**Specific Duties & Responsibilities**
_Surgical-Anesthetist Responsibilities_
+ Prepare animals for imaging, minimally invasive procedures, and/or surgery by performing manual restraint, pre-anesthetic administration, IV placement, intubation, clipping and scrubbing animals, anesthetic administration, anesthetic monitoring, and patient positioning.
+ Prepare tissue, blood, and urine samples for submission and shipping to third party labs for evaluation.
+ Place central arterial and venous access lines.
+ Act as the operating room nurse, surgical assistant, lab manager or anesthetist.
+ Provide post-operative care including pain management, cleaning, and animal comfort.
+ Set up and break down surgical & imaging facilities including cleaning and disinfecting the suite and cleaning, packing and sterilizing instruments.
+ Prevent and handle anesthesia emergencies, mechanical ventilation, and CPR.
+ Endotracheal intubation of difficult species including birds, rabbits, and pigs.
+ Imaging and operative room assistant including basic operation of imaging equipment (X-ray fluoroscopy and MRI), physiological monitors, and anesthesia machines.
+ Maintain all clinical and surgical equipment including x-ray and anesthesia machines, ECG, cautery, autoclaves, etc.
+ Perform intake and discharge of veterinary clinical cases.

+ Draft animal protocols and health, safety, and environment documents pertaining to the laboratory.
+ Maintain inventory and supplies used in lab.
+ Maintain general cleanliness and organization of laboratories.
+ Maintain logs that adhere to standards for JHU, JHMI, USDA, and NIH policies.
_Clinical Care and Health Maintenance_
+ Administer medication for treatment through multiple routes including oral and parenteral.
+ Obtain samples from multiple species including but not limited to blood, urine, feces and lavage fluids.
+ Perform health maintenance for dogs, cats, pigs and rabbits.
_Teaching_
+ Teach investigators, fellows and technical staff to perform various technical procedures.
+ Train personnel in routine clinical care, daily maintenance of animals under medical treatment, maintenance and monitoring animals during all phases of anesthesia, including proper dosage and proper route of anesthesia for a variety of species.
_Inventory Control_
+ Stock pharmacy with veterinary supplies, lab supplies and drugs.

_Administrative Responsibilities_
+ Develop standard operating procedures.

**Specific Duties and Responsibilities**
+ Maintains the animal facility, cage wash area, and loading dock to meet the standards of the Animal Welfare Act, the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals _,_ and other state, federal and local animal welfare laws and regulations.
+ Hires, evaluates performance, and takes corrective action for HR-related issues of animal care staff
+ Conducts on-the-job training and orientation for new animal care staff in concert with training and compliance staff. Participates in training sessions both as a student and teacher.
+ Ensures proper and adequate husbandry care of animals by animal care staff including environmental conditions
+ Plans and coordinates the activities of the animal care staff. Schedules the unit's work after consulting with the Animal Care Manager and takes responsibility for its completion.
+ Develops and implements schedules for equipment maintenance, cage changing and sanitizing equipment, rooms, and corridors.
+ Orders feed, bedding and supplies, and maintains sufficient inventory
+ Helps oversee facility maintenance, renovations, and planning
+ Prepares the unit for USDA, IACUC inspections, and AAALAC site visits
+ Supports the development and creation of standard operating procedures (SOPs) and other related documents with direction from the Animal Care Manager, Director of Laboratory Animal Management, and veterinarians.
+ Implements SOPs and other guidelines by communicating to and training animal care staff. Takes corrective action for non-compliance.
+ Assists with the animal census records by scanning animal cage cards on a monthly basis.
+ Trains team leads and assist when needed.
+ Monitors the health status of research animals and arranges for veterinary care, if needed.
+ Corresponds with JHU investigators, research staff, and facilities.

+ Suggests changes to improve the efficiency and quality of animal care, cage wash and the loading dock. Identifies problems and develops and implements solutions.
+ Assists in the assignment of animal housing and procedure rooms based on researcher's needs
+ Completes all required JHU training(s)
+ Has knowledge of animal cage wash, animal husbandry, and the loading dock and the ability to perform the duties of all staff working under their supervision

+ Must be able to work during emergencies, unexpected incidents, and disasters.
**Minimum Qualifications**
+ High school diploma or graduation equivalent.
+ Two-year's experience in an animal research facility
+ Must be able to work a flexible schedule including rotating weekends and holidays.
+ Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond HS Diploma/Graduation Equivalent, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
**Technical Qualifications or Specialized Certifications:**
+ Certification by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science at the Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician level (ALAT) required

We are seeking an Animal Care Technician II to join our Insourcing Solutions team located in Baltimore, MD
As the Animal Care Technician II, you will provide husbandry and technical support to the investigative staff in the production and maintenance of required animal models.
Additional responsibilities include:
+ Perform daily animal husbandry duties to maintain quality and health of research animals, including: perform daily water bottle /automatic water line and cage checks; provide appropriate food and water; perform cage changing and/or cage cleaning. Accurately document animal health concerns.
+ Monitor environmental parameters and maintain written records.
+ Assist with restraint and handling of various animal species. Safely transfer non-human primates from cage to cage.
+ Provide support to rodent breeding program, including setting up mating pairs, weaning, recordkeeping, and performing associated technical procedures, including phenotype observations.
+ Ensures that cages are identified correctly with information regarding strain or lineage, sex and sexual status.
+ Maintain detailed breeding records indicating the birth date, animal age, and fertility data of each animal. Responsible for computerized or manual breeding records to maintain pedigree information on each animal. Cares for potential transgenic births, determines sex, and weans when appropriate.
+ Provide animal identification, i.e. ear notching, ear tagging, and toe clipping.
+ Assist with specialized care of animals including preparation of special diets, medicated water, care of immature, aged, and special study animals. Administer drugs or treatments to animals as directed.
+ Assist research staff with logistics and scheduling of projects, and conduct research and laboratory support services.
**Job Qualifications**
The following are minimum requirements related to the Animal Care Technician II position:
+ High school diploma or GED
+ 1 year of experience working with research animals
