Job Description: Academic Advisor II

Under general direction, the Academic Advisor is responsible for providing academic guidance to students as they progress through their program. Advisors provide this assistance through a relationship-based model of holistic advising in support of the educational, career, and personal success of the student. This is a hybrid position as scheduled by the Director of Academic Advisement.

Responsibilities
  1. Meets with returning students either in person or via phone to review registration status and program requirements and to assist with student course planning and answer basic program questions.
  2. Ensures student registration in any mandatory support courses such as transitional courses, Academic support courses, etc.
  3. Answers questions from new and returning students regarding courses, registration process, and general advisement.
  4. Maintains accurate and appropriate information regarding caseload and term-to-term management of that caseload.
  5. Sends regular reminders about registration dates including Drop/Add, the Withdrawal period, and other significant registration deadlines to students.
  6. Maintains documentation of meetings and communications with students through appropriate systems (Colleague, Advise, etc.).
  7. Helps students understand and follow policies and procedures associated with registration.
  8. Removes advising-based registration holds when appropriate and directs students to the correct departments for other holds that may impact their ability to register for courses.
  9. Manages alerts through the Advise system which may be directed to the advisor through autogenerated processes or by faculty or students.
  10. Advisors collaborate with a student's Academic Coach (if applicable) to ensure the student is taking the appropriate number and types of courses and is accessing appropriate campus resources in order to achieve academic success.
  11. Provide timely data and reports as requested and directed.
  12. Contacts and schedules appointments for new students to be advised.
  13. Regularly audits student academic plans to ensure students are selecting the correct classes and are on track to graduate.
Requirements

Education, Training and/or Experience
  1. Master's Degree in College Student Personnel, Counseling, or related field.
  2. 1 year experience in academic advising at the collegiate level.

This role will help lead ISyE's efforts towards these outcomes and leadership in industrial and systems engineering education. Success in this position involves achieving three objectives:

  1. Advance ISyE's curriculum through project-based learning (PBL), experiential education, and evidence-based pedagogy that fosters collaboration, creativity, and real-world problem-solving.
  2. Develop and disseminate innovative curricular models, PBL frameworks, and educational research that enhance ISyE's national reputation for excellence in engineering education.

Responsibilities:

Teaching (30'40%)
  • Design and direct new courses and experiences that allow students to apply ISyE methods to real-world systemic problems (e.g., healthcare, supply chains, sustainability).
  • Develop training modules to align teaching across multiple ISyE courses.
  • Incorporate emerging educational technologies (AI-assisted learning, simulation tools, data visualization platforms) into instruction to enhance student engagement.
Administration and Research (40'50%)
  • Lead curricular innovation initiatives such as embedding teamwork and leadership into the ISyE curriculum.
  • Mentor faculty in evidence-based pedagogy, effective teaching, and the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL).
  • Conduct and disseminate educational research on High Impact Practices in ISyE contexts, with opportunities to publish, present, and secure external funding
  • Collaborate with Georgia Tech's Center for Teaching and Learning and other schools to promote cross-disciplinary curriculum models.
  • Develop industry partnerships for authentic PBL projects that prepare students for leadership in complex organizational environments.
Service (20%)
  • Contribute to ISyE curriculum and faculty development committees, with an emphasis on fostering innovation and continuous improvement.
  • Build and sustain communities of practice around teaching, mentoring, and student success.
  • Provide leadership in professional societies (INFORMS, ASEE, IISE) through workshops, panels, and publications that raise ISyE's national profile.

  • Experience developing and/or implementing research-based instructional strategies.
  • Experience identifying and leading curricular change projects
  • Experience designing, implementing, and assessing faculty development activities to increase the use of evidence based instructional strategies in a variety of courses.
  • Experience with Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL), Discipline Based Educational Research (DBER), or Engineering Education Research (EER).
  • Experience with pursuing and managing externally funded projects to support educational change or research.

Campus Academic Dean Description


We are now inviting qualified candidates for the Academic Dean of our Atlanta campus. The successful candidate will oversee the academic functions for the campus, working with the Campus President, and the institutional Chief Academic Officer.


Responsibilities

  • Provide coordination and overall daily supervision of the academic functions, and facilitate collaboration with the main campus personnel in these areas.
  • Provide continuing attention to matters of scholarly activity, in-service training, and performance review for academic personnel at this Site.
  • Assure that office, classroom, and laboratory space and equipment are efficiently utilized at this Site.
  • Maintain and have available detailed records for each faculty member at this Site, showing each faculty member's training, experience, and record of service to the college. Such records shall be maintained on a current basis.
  • Construct and recommend, following consultation with department chairpersons and Program Directors at this Site, a quarterly schedule of classes.
  • Assist in coordination for Site activities relating to reviewing and handling of personnel and student matters (i.e., disciplinary, conduct, etc.) and communicate with the Campus President pertinent information and recommended actions, in collaboration with the office of the Chief Academic Officer.
  • Collaborate with academic and student services units at this Site regarding budget requests and ensure compilations of recommendations reviewed during annual budget meetings.
  • Prepare and compile regular periodic administrative and faculty performance evaluations as appropriate.
  • Participate in annual revision of the college catalog and other periodic revisions to policy manuals, job descriptions, etc.
  • Work closely with the Vice Chancellor for Institutional Advancement and Effectiveness in formulating and implementing the strategic plan, including continuing assessment and evaluation to access institutional effectiveness.
  • Participate in activities relating to the development and evaluation of new and existing programs.
  • Prepare, or assist in preparation, of applicable reports to accrediting, state, federal, or other agencies.
  • Ensure participation of assigned representatives from the Learning Site in institutional committees as appropriate.
Requirements:

Education

  • Earned Doctorate in Education or related field, a minimum of a Master's degree and progress toward earning a Doctoral degree required.

Experience

  • Five years of professional experience in healthcare, higher education and hospital experience highly preferred.
  • Experience in teaching preferred.
  • Experience in education theory and methodology, preferred.
  • Experience in program assessments and outcome measures.
  • Experience in accreditation processes.
  • Experience and knowledge of Campus Nexus preferred.

**Description**
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
+ Oversees undergraduate or graduate degree programs.
+ Advises students on major and graduation requirements; suggests alternatives they may not have considered.
+ Responds to inquiries and complaints from faculty and students which requires interpretation of policies and procedures.
+ Investigates student concerns and recommends appropriate course of action.
+ Serves as point of contact for faculty and students concerning practical implementation of educational policy and procedures; may recommend educational policy change.
+ Responds to inquiries from prospective students regarding degree requirements.
+ Advises department chair and director regarding policies and procedures.
+ Administers student online registration, tracks students' progress toward the degree, and verifies requirements have been completed.
+ May manage one or more academic programs, evaluate program data and prepare publications.
+ Researches, compiles data, and writes reports for accreditation purposes.
+ Typically monitors and reconciles program budget and approves expenditures.
+ May oversee the disbursement of student stipends and grant awards.
+ May hire, train, and supervise student assistants, and monitor time and attendance.
+ Performs related responsibilities as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
+ Bachelor's degree in a field related to the department's or program's area of specialty or a related field and two years of experience in student admissions, financial aid, registration or a related field, or equivalent combination of experience, education, and training.
NOTE: Position tasks are generally required to be performed in-person at an Emory University location. Remote work from home day options may be granted at department discretion. Emory reserves the right to change remote work status with notice to employee.
