The Veterinary Service Center (VSC) within the Department of Comparative Medicine is currently seeking a Life Science Technician III.The Veterinary Service Center (VSC) at Stanford University provides Laboratory Animal Care and operates within the Department of Comparative Medicine. We are fully accredited by the Association for Accreditation and Assessment of Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC). Our vision is to pioneer in laboratory animal care, driving research innovations from bench to bedside.The following responsibilities will be expected to be independently performed with minimal instruction:
**Animal Care-** **Maintenance of the health of research animal colony including a) Follow-up on morbidities submitted including initial assessment and physical examination of animals, implementing first aid and acquisition of biologic samples and contact of Principal Investigator or Responsible Person to obtain permission for diagnostic work-up and/or treatment. b) Administer veterinarian prescribed medications. c) Administer therapeutic modalities such as bandaging, splints, fluid therapy, oxygen therapy, safe application of external heat source, etc. d) Obtain and submit diagnostic samples to laboratory. e) Obtain diagnostic radiographs.**
**Monitoring/Research Support-** **a) Monitor the use of animals by VSC employees and research staff to assure compliance with Federal/State/University policies. Be able to take immediate action to prevent inhumane treatment of animals. Notify supervisor and/or veterinarian of compliance problems. b) Aid investigators with experimental procedures as needed. Also teach and train research staff in procedures such as animal handling and restraint, venipuncture and anesthetic techniques. c) Teach and/or train or provide guidance to less experienced or skilled technicians. Mark and identify animals on research studies, procure biological samples, prepare and administer experimental drugs, observe and examine animal research subjects for physiological changes from baseline and adverse reactions.**
**Perioperative Care-** **assess and record vital signs, administer pre-operative medications, induce anesthesia, intubate, place catheters/leads, etc., set up monitoring equipment, obtain blood gas analysis, adjust anesthetic treatment regimen based on monitoring data, provide surgical support as requested, extubate, monitor recovery, administer post-operative drugs, assess for any postoperative pain or distress, administer analgesics accordingly.**
**Medical Record Keeping-** **a) Keep accurate, timely documentation of all health care records, laboratory results, special requests, supply orders, investigator charges, and Drug Enforcement Agency records for controlled substances. b) All records will be current as to time that task was completed and thorough as to the observations made. c) Charges will be made for non-spontaneous problems or illnesses as determined by veterinarian and documented as to quantity and type of supplies dispensed or utilized and technician time taken to accomplish task and record and/or communicate findings to the responsible person.**
**Quarantine-** **Perform quarantine procedures (per written standard operating procedures) for newly arriving animals including, but not limited to dogs, non-human primates, rodents, and sheep. Such procedures will include physical examination, tuberculin testing, collection of diagnostic/biological samples, vaccinations and de-worming.**
**Ancillary Functions-** **a) Will be responsible for record keeping, inventory, storage and disposal of all pharmaceuticals used. b) Ordering of pharmaceutical supplies and equipment as directed by Supervisor. c) Laundry. d) Compiling of veterinary charges. e) Will be expected to perform surgical nursing duties including operating room set-up, anesthesia induction and maintenance (monitoring), sanitizing of surgical and pre-op rooms and cleaning of surgical instruments. f) Responsible for maintaining a clean and neat work environment. g) Must be willing to work with radioactive and/or biohazardous materials.**
**DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:**
+ **RVT License and 3 years' experience or equivalent education and experience (i.e. 5 years of experience in Animal Research Laboratory).**
+ **AALAS certification preferred. Knowledge of care and use of all medical equipment and instruments used by the Veterinary Care Staff.**

**KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED):**
+ The Technician at the III level is required to have a higher degree of skill than the LST II (for independently performing highly skilled work) and sufficient knowledge of skilled procedures that they're able to troubleshoot problems which arise in either equipment or procedures.
+ Technicians may also have highly specialized expertise in a particular technical area, or experience coordinating a variety of technical activities in a lab.
+ Must be able to read, write, understand, communicate and follow written and oral instructions in English.
**CERTIFICATIONS & LICENSES:**
When driving, must have a valid California Non-Commercial Class C license.
**PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:**

**Position Summary:** **The Barnes Lab** **in the** **Department of Biology** **at Stanford University is seeking a motivated, organized individual at the Life Science Technician 1 level to join an immunology/structural biology laboratory in the Biology department at Stanford University. The successful candidate will be responsible for large-scale expressions in bacterial and mammalian culture, and purification of proteins related to a diverse set of projects in the lab. This position is process-driven and requires production and purification of up to 15-20 proteins/week as part of a multidisciplinary research effort to develop novel therapeutics and offers opportunities to learn a range of molecular biology and biochemical techniques in a collaborative environment. Record keeping, attention to detail, and organization are essential. This is a one-year fixed term appointment with the possibility of renewal.**
**The Life Science Technician I position involves relatively simple techniques performed independently according to specific and detailed instructions. The technician may also be learning some skilled techniques under close supervision as a part of the job. Although there may be a few laboratory assistant duties at this level, the preponderance of the Life Science Technician I job involves technical procedures rather than laboratory support work.**
This is a 100% FTE, 1 year fixed-term, bargaining unit position. This position will be based on the Stanford campus.

CORE DUTIES:
· Very simple animal dissection such as removing a readily accessible organ, preparation before and assistance during surgery, administration of medication and post-surgery care.
· Histological procedures involving fixation of tissue and staining specimens with stains that do not require microscopic control in proceeding from step to step.
· Maintenance and transfer of established cell lines where the culture conditions are well defined.
· Biochemical assays (often colorimetric or spectrophotometric) of compounds or enzymatic activity using well-established procedures where the determination of any settings or adjustments is provided to the technician.
· Molecular biology assays (polymerase chain reaction, sequencing reactions) where the protocol is well established.
· Operation of instruments (e.g., spectrophotometer, fraction collector, scintillation counter, PCR machines, light microscope, cell counter) where the settings are simple or prescribed; techniques such as centrifugation (not involving density gradients) or limited black and white photography.
· Isolation, purification and maintenance of bacteria and basic manipulation of bacterial plasmids using well-established protocols; determination of the concentration of cells.
· Complete and accurate documentation of the work performed.

**POSITION PURPOSE**
Under limited supervision and/or according to established policy and procedure, is responsible for executing assigned phlebotomy (procurement of blood specimens), specimen processing, rapid testing, and Point-of-Care (POC) testing laboratory functions. As a member of the laboratory team, the Laboratory Assistant serves as the laboratory and hospital liaison to patients, clients, physicians, and staff members and adheres to hospital and laboratory policy and procedure related to blood borne pathogens and safety.
**ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS**
+ Knows, understands, incorporates, and demonstrates the Trinity Health Mission, Vision, and Values in behaviors, practices, and decisions.
+ Is proficient in the appropriate designated use of Laboratory Information System, to include but not be limited to, department order entry, specimen log-in, modify collections, reprint labels, printing collection lists, printing pending collections, and other basic computer functions.
+ Demonstrates knowledge of performing Rapid and Point-Of-Care testing in accordance with written laboratory policy and procedure.
+ Is technically proficient in procurement of blood samples via arterial, blood cultures, capillary collection (finger/heel stick), and venipuncture technique.
+ Always follows established positive patient identification procedures **PRIOR** to the collection of patient samples. Labels samples in compliance with hospital and established laboratory policy and procedure.
+ Is responsible for receiving, appropriately logging and verifying receipt of all specimen types in the laboratory according to laboratory policy and procedure. Also distributes those specimens appropriately to the designated testing areas of the laboratory.
+ Validates that all samples collected by nursing personnel from patients with indwelling vascular access are collected in accordance with laboratory policy and procedure and labeled appropriately.
+ Assembles and transports samples to the laboratory in accordance with test specifications (i.e. ammonia on ice, cold agglutinins kept warm) and alerts technologists that the samples are available for processing.
+ Is a team-player who readily assists co-workers as indicated with workload, hard-sticks and collections from children or combative patients.
+ Maintains an organized, clean, safe collection tray and work environment.
+ Assists in receiving and stocking supplies, rotating inventory, and inventory control.
+ Is capable of answering phone inquiries, to relate specimen status, and results in accordance with HIPAA standards.
+ Actively participates in departmental meetings, committees, conferences, professional development opportunities and in-services.
+ Adheres to hospital policy and procedure related to patient precautions and special considerations/guidelines that are posted inside/outside the patient room, i.e. infection control precautions, isolation precautions, mastectomy precautions.
+ Is knowledgeable of and actively participates in improving patient safety and reducing risk to patients. Complies with Safety and Infection Control Policies and Procedures.
+ Maintains confidentiality of information pertaining to clients, physicians, employees, and MercyOnebusiness.
+ Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
+ Maintains a working knowledge of applicable Federal, State, and local laws and regulations, Trinity Health's Organizational Integrity Program, Standards of Conduct, as well as other policies and procedures in order to ensure adherence in a manner that reflects honest, ethical, and professional behavior.
**MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS**
+ Requires High School Diploma or Equivalent.
+ ASCP Certification as a Clinical Laboratory Phlebotomist or equivalent is preferred?
+ Is capable of performing a variety of duties characterized by frequent change.
+ Must possess excellent verbal and written communications skills, presentation skills, advanced analytical skills, be well organized and maintain a highly professional manner and appearance.
+ Strong interpersonal, consultative and relationship building skills in order to initiate and develop productive collaborative partnership with all levels of leadership across the organization. Ability to effectively influence results, garner support and tactfully manage complex relationships within and across the organization. Extremely high level of diplomacy and tact are required. Ability to read the subtle nuances of situation and react/plan accordingly.
