General Description (Purpose and Function)Performs highly skilled and technical operations with an ultrasound machine for diagnostic purposes.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities (For Non-exempt Employees Include Percent of Effort)- Performs routine and specialty sonographic procedures in cases involving all levels of difficulty.
- Operates complex and highly technical equipment including 2-D, 3-D, color, power and spectral Doppler modalities for various types of ultrasound examinations.
- Ensures the diagnostic quality of all scans through extensive knowledge of ultrasound techniques, disease processes and technical pitfalls.
- Makes preliminary interpretations of the ultrasound examination in order to bring areas of suspected pathology to the attention of the attending physician and/or fellow.
- Checks patient's chart to confirm ordered procedures and acquires pertinent clinical information from the patient, Hospital chart, electronic medical record system or other available records.
- Assists physicians in the performance of invasive and special procedures.
- Greets patients with proper identification of patient and self, escorts patients to exam room, reassures patient, explains procedures prior to beginning of procedures and answers questions when possible. Adjusts explanations, communication style and procedures according to the patient's age and/or other specific needs. Responds to patient requests to the best of his/her ability keeping patients informed of delays, problems, etc.
- Cleans and maintains ultrasound equipment, assures proper operation of instruments, reports equipment malfunction to the supervisor or his/her representative and performs quality assurance tests in accordance with described departmental policy.
- Performs portable bedside examinations, when requested.
- Assists in the clinical training of diagnostic ultrasound to co-workers, ultrasound students, residents, fellows and visiting personnel.
- Participates in quality improvement activities to ensure continuous improvement of services provided.
- Reports to supervisor any concerns and problems which may inhibit the smooth and efficient operation of the department.
- Follows hospital-wide and unit specific safety and infection control standards.
- Explains to patients and/or nurses correct preparations for the procedure to be performed such as hydration, NPO, etc.
- Completes all required paperwork and computer duties such as entering reports, recording completed procedures, logging studies, ordering procedures and added charges.

The Multi-Modality Technologist is responsible for performing complex diagnostic and therapeutic procedures through the operations of radiographic equipment to obtain highest quality of diagnostic images with the least amount of radiation exposure. Independent judgement, ingenuity and initiative are essential in addition to responsibility for designated areas, procedures and equipment. The Multi-Modality Imaging Technologist provides diagnostic imaging in multiple specialties in accordance with applicable scope and standards of practice and within the policies, values, and mission of the organization. The technologist will spend a minimum of 25% of time practicing in special discipline.
Specialized modalities include the following:
o X-ray (RT)
o Computed Tomography (CT)
o Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
o Nuclear Medicine (NM)
CORE JOB FUNCTIONS
1. Produces diagnostic imaging studies in two (2) or more specialized imaging modalities.
2. Coordinate/manage scheduling and patient flow for interdepartmental procedures.
3. Performs diagnostic imaging studies under the direction/supervision of a radiologist.
4. Assist with the education and training of new physicians.
5. Assist radiologists and PhD's in developing new protocols and imaging techniques that are unique to facility.
6. Participate in research initiatives and development of research protocols.
7. Monitor charging of procedures and supplies daily to ensure correctness.
8. Demonstrate equipment for 'site visits' for visiting physicians and administrators.
9. Provide in-service classes in section.
10. Obtains and examines the order for a scan to be aware of information such as procedures requested, patient's condition and any other special notes or comments.
11. Ensures that orders are appropriate to the type of exam recommended by physician. Notifies supervisor of any discrepancies and/or contacts physician's office for correct orders if necessary.
12. Identifies patient service requirements by establishing personal rapport with potential and actual patients and other persons in a position to understand service requirements.
13. Verify the patient's ID by checking their name and date of birth on electronic medical record and patient's wristband.
14. Always obtain necessary consents and education.
15. Perform complex specialized tasks associated with the operation of Diagnostic Radiologic scanners and related equipment in accordance with prescribed radiation safety procedures under the direction/supervision of a Radiologist using age-appropriate standards of practice.
16. Ability to integrate diagnostic, laboratory results, patient history and medical records and adapt exam as necessary.
17. Consistently demonstrates complete competence in performing scans as ordered.
18. As required during a procedure, assists positioning patients in required anatomical position for display of body for scans using immobilization and protective equipment as necessary.
19. Maintain proper aseptic technique utilizing universal precaution guidelines (hand washing, gloves, gown, mask, eye protection and equipment disinfection).
20. Assist radiologist with imaging procedures, starting IV's, and injecting contrast, if applicable.
21. Assist radiologist with procedures.
22. Evaluate scans for technical quality, collate processed images in sequence of exposure and appropriately label. Film/transmit to PACS.
23. Schedule patients for procedures; assist with clerical functions.
24. Charge procedures and supplies in UChart/Radiant.
25. Dispense radiopharmaceuticals orally, as per approved protocol.
26. Load and operate power injectors for contrast media administration.
27. Maintain accurate patient records.
28. Provide assistance with orientation and training of new technologists.
29. Gains patient cooperation by reducing anxieties; providing explanations of treatment; answering questions.
30. Provide education and training to student technologists.
31. Applies physical age-specific and/or developmental care needs of patients according to their documented physical/development requirement by competency validation checklist:
a. Children
b. Adolescents

d. Geriatric

32. Performs basic nursing functions in the patient's care i.e., assists with bedpans, emesis basins, etc. Assumes care for physical and psychological needs of the patient during scanning procedures; initiates life support measures for patients if necessary; assists in "Code Blue" procedure during medical emergencies. Performs CPR as needed.
33. Keeps work area in a clean and sanitary condition and stocks exam/dressing rooms with required supplies.
34. Provides on call coverage.
35. Reports unusual findings in a timely manner to appropriate Radiologist/Supervisory personnel.
36. Abide by to hospital/department HR policies.
37. Adheres to any regulatory body guidelines governing modality including but not limited to: Joint Commission, AHCA, ACR, FL DOH and FDA/MQSA.
38. The multi-modality technologist must rotate in the department "on call" schedule where applicable.

Must possess a valid State of Florida License. CPR and BLS certification required.
Experience:

MRI Technician Position Summary: MRI Technician Performs all aspects of MRI procedures. Knowledge of MRI procedures and equipment. Technical skills include computer proficiency in obtaining diagnostic images and screening patient information. Performs technical procedures which will require independent judgment with ingenuity, initiative, and an understanding of the anatomical positions necessary to obtain a high-quality diagnostic study. Schedule flexibility with the possibility of being on-call. May require light to medium lifting. Access and utilize the hospital and radiology information systems including PACS. Position Qualification: HS graduate or equivalent. 1 Year MRI experience (Hospital experience preferred). Satisfactory completion of formal Radiologic Technology program. Training in AMA approved school and meets requirements for registry by the ARRT. Must be self-motivated and once job skills are learned, is able to work with minimal supervision. Computer skills including knowledge of HIS, RIS and PACS. Required Licenses/Certifications: ARRT MRI certification required. Must have Certification from the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) or the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB) Florida License BLS Certification Communication Skills: Ability to effectively communicate in writing and orally with all levels of the organization.
