Summary This position is located within the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service, U.S. National Poultry Research Center in Athens, Georgia. The primary purpose of this position is to assist the Attending Veterinarian by performing duties in the areas of animal resources acquisition and management, veterinary technician and animal care, quality management, and training. Responsibilities Evaluates normal temperatures, respiratory rates, heart rates, and basic blood values of common domestic and laboratory birds. Assists Veterinarians, scientists and/or technical staff in handling animals and participating during experimental studies. Follows all applicable safety and biosafety requirements, rules, and policies to prevent job related injuries and the transmission of animal diseases. Collects biological specimens such as blood, feces, feathers, tissues, oropharyngeal and cloacal swabs, and culture samples from animals or animal facilities. Additional Information Additional Conditions of Employment: PPE provides necessary protection against biological and chemical hazards but may increase the risk of accidents due to decreased vision, hampered communication, limited mobility and dexterity. Strict agent safety regulations are applied to prevent the escape of animal pathogens from the work environment. The health status of personnel is monitored periodically using biologic and serologic tests and physical examinations. Physical Demands: The incumbent spends 20-30% of the time at a desk. The remaining time is spent performing activities involving the collection of biological specimens and the observation and treatment of newly received animals. Moderate to heavy physical exertion may be required to move equipment, feed bags (50 lb.), and carcasses. Stooping, bending, reaching, and active walking are required. Working Environment: The work is performed in an office, indoor and outdoor animal holding facilities, necropsy rooms, and laboratories. Temperature extremes are common. Exposure to disagreeable odors, working around frightened and unpredictable animals, and exposure to the risks and hazards of harmful biological, chemical, and physical agents are possible. This includes working in biosecurity animal housing facilities which require special precautions and close coordination of personnel, animals, equipment, and facility safety controls. Contact with horses, birds (agricultural and pet birds) and rabbits are normally permitted, but restrictions may be placed on staff working with or near-contagious agents affecting these species. IHRC, Inc. provides scientific, bioinformatics, management consulting, information management, and administrative program support to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and other Federal and private sector clients. The successful candidate will be a part-time employee of IHRC, Inc., and will be assigned to the Laboratory Research Branch (LRB), National Hansen's Disease Program (NHDP), Healthcare Systems Bureau (HSB), Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), 5 Skip Bertman Drive, Baton Rouge, Louisiana to provide care for animals including armadillos and mice, while practicing infection control to prevent any contaminations.
On-site federal contractors and approved visitors to federal sites may be required to have either a completed Certification of Vaccination form indicating they have been fully vaccinated or proof of negative COVID-19 test results in the last 72 hours in order to enter a federal facility. This impacts all IHRC employees that are assigned to work on a federal site.
SCOPE OF WORK
The Animal Health / Veterinary Technician (Part-time) will provide care for animals including armadillos and mice, while practicing infection control to prevent any contaminations.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide care for a variety of M. leprae infected laboratory animals including immunocompetent and immunodeficient armadillos, nude mice infected, knockout mice and conventional mice along with the uninfected animals (all above mentioned species of mice and armadillos). To include:
- Provide daily food and water supply for the research colony.
- Sanitize cages for approximately 60 nude mice cages, 75 knock mice cages, 85 conventional cages, and 60 armadillos cages and environment of animal rooms including general sweeping, mopping, and pressure washing.
- The mice (all species) cages and armadillo cages shall be cleaned at least twice a week.
- All waste generated during cleaning shall be disposed of through the red bag waste stream.
- Humanely euthanize animals by, CO2 gas, or by cervical fractures.
- Handle and restrain armadillos, nude mice, knockout mice, and conventional mice for injection with experimental drugs, antibiotics, and other medical treatments.
- Administer feed additives, special diets and medication as directed.
- Handle and restrain armadillos and mice (all aforementioned species) during routine examinations.
- Perform standard operating procedures for animal care in the NHDP Vivarium, to include:
- Animal husbandry, occupational health and safety, facility sanitation, equipment operation, processing of newly arrived animals, animal transportation, feed and bedding delivery, environmental and disease control, euthanasia, and Sorting and autoclaving laundry for the vivarium.
- Make recommendations to the attending Vet, Research Staff, and technicians regarding animal care and facility operations.
- Donning and doffing of the appropriate Personal Protective Equipment for the National Hansen's Disease Animal Vivarium
- Maintain population and cleaning records, to include:
- Daily time, temperature, and date.
- Cage Cards (Describe the animal's health, research experiment, and feeding habits).
- Operate large mechanical cage washing machine, high-pressure spray cleaner, and autoclave with the proper sterilization indicators.
- Provide basic nursing assistance to armadillos as follows:
- First aid
- Administer medication
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Six months experience in caring for laboratory animals or related work
- Physical ability to repeatedly lift bags weighing up to 55 pounds (25 kilograms) and frequently move wheeled cage racks through corridors
- Strength and agility to capture, restrain and carry medium sized mammals without causing harm to the animal or self
- Must have no known allergies to animals, feed, or chemicals
- Must be able to wear a respirator
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and standard procedures

- Perform essential, daily animal care to include cleaning animal enclosures, providing clean caging, bedding, and enrichment, and supplying feed and water.
- Handle and restrain animals as needed by using appropriate techniques to allow for the care and research to be performed in a safe and humane manner.
- Sanitize animal rooms, cages, equipment, corridors, and support areas using appropriate techniques per standard operating procedures. Operate rack washers, tunnel washers, bedding dispensers, vacuum bedding disposal system, autoclaves, and floor cleaning machines. Empty garbage dumpster and operate trash compactor. Properly package waste materials to be sent for incineration.
- Receive incoming animal shipments and distribute animals into assigned rooms.
- Monitor environment and/or machinery and equipment by obtaining, documenting, and comparing data against established standards. Maintain records by collecting and recording data to facilitate management of the facility.

Specific Responsibilities :
Surgical Support
- Performs minor surgeries and assists the clinical veterinarians or other qualified individuals with surgical procedures. Prepares sterile instrument packs and prepares surgical suite animals for aseptic surgery. Administers anesthetic agents, intravenous fluids, and monitors anesthesia and post-surgical recovery. Submits surgery billing statements to CCM business office on a monthly basis for recharge to investigators (essential function for cost recovery).
Clinical Rounds
- Performs daily rounds to triage new animal health reports and monitor ongoing clinical cases. Communicates with veterinary staff and laboratory personnel to notify and update regarding the status of clinical cases. Performs physical examinations, make treatment recommendations, performs treatments, and consults with clinical veterinarians regarding health reports.
Environmental Enrichment
- Ensures that environmental and social enrichment is provided to the laboratory animals. Facilitates training of a variety of research animals (NHPs, pigs, cats) in various areas (clicker training, etc.). Orders and prepares enrichment supplies. Observes and oversees pair and group housing.
Colony Health Sentinel Program
- Coordinates the rodent colony health monitoring program (Sentinel Program) and incoming rodent quarantine program. Responsibilities include scheduling of quarterly and quarantine sentinel shipments with the diagnostic laboratory, ordering of replacement sentinels and review of the testing results.
Drugs, Supplies and Testing
- Dispenses non-controlled drugs and supplies form the CCM pharmacy to laboratory personnel. Performs periodic inventories of drugs, supplies, assay kits and instruments. Prepares and submits animals or specimens (blood, tissue, feces) for testing at diagnostic laboratories as determined necessary by the clinical veterinarians.
Teaching/Training
- Trains animal care staff, laboratory personnel and interns in proper animal restraint, barrier technique and asepsis. Trains laboratory personnel, interns, and AHTs in technical procedures such as intravenous injections, blood collection, intubation, catheterization, etc.
Regulatory
- Remains current with all regulations pertaining to laboratory animals including the Guide, Animal Welfare Act, etc. Maintains technical familiarity with a wide range of clinical and experimental procedures for a variety of laboratory animal species. Participates in various staff meetings, staff training and continuing professional education. Becomes familiar with relevant Animal Study Protocols and meets with investigators and laboratory personnel to discuss research needs and animal health concerns.

Minimum Qualifications:
- Successful completion of a college level curriculum in veterinary technology requiring a minimum of two years of full-time academic study in a program accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association OR completion of a 4-year degree in animal science, biology, veterinary science, zoology or related field.
- Minimum of 4 years' experience as an animal health technician in laboratory animal medicine OR 5 years' experience as a veterinary assistant or veterinary technician in a veterinary medical facility and
- AALAS certified ALAT or equivalent combination of relevant work or education experience.
