**Principal Engineer** **- Thermal Engineering**

The Principal Engineer position is part of the Thermal Engineering group under Combination Product Operations at Amgen. This role requires the application of diverse and advanced engineering, scientific principles as well as excellent communication skills to enable cold chain transportation operations within the Amgen Supply Chain network.
**Responsibilities**
The successful candidate will actively participate in cross-functional teams to qualify shipping solutions that meet Amgen's expanding business needs, serving as the Subject Matter Expert (SME) addressing and resolving technical issues or challenges related to Cold Chain solutions. This position requires the application of engineering and project management principles to develop and qualify thermal packaging systems in accordance with GDP and GMP procedures.
Responsibilities include leading the qualification of thermal shipping systems, performing technical assessments and studies, and writing technical reports, manuals, specifications, SOPs, and bill-of-materials with minimal supervision. Additionally, the individual will manage collaborative relationships with internal customers and external partners, ensuring effective communication with all stakeholders. This role also involves organizing and managing the databases owned by Thermal Engineering, overseeing the shipper project request process, supporting the operation of a unique transportation simulation testing lab and expertly communicating progress to key partners in a timely manner.
This position may include domestic and international travel on an as-needed basis.

**Basic Qualifications:**
+ High school diploma / GED and 12 years of Engineering experience OR

**Preferred Qualifications:**

You will Investigate and develop innovative thermal cooling solutions for hardware systems in large scale. You will lead in the development of test plans and qualification requirements to ensure mechanical and manufacturing robustness of thermal cooling solutions (pumps, heat pipes, vapor chambers, heat sinks, cold plates etc.). You will Engage with external vendors including ODM and component vendors on design, test and production. You will Establish parameters for thermal design/testing, correlation of design/test results to model predictions. You will Collaborate with Cisco hardware design teams to develop roadmaps and risk analyses for future thermal solutions for ASIC/IC, Optics, Power and other components and systems. You will partner with several Cisco hardware design teams to improve specifications and qualification procedures.
**Minimum Qualifications:**
+ BS in Mechanical or Chemical Engineering
+ 8 - 10 years of experience in design, simulation and testing of thermal solutions for electronic devices and systems
+ 8+ years of experience in electronic device and system level air cooling technologies
+ Experience in mechanical design validation and testing for electronic assemblies
+ Knowledge of integrated circuit packaging technologies (BGA, large body size Flip Chip BGA, 2.5D and 3D Packaging)
+ Component and system reliability analysis
**Preferred Qualifications**
+ 10+ years of relevant industry experience in microelectronics cooling
+ Experience in developing liquid cooling solutions for electronic devices and systems.
+ Experience with Thermal Interface Material Thermal Conductivity Testing procedures
+ Experience with troubleshooting and thermal validation with data acquisition systems, airflow and environmental chambers
+ Experience with liquid cooling (cold plates, CDUs, manifolds, piping, characterization, pumps etc.) and high-power air-cooling solutions, such as heat pipes, VCs, and 3D VCs.

For non-quota-based sales performance elements such as strategic sales objectives, Cisco may pay up to 125% of target. Cisco sales plans do not have a minimum threshold of performance for sales incentive compensation to be paid.

About This Role

+ Own and manage the scale-up activities, process implementation and product/packaging introduction in domestic and international manufacturing sites of newly developed multi-million-dollar thermal interface materials for automotive applications.

+ Lead and inspire a high-performing team based in NA. Guide 3 direct reports in individualized career development.
+ Foster strong collaboration internally across functions and externally with strategic suppliers, research laboratories, technical partners and other stakeholders.
+ Presents scale-up reports to top management and external customers.
**What makes you a good fit**
+ Minimum a Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or related fields.
+ Minimum 5 years of relevant professional experience in process development including at least 2 years in a leadership role.
+ Knowledge of polymer science, including polymer chemistry, structure property relationships, rheology, bulk and adhesive mechanics of soft materials.
+ Track record demonstrating Strategic and Technical Expertise.
+ Demonstrated success in managing complex, cross-functional programs, supplier and customer partnerships, with a proactive, results-driven, and sustainability-focused mindset.

**Job Summary:**
The thermal systems team is responsible for the heat exchanger technology development (internal and external), component implementation in new products, VA/VE of existing products and ready to serve business needs for the entire HVAC Commercial SBU.
This is a summer internship from May into August. Depending on applicant's skill set and interest, along with business needs, the intern will help to:
+ Support a project team on a large NPD or VAVE project to achieve business revenue or margin goals via specific QDC target goals
+ Support/lead shell & tube or air to refrigerant heat exchanger technology projects that inevitably lead to higher business profitability or revenue
+ Support different SBU PGTs through Ready to Serve needs or reliability to improve business profitability.
**Where is the work:  **
This position has been designated as a Hybrid work schedule with work performed onsite 3 days each week.  
**What you will do:**
+ Assist engineers in new product development, value added engineering and technology development projects.
+ Conduct new technology, productivity and new product development projects per established processes to design new products or components and/or improve the function, reliability or cost of existing products or components.
+ Perform and document engineering analysis required to design, verify performance, and reliability of HVAC components and products.
+ Assist in data analytics work through data entry, data analysis and development of assessment tools.
+ Work effectively across functional lines (development, production, design, marketing, suppliers)
+ Ability to work Monday through Friday on a schedule that is compatible with the work schedules of co-workers and complies with current engineering core work hour guidelines and to support laboratory, drafting, and remote design center operations outside of core business hours as required.

+ Currently enrolled and pursuing a BS or Masters in Engineering or Physics
