Summary :

The Medical Assistant role provides clinical and administrative support for patients under the direction of a Provider and/or licensed Nurse.

Technical Expertise

  1. Experience in phlebotomy is preferred.

**Summary of Primary Function/General Purpose of Position**

**Licensing/Certification**
Active Medical Assisting certification from one of the following (required):
+ Certified Medical Assistant (CMA); American Association of Medical Assisting, Registered Medical Assistant (RMA); American Medical Technologists, Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA); National Healthcareer Association (NHA); Nationally Registered Certified Medical Assistant (NRCMA); National Association for Health Professionals, National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA); National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT)
+ If incumbent is unable to obtain MA certification, an Assessment-Based Recognition in Order Entry (ABR-OE) is acceptable (not accepted in the state of South Carolina)
BLS Basic Life Support, American Heart Association (required at hire for Roper St Francis Healthcare locations; preferred at hire, required prior to independent patient care at BSMH)
**Education**
High School/GED (required)
Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant post-secondary education program (required within first nine months of hire)
In South Carolina (completion of one of the below is required)
-An accredited Medical assistant post-secondary education program
-A Career and technical education health sciences program approved by the South Carolina Department of Education
-A medical assisting program provided by a branch of the United States military
-A Medical assisting United States Department of Labor approved Registered Apprenticeship program

We will accept non certified/registered medical assistants, but certification is required within 12 months of start date.
**Job Summary:**
The Medical Assistant is a key component of our team that works closely with the primary care physician to deliver excellent patient care to our community, ensuring services are provided within the Medical Assisting scope and state guidelines. The Medical Assistant is responsible for reviewing and updating health records, measuring vital signs, and preparing treatment rooms for upcoming examinations.
**Essential Functions:**
+ Provides excellent customer service skills by greeting patients and the community in a respectful manner
+ Prepares & reviews patient charts for upcoming visits by verifying that all diagnostic test results, hospital reports, and other medical records are correct and up to date
+ Measures vital signs such as pulse rate, respiration, blood pressure, weight, and height
+ Performs departmental-related clerical duties such as checking inventory, stock supplies, track referrals, and answer phones as needed
+ Must possess the ability to troubleshoot and resolve problems promptly
+ Other duties as assigned
**Education:**
+ High School Degree or GED
**Licensure/Certification:**
