The Impact You’ll Make in this Role

As an Application Engineer – Aerospace & Defense, you will have the opportunity to tap into your curiosity and collaborate with some of the most innovative people around the world. Here, you will make an impact by:

• Building technical relationships across key customers in the aerospace Defense segment

• Translating customer needs into potential 3M solutions

• Connecting 3M technology to customer needs

• Understanding customer technology adoption and commercialization process and aligning 3M internal processes

• Providing application support and training to customers, including in-person visits and product installations

• Building and managing a new product pipeline/roadmap for Defense accounts, including advocating for new product development when needed

• Delivering the technical components of product spec-in

• Collaborating internally with Sales/Marketing, Product Platforms, and central R&D teams on technology and capability development

Your Skills and Expertise

To set you up for success in this role from day one, 3M requires (at a minimum) the following qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in a science or engineering discipline (completed and verified prior to start)

• Five (5) years of application engineering, product development, new product commercialization, or role translating customer needs into technical product performance criteria in a private, public, government or military environment

Additional qualifications that could help you succeed even further in this role include:

• Masters’s or Ph.D. degree in a science or engineering discipline

• Ten (10) years of application engineering, product development, new product commercialization, or other similar role translating customer needs into technical product performance criteria in a private, public, government or military environment

• Comprehensive knowledge of defense and aerospace industry materials, technologies, processes, and specifications

• Direct experience working in the military, at a national lab, with Defense primes, or with enabling technology companies and demonstrated understanding of Defense technology ecosystem

• Demonstrated ability to navigate complex problems and identify innovative solutions

• Project management experience

What Youll Do

• Program complex parts for 4th and 5th axis CNC mills and live-tool lathes using Mastercam
• Develop, optimize, and troubleshoot toolpaths to improve cycle times and part quality
• Collaborate with machinists and production teams on setups, tooling selection, and process improvements
• Support new product introductions, prototyping, and production runs in a fast-paced environment

What You Bring

• Strong Mastercam programming experience with multi-axis CNC mills and live-tooling lathes
• Proven ability to write, edit, and optimize programs for 4-axis, 5-axis, and complex turning centers
• Solid understanding of tooling, fixturing, feeds/speeds, and machining best practices
