JOB SUMMARY:
Instructors of the Upward Bound Program at Fort Valley State University provide direct academic support services to the students of the Upward Bound Project in an area of expertise (Laboratory Science) both online and in-person. Summary:
This position will assist the Science Lab Coordinator and Science faculty in organizing, stocking, and inventorying supplies and equipment in the Science Labs and assisting in various lab administration duties. The science lab technician will be responsible for helping to maintain inventory of chemicals, and specialized equipment. These responsibilities are performed in an ethical manner consistent with the University's mission, vision, and values which include diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Responsibilities:
- Create/Maintain Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for continuous and smooth lab operations
- Keep an up-to-date log/record for orders relating to any of the science courses.
- Ensure that experiments are set up on time and according to SOPs.
- Coordinate the use of laboratory equipment shared amongst labs as needed.
- Aid in faculty lab instruction by helping students to execute labs, and ensure equipment is used properly, safely, and in accordance to the instructions of the manufacturer as needed.
- Keep labs in an orderly fashion as indicated by the Lab Coordinator and standards.
- Aid in Lab compliance with OSHA/MIOSHA by minimizing the risk of incidents and including but not limited to, spills, exposures, and the maintaining of SDS files as directed by the lab coordinator.
- Assist in the handling of biohazardous materials and their disposal.
- Assist with lab inventory of models and equipment as assigned.
- Creates, maintains, and updates files and record-keeping systems.
- Generate reports, memorandums, correspondence, presentation materials, spreadsheets and graphics, and other materials using various software programs as assigned.
- Handling of documents and maintaining a high level of confidentiality.
- Conducts special projects, research, and assignments as needed.
- Aid in the training of student lab assistants.
- Demonstrate and promote the University's Cultural Values.
- Understand and abide by all external and internal regulations and policies. This includes NCAA, GLIAC, and national affiliations associated with athletics or other role-specific regulations.

- A bachelor's Degree in biochemistry, chemistry, or a closely related field of study is required. Master's degree in Biochemistry, Chemistry, or a closely related field preferred.
- At least 1 year of experience in a college lab or work setting is required. Two years of college lab experience preferably in a chemistry setting is preferred.
- Experience with normal laboratory equipment but also chemistry specialized equipment such as HNMR and FTIR. Experience or the capacity to complete minor repairs of instruments is a plus!
- Training or certification in OSHA/MIOSHA regulations and in the use, handling, storage, and disposal of chemicals that maybe hazardous. This can be acquired within 6 months of hire.
- Able to read and understand how labs are to be set up.
- Demonstrated capacity to analyze lab experiments, create processes or SOPs, and execute experiments with consistent results.
- Capacity to deal with and follow through on responsibilities promptly.
- Demonstrated ability to work accurately and effectively with computerized data systems (PC and mainframe).
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with people of diverse backgrounds and promote a positive working environment, spirit of cooperation, and positive reactions to change and conflict resolution.

Position Summary
Under general supervision of the assigned manager/supervisor, performs specialized and technical duties in the operation and maintenance of science instructional laboratories and stockrooms including hazardous material storage, clean up, and disposal. Prepares, receives, stocks, and issues laboratory supplies, materials, and equipment; coordinates budgetary requisitions and expenditures for laboratory supplies and equipment, repairs, alterations, preventative maintenance contracts, and blanket purchase orders; and trains and directs student help.

Typical Duties
Generates purchase orders for supplies, materials, and equipment needed for laboratories; and prepares instructional materials and equipment for instructor demonstrations and student use. Organizes and facilitates the collection, clean up, and disposal of biohazardous or toxic chemical waste; interfaces with hazardous waste disposal vendors; adheres to state and local laws and regulations relating to health and safety, and safe storage and disposal of hazardous materials; and maintains the stockroom and laboratory in a safe, clean, and orderly condition, which includes functional checks on safety equipment such as eyewash stations, showers, fire extinguishers and hoods. Assures availability of supplies, materials, and equipment needed for laboratories; and provides training for instructors and new technicians in stockroom operation. Prepares and issues materials and equipment for student use; and cleans, sterilizes, performs minor repairs to, adjusts, and maintains laboratory and stockroom equipment. Trains and provides direction to student help as assigned; operates a variety of equipment related to the science lab and stockroom; orders, receives, and stores supplies, materials, and equipment; communicates results of tests and analyses; and prepares and maintains various records and reports related to laboratory operations, including records of storeroom expenditures and consumable materials use. Operates a computer for word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications; and maintains supply, materials, and equipment inventories and related accountability records in a scientific storeroom. Controls expenditures within the assigned budget allocation; and provides data for and prepares budget estimates. Operates a motor vehicle as needed; meets with science faculty, Instructional Assistants, and other Laboratory Technicians to assist in the design and development of experiments and demonstrations; and performs related duties as required.
Biology:
Prepares and maintains microbial cultures and media; prepares solutions; handles living organisms; works with preserved organisms; moves and relocates biological models; operates autoclaves; cleans lab and stockroom glassware and equipment; and uses dissecting tools.
Chemistry:
Prepares materials for instructors including solutions, solids, unknowns, and associated demonstration materials; prepares standard volumetric solutions and reagents used in labs; tests and analyzes chemical and physical properties of liquids, solids, and gasses; maintains a chemical library for students to check out various items needed for their labs or homework; assigns lockers each semester to the various labs; performs minor maintenance and keeps inventory on lockers and usage; maintains breakage cards for instructors in order to monitor glassware breakage and shortages.
Physics:
Prepares equipment and materials for instructors; assembles items for demonstration and lab use; repairs equipment using basic electronics skill; calculates data to compare with expected values; maintains sensors and probes; and may work with nuclear materials.
Minimum Qualifications
EXPERIENCE: One year of responsible and successful work experience in a science laboratory or stockroom, or equivalent training.
EDUCATION: Completion of two years of college education, with 19 semester units in Biology, Chemistry, and/or Physics. NOTE: Additional experience or education may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required experience or education.
