About the Role
As a Nurse Practitioner at WSH, you will serve as a primary care provider for patients within our inpatient psychiatric hospital. Schedule: Regular, 9 mo., PT, 4-8 hrs/wk.
JOB SUMMARY:
The Health Services Nurse Practitioner services as a part of the patient care team directly provide medical services within the scope of their current licensure. Health Services Nurse Practitioner will provide medical treatment and care to include the following responsibilities: evidenced based and culturally competent patient care for students and staff/faculty, evaluation and management of patients with acute/ chronic medical issues, treatment plan development, prescribing medications as necessary and within state licensure and scope of practice, complete orders for diagnostic testing and medical devices, and appropriate referrals for additional treatments as needed such as physical therapy and specialized care.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provide direct patient care, assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up for common acute and chronic illnesses.
- Prescribe medications and appropriate evidenced based treatments in accordance with state licensure and scope of practice.
- Provide women's health services including contraceptive counseling, STI testing/treatment, and routine gynecologic exams.
- Manage minor injuries and urgent care needs within the scope of campus health.
- Offer health education to students regarding lifestyle, wellness, and disease prevention.
- Coordinate care with campus mental health providers, athletic trainers, disability services, and other support services.
- Refer students to external providers or specialists as needed and facilitate continuity of care.
- Participate in interdisciplinary team meetings and contribute to integrated care planning.
- Document all patient encounters in the electronic health record (EHR) in a timely and accurate manner.
- Maintain compliance with HIPAA, FERPA, OSHA, and other applicable laws and guidelines.
- Assist in the development and review of clinic policies, procedures, and quality improvement initiatives.
- Assist with front desk relief when needed.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Current certification for CPR and AED for the health care professional
- Current license in the state of Virginia
- Computer experience (Electronic Health Records, word processing, Excel, etc.)
- Experience with HIPAA & OSHA regulations

- Excellent communication, clinical reasoning, and organizational skills.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Master's or Doctoral degree in Nursing from an accredited program. Current Nurse Practitioner certification and licensure in the state of Virginia. Minimum of 2 years of NP experience preferred, ideally in college health, family medicine, women's health, or urgent care.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to sit and use hands and fingers, to handle, or feel. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, and climb or balance. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision. The employee must occasionally travel to meetings and conferences off campus, which may include some overnight travel. Willingness to risk exposure to persons who are sick and possibly contagious while practicing standardized health, hygiene and safety precautions.
