Position Overview GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF POSITION : The Research Director reviews legislation, academic literature, and policy developments, producing reports, analysis, and expert testimony. The role involves identifying research lines that support advocacy goals. Responsibilities Provide technical assistance to partners including public agencies and civil society organizations. Write reports and analyses on developments in access to medicines policy and pharmaceutical practices, ensuring clarity, accuracy, and logical argumentation. File FOI requests, submit comments to agencies, or testify before legislatures as needed. Develop strategic research agendas in priority areas related to pharmaceutical law and policy in collaboration with the group Director. Analyze and suggest improvements to legislation; draft proposed legislation. Supervise complex research projects involving staff, fellows, interns, and allies. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

The primary focus of the Research Analyst is supporting the practice in preparing for business development meetings and delivering on executive search projects. Typical job focus includes:

JOB DESCRIPTION OVERVIEW:
Research Economist/ Senior Research Economist conducts original research and analysis on issues related to labor and workforce, pay equity, health, and/or education. They are responsible for leading work in one or more of IWPR’s core research areas, sharing research findings at events and conferences, fundraising and managing philanthropic partnerships, and building networks and organizational partnerships in the field.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Research Strategy, Vision, and Leadership (Senior Research Economist Only)

  • Develop and manage a portfolio of research and work focused on a segment of IWPR’s four core pillars: Equitable Work and Wages, Caregiving and Families, Education and Career Advancement, and Reproductive Justice and Health Equity.
  • Identify and assess emerging research gaps in the field and potential innovations and opportunities for IWPR.
  • Work in partnership with SVP of Research to develop a strategic vision for the research pillar area(s).
  • Coordinate with the Policy Team, Communications Team, and Advancement Team to develop research products based on maximizing impact and align with organizational strategy.
  • Contribute to fundraising efforts through providing input into letters of intent and grant proposals in partnership with the Advancement Team as needed.
  • Represent IWPR at meetings, coalitions, and events.
  • Supervise the work of research staff and external consultants providing support on studies.
Research and Policy Work
  • Provide thought leadership and conduct original research and policy analysis on issues related to IWPR’s core research and policy pillars: Equitable Work and Wages, Caregiving and Families, Education and Career Advancement, and Reproductive Justice and Health Equity.
  • Design and lead the analysis of technical quantitative studies.
  • Perform quantitative data analysis, including developing models; creating data visuals; developing, programming, and fielding online surveys.
  • Write high quality briefing papers, reports, presentations, and journal articles.
  • Develop and maintain a working knowledge of policy proposals and research in multiple domains.
  • Provide organization-wide support on research design and data sources available for studying dimensions and trends of core issue areas.
  • Elicit feedback from Policy, Communications, and Advancement staff on scope of research publications to maximize impact.
  • Consult with researchers on methodological questions arising from data analysis needs and assist with designing new studies and considering data availability and analysis plans for quantitative studies including identifying data sources, confirming study design feasibility, and contributing to proposal development.
  • Apply racial equity and intersectional frameworks and analysis in research study designs, written reports, and briefs.
  • Represent IWPR’s research to outside groups, funders, media outlets, other stakeholders, and to the research community.
Program Design and Management
  • Track project budgets and timelines to ensure that work is completed on time and within resource parameters.
  • Work with SVP of Research to fundraise and manage donor relationships, including writing grant proposals and reports.
  • Work with Policy and Communications staff to coordinate policy campaigns and dissemination efforts on key issues and priorities.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Senior Research Economist – A Ph.D. or equivalent experience/expertise in the field of Economics with ten years of experience.

  • Experience with multivariate statistical methods, survey research and/or qualitative research and design and analysis.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills, including presentation skills.
  • Superior problem-solving, managerial, and interpersonal skills.

SALARY
This is an on-site, full-time exempt position. The salary for the Senior Research Economist is $125,172-$48,770.00/year and for the Research Economist is 94,187- 115,117. OVERVIEW

The Assistant Director of Research is a leadership role within the Academy's Public Policy Research program, which supports the Academy's public policy mission and goals. The Assistant Director assists the Director in developing and managing the public policy research program. Working closely with the Research Committee, the Assistant Director is responsible for: supporting the development of, following established approval protocols, and completing assigned research projects; assessing research priorities across practice areas; and the annual Academy Award for Research program. The Assistant Director serves as a primary point of contact with external research partners and is a trusted resource in monitoring and remaining aware of other external research work within the Academy's areas of interest to be used to support our public policy agenda. Internally, the Assistant Director works with the Academy's Senior Fellows, staff, and volunteers in the evaluation and communication of research results, as well as provides technical assistance in all areas of public policy research. The Assistant Director supervises the Senior Research Analyst.

The Assistant Director, in collaboration with the Director, shapes the Academy's policy research initiatives, executes research and analysis work, and evaluates proposals and commissioned work for quality and objectivity. Working with a direct report and in partnership with the Director and Public Policy leadership team, this role has a strong emphasis on cross-department and cross-organizational collaboration and external engagement. Internally, the Assistant Director is responsible for effectively managing and empowering staff to advance the Academy's strategy and research agenda. The Assistant Director will assist the Director and department leadership to build strong team spirit, create professional growth opportunities, and foster a work environment that reinforces our core values and encourages independent judgement and a self-starter mentality.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

Research Program Management

  • Contribute to the development of a targeted research agenda, in consultation with the Research Committee, Academy volunteer leadership, and staff leadership.
  • With Director, develop and monitor the research budget.
  • Provide project management to all research projects, coordinated with other department staff.
  • Maintain and adhere to research project selection criteria, protocols for conduct of research, and other related Academy guidelines, and agreements.
  • Assist in selection and management of external resources, such as consultants or academic collaborators, and identify external sources of data to acquire. Work with Academy staff to execute contracts for research work.
  • Supervise and provide direction to the Senior Research Analyst in their assigned project work and professional development.
  • Ensure collaborative and engaged communication with Academy staff, to include the rest of the Public Policy department, as well as the Academy's volunteers and broader membership.
Produce High Quality Research
  • Produce objective, scientific analyses to guide policymakers and public policy stakeholders on actuarial perspectives on public policy issues, which may be published in several forms, to include peer-reviewed journals or on the Academy website, and may take the form of research reports, memos, policy briefs, formal and information presentations, webinars, talking points, or press releases.
  • Establish and meet reasonable timelines for the completion of research projects through comprehensive project proposals, with an awareness for the timely production of materials to be used in support of the Academy's public policy agenda.
  • Produce data driven or qualitative research, reports, and publications that reflect the current and anticipated public policy landscape across practice areas, with a focus on actuarial perspectives on state, federal, and international issues that relate to insurance and financial services.
External Engagement
  • Build and maintain awareness of the Academy's Public Policy Research by developing and maintaining relationships with staff at other actuarial organizations, at non-actuarial organizations regularly doing related research, and relevant policymaking organizations.
  • Create opportunities for the presentation of Academy research at actuarial, non-actuarial, and policymaking venues.
  • Participate in research networks that are relevant to the Academy's policy areas.
  • Assist Academy staff with outreach to policymakers, the actuarial profession, and external stakeholders.
Travel: 10%, primarily domestic and in support of external presentations/conferences. Weekends/overnight attendance may be required

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • Strong interpersonal communications, leadership ability, and organizational skills.
  • Excellent writing and editing skills.
  • Training in and experience with the collection and analysis of both qualitative and quantitative methods required with skills in the use of SAS and/or other statistical software, such as STATA and R.
  • Ability to prioritize, lead, coordinate, and actively work on multiple simultaneous projects while adhering to clear deadlines.
  • Ability to create and manage a multi-year budget.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • PhD required, with a multidisciplinary background (anthropology, actuarial science, economics, political science, psychology, public policy, sociology, and related or similar disciplines).

  • Minimum of three (3) years of previous supervisory experience required.
Preferred Experience :
  • Prior experience in member associations or trade organizations.
  • Experience carrying out applied statistical analysis.
  • Experience with policy issues in the financial services sector.
  • Experience stakeholder engagement, particularly at the legislative and regulatory levels.
  • Project management experience and experience with Asana is a plus.
