About the opportunity

SWCA Environmental Consultants is expanding our team and looking for a temporary Biological Field Technicians (HR Title = Natural Resources Technician) with backgrounds in botany, ecology, environmental science, and/or wildlife biology to work from our Albuquerque or Carlsbad, New Mexico, offices.These positions would work on a variety of projects and field efforts throughout the Southwest and Intermountain West. This is a temporary, hourly position eligible for overtime.

What you will accomplish

  • Follow established scientific protocols to conduct wildlife, vegetation, and wetland field surveys, complete environmental inspections, wildlife and vegetation baseline studies, and reclamation monitoring.

  • Use topographic maps, aerial photographs, GPS units, and other maps and tools to determine exact locations of project areas, habitat types, species of interest, and associated landforms.
  • Photograph and record appropriate habitat, species, and landforms.
  • Operate SWCA vehicles, assure they will perform safely, and notify appropriate personnel if vehicles need maintenance.
  • Perform all work with a focus on safety in a remote and rugged field setting.
  • Ability to travel 100% of the time for up to 8-days in a row.
  • Ability to carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 40 pounds.
  • Adhere to the safety program and look out for the safety of others, promptly communicating and mitigating safety hazards.
Experience and qualifications for success
  • Minimum of B.A. or B.S. in Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science, or Natural Resource Management or similar field preferred.
  • Experience with field-based scientific data collection and attention to detail.
  • Must have experience with accurate data collection procedures and data entry QA/QC.
  • Ability to identify flora and fauna to species using dichotomous keys, field guides, and other applications.
  • Familiarity with New Mexico flora and fauna and wetland experience a plus.
  • Ability to work long days in the field for extended periods of time in a safe and productive manner.
  • Ability to maintain a positive attitude in a dynamic work environment.
  • Ability to travel and work remotely as required.
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a team with excellent team collaboration skills.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office Word and Excel.

    Perform geospatial data management and spatial analysis, supporting our work in environmental, water resources, infrastructure, and stormwater projects.
  • Craft or edit high-quality, communicative print and web-based maps and graphics that tell cohesive stories and clearly illustrate project information and solutions to clients, project teams, and regulators.
  • Develop, support, and maintain mobile field data collection resources and processes, primarily using ArcGIS Online and Esri Field Maps.
  • Assist with data acquisition, editing, cleaning, feature digitization, and analysis/data documentation for project teams.

Position Summary:

Assists in protecting the Cowlitz Indian Tribe's natural resources by maintaining and improving the lands. Provides technical support to the Natural Resources programs for land management of tribal lands. Honors and represents the mission, vision, values of CIT and of the Natural Resources program.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Performs tree hazard abatement, mowing and clearing lands of trees and brush; noxious weed and invasive species control according to established policies and procedures and safety protocols.
  • Assists in habitat restoration projects; plants, prunes, and trims trees and shrubs to provide better habitat.
  • Constructs, maintains and/or repairs building and other structures, roadways, pathways, and fences using a variety of power tools and light equipment.
  • Operates, cleans, greases, oils, services, and makes minor repairs to tools and equipment; makes emergency adjustment.
  • Picks up fish from hatcheries and delivers for processing.
  • Distributes fresh fish to tribal members according to safe food handling practices.
  • Receives shipments; cleans and packages vacuum sealed fish filets for shipment to tribal members.
  • Ensures safe and sanitary conditions at all work sites; removes garbage and debris.
  • Participates in the Eulachon Spawning Stock Biomass Study by collecting, monitoring and reporting samples and data; conducts annual evaluation of vegetation on tribal properties.
  • Gathers or assists in gathering detailed resource inventory information on plant communities and marine resources.
  • Maintains wildlife habitats through effective conservation practices.
  • Assists in the coordination of community natural resources, education and cultural awareness projects and events.
  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge by conducting research, attending seminars, educational workshops, classes and conferences; reviewing professional publications; establishing networks; participating in professional societies; conferring with representatives of contracting agencies and related organizations.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of traditional form of government and tribal customs and traditions.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal, state, tribal laws, regulations and requirements.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A combination of relevant education and related work experience may be considered.
  • Obtain and maintain a Pesticide User License.
  • Obtain and maintain a Washington State Boater Education Card and Washington State Scientific Collection Permit.
  • Valid driver's license is required.
  • Fluency in the Cowlitz language preferred
  • Must be able to successfully pass a background screening / investigation according to the established requirements below.
Tribal preference in accordance with Cowlitz Indian Tribe Code and CIT Employee Policies and Procedures Handbook shall apply to all positions. All positions are required to adhere to CIT's established safety policies regarding vaccine requirements and personal protective equipment (PPE).

Responsibilities

  • Work with marketing and sales teams to develop new business
  • Manage complex projects and programs
  • Support customers with developing meaningful strategies that have long-term business
  • Support novel approaches to implementing Esri's software in support of our customers across multiple industries as the capabilities of the software evolves

Requirements

  • 8+ years of experience supporting the design, implementation, and administration of enterprise geospatial technology (ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Enterprise, and/or ArcGIS Platform)
  • Ability to clearly communicate technical ideas to technical peers, project managers, and customers
  • Demonstrated ability to translate a customer's business goals, objectives, and strategies into technical solutions
  • Professional experience winning new work in collaboration with sales and business development teams including proposal management experience preparing executive summaries, solution definition, scope of work, staffing, and pricing

REQUIREMENTS: Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or Environmental Engineering with coursework in hydrology and hydraulicsPLUSfive (5) years of professional experience in engineering related to Environmental Science, Stormwater, or a closely related field, including two (2) years of post-registration experience;ORBachelor's degree in Civil Engineer or Environmental Engineering with coursework in hydrology and hydraulicsPLUSfour (4) years of experience as a Brevard County Engineer in a section related to Environmental Science, Stormwater, or a closely related field, including one (1) year of post-registration experience. The following experience and/or familiarity is required: Floodplain and compensatory storage calculations; Interconnected Channel & Pond Routing (ICPR) modeling and review; stormwater nutrient loading calculations for stormwater projects; and project budgeting, grant tracking, and project oversight. The following experience and/or familiarity is preferred: ability to read plans; perform culvert size calculations; stormwater terminology; and the use of denitrification for water quality improvement.SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be registered as a State of Florida Professional Engineer (PE), in accordance with the requirements of Florida Statute 471. Must possess, or obtain prior to employment, a valid Florida Driver's license and maintain said license during the term of employment. Must possess, or obtain within nine (9) months of employment, a current Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) Erosion and Sediment Control Inspectors certification and maintain said certification during the term of employment. In the event of a hurricane, major storm, natural or man-made disaster that may threaten the area, the employee will be required to perform emergency duties as directed. Both pre-storm and post-storm work will be required.
