedule is from 7PM to 7AM.

Work Type

This is a per diem position, as needed.

The Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) is an advanced practice nurse who functions in the role of expert clinician, educator, leader, consultant and researcher. In collaboration with the healthcare team, the CNS monitors the clinical care of patients and provides clinical support to improve patient care and outcomes. With in-depth knowledge and skills, advanced judgment and clinical experience in a nursing specialty, the CNS sphere of influence includes the care of the patient/family, practice of nursing and providing solutions for complex systems and processes. The CNS serves as a role model, patient advocate, charge agent, and leader to enhance patient care. This position practices within the scope of the California Nursing Practice Act and in accordance with Valley Children's policies.

About Us:
The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Valley Children's Hospital is Central California's only Regional Level IV NICU - the highest level of medical care available for premature and critically ill newborns. With a focus on family-centered care, our patients have access to a full range of pediatric and surgical specialists that treat potentially life-threatening illnesses due to extreme prematurity, congenital defects, injury, chronic illnesses and more. Our NICU patient ratios are 1:1 or 2:1 in the ICU and 1:3 in Intermediate Care. Collectively, our NICUs provide specialized care for more than 1,400 fragile babies and nearly 25,000 patient days a year. Our team supports a network of NICUs throughout Central California, providing services for Madera County, Merced County, Fresno County, Kings County and Tulare County. Our level II and level III satellite NICUs (Fresno, Merced & Hanford) are staffed with Valley Children's team of experts to provide patients the opportunity to receive treatment closer to home. The nurses in these satellite units are trained to attend high-risk deliveries and resuscitate babies in the delivery room if needed. Our NICU is ranked as one of the best children's hospitals in Neonatology by U.S. News & World Report for 2023-2024- the seventh such ranking for our NICU. Our expert team consists of more than 250 neonatal nurses, constantly striving to innovate and improve patient care so babies have the best outcomes.

Valley Children's Healthcare - one of the largest pediatric healthcare networks in the nation - provides Central California's only high-quality, comprehensive care exclusively for children, from before birth to young adulthood. With more than 670 physicians and 3,500 staff, Valley Children's delivers high-quality, comprehensive care to more than 1.3 million children in our service area. Our network offers highly specialized medical and surgical services to care for children with conditions ranging from common to the highly complex at our 358-bed stand-alone children's hospital that includes 28 regional NICU beds. EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum 3 years full time or equivalent clinical experience with at least one year equivalent experience working in a regional or community NICU
  • Minimum 5 years increasingly responsible experience which demonstrates proficiency in the skills and knowledge required to perform the job
  • Extensive advanced knowledge of nursing principles, practiced and systems
EDUCATION/LICENSES/CERTIFICATIFICATIONS:
  • Master's degree in nursing with emphasis in Clinical Nurse Specialty
  • Active California Registered Nurse (RN) license
  • Active Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) license
  • Neonatal Intensive Care Nurse (NCC) or Critical Care Registered Nurse (CCRN) in Neonatal required
  • HeartCode Basic Life Support (BLS) within 30 days of hire or transfer into position
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) within 6 months of hire or transfer into position
