Greets patients pleasantly and with respect. Explains purpose of patient transport. Identifies and verifies patient name and transport destination prior to transport by asking patient to state name and comparing name on hospital arm band to transport request. Identifies and uses safe techniques and proper equipment to provide a safe environment for patients and others (i.e., secures patient in wheelchair and on stretcher by fastening lap belts and restraints during transport; secures equipment with brakes prior to transfer; performs visual preventative maintenance checks and reports or corrects unsafe conditions). POSITION PURPOSE
Material Handlers of Linen under the direction of Supply Chain Management receives stores, collects, tracks and transport linen (sterile, clean and/or soiled) throughout SJMHS including off-site clinic and satellite locations. Works well with teams, independently, efficiently and in a safe manner. Routinely utilizes computer, tracking software, handheld units, and associated Supply Chain equipment. May be assigned to a linen delivery route and driving a cargo truck. Must operate the truck in a safe manner and abide by all Michigan driving laws. Driving responsibilities include performing Preventative Maintenance Inspections (PMI), monitoring physical condition of the truck, and filling truck with gas. Complete understanding and demonstrated proficiency of all area work tasks.
**ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND** **RESPONSIBILITIES**
Transports and delivers equipment, linen, scrubs, and supplies to all user departments from supply holding area. Responsible for unit inventories and coordination of linens to assure adequate daily par levels and supply needs. Works closely with Receiving Dock Handlers to coordinate flow of supplies, linen, and equipment to all user departments. Assist unloading Co-op laundry trucks and transports clean linen to the clean linen holding area. Prepares unit specific clean linen exchange carts following prescribed schedule and par level. Delivers clean linen exchange carts to specific department locations. Collects soiled linen daily from SJMHS units and transports to dock. Transfers soiled linen from SJMHS collection carts to Co-op laundry carts in preparation for transport to Co-op Laundry. Places linen replenishment orders with Co-op Laundry. Operates freight elevator to transport supplies to and from the designated areas. Maintains required distribution records. Answer telephone and respond to routine inquires and maintains good Customer Service. Operates SJMHS truck to transport linen to off-site clinics and satellite locations. **SUMMARY:**
Transfer and transport patients safely and effectively from Patient Care Areas to and from diagnostic/ testing areas including expired patients to the morgue.
**ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES MAY INCLUDE:**
Transport stable, non-monitored patients from Patient Care Areas to and from diagnostic/ testing areas (such as CT, X-ray, Angio, Hemo) and to inpatient units for admissions.
Able to effectively communicate with the patient, family, visitors, and the direct care providers.
Transporters are to directly speak with the RN or the Healthcare Provider prior to a transport and when the patient returns to the unit.
Transporters are to assist the patient with his/her restroom needs as necessary.
Able to safely transfer patients using a transfer device such as a patient sling, slide board, or other hospital approved transfer devices.
Cleans transport equipment between each patient use.
Transport, locate, and redistribute equipment such as stretchers, wheelchairs, Airpals, Stryker Glides, oxygen, and other necessary equipment to perform transports. Replaces oxygen tanks as needed (less than 500 psi).
Provides directions to families and/or visitors
Maintains current BLS certification.
Attends and participates in departmental meetings and continuing educational activities.
Provides quality patient care by considering the age specific, development and cultural needs through competent clinical practice.
Demonstrates unit/area competencies.
Maintains good rapport and cooperative relationships.
Approaches conflict in a constructive manner.
Helps to identify problems, offer solutions, and participate in their resolution. Maintains the confidentiality of information acquired pertaining to patient, physicians, colleagues, and visitors to St. Joseph Mercy Health.
