Job Summary
The Engineer, Bridge Design is responsible for creating designs and leading design projects assigned to consultants for bridges across CN's network in accordance with internal policies and American Railway Engineering and Maintenance of Way Association (AREMA) guidelines. The position is considered a Professional Engineer technical role and requires self-sufficient competencies in structural engineering principles and mastery of Company policies as well as Bridges and Structures (B&S) management procedures.
Main Responsibilities
Structures Design and Project Management
• Coordinate consultant design assignments
• Design railway bridges
• Prepare preliminary and detailed designs of highway and railway bridge structures in concrete, steel, and timber
• Provide costing information and resolve queries during bridge construction
• Prepare detailed cost estimates and project schedules for projects to minimize costs and disruptions to railway operations
• Provide engineering support and training to staff members and to field forces during construction
• Prepare fabrication specifications and tender documents
• Handle and track-outsourced service contracts, reviews and processes outsourced services invoicing
Safety
• Verify and ensure compliance of work or actions prescribed in engineering drawings and specifications
• Conduct in field and documentary audits of bridge inspection reports
• Participate in construction safety audits
Training and Development
• Participate in field visits to familiarize with the Network and B&S plant inventory in conjunction with field inspections, safety blitz, construction work blocks, or reconnaissance trips
• Assist with reviews of AREMA Manual of Practice development and revisions
• Assist in development of Junior Design Engineer
• Ensure all required training is completed in a timely manner
• Ensure proper adherence to requirements for maintaining licensure as a Professional Engineer
Working Conditions
The role has standard working conditions in an office environment with a regular work week from Monday to Friday. Due to the nature of the role, the incumbent must be able to meet tight deadlines, handle pressure, and stress. The role requires minimal travel (5%) with overnight stays within the region and occasional work outside the normal working hours. The role is partially performed outdoors in various types of weather and environmental conditions. The incumbent must be available to work shifts and weekends when necessary. The role requires being available on-call 24/7 to respond to critical incidences.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES PROCESS MANAGEMENT

Maintains relationship with ClarkDietrich's customers through courteous phone conversations with prompt customer service.

Increases the specification of ClarkDietrich through shop drawings and by providing technical information to customers.

Produce a CAD/BIM production detail drawing package of cold-formed steel structures including fully detailed curtain wall and load bearing plan views, section views 3D, isometric and other structural details.

Produce the design of cold-formed steel structures including curtain and load bearing wall, lateral bracing and/or stability analysis and truss designs.

Produce calculations in a logical, reviewable and presentable format for internal review/approval and submission to the client.

Perform structural calculations using analysis programs or manual methods as necessary to complete the calculations.

Collaborate with team members to accurately complete engineering tasks in a timely manner.

Ensure project drawings and calculations are reviewed and approved by the Project Manager, Engineering Manager or General Manager.

Increase the specification of ClarkDietrich through shop drawings and provide technical information to clients.

Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS:
ENGINEERING TECHNICAL SKILLS

A thorough knowledge of structural engineering and a formal education in building design is preferred.

Flexibility in design with ability to solve problems with various approaches.

Ability to perform engineering duties using a computer and computer analysis.
-
A working knowledge of structural building components, including CAD-related experience in structural building application is required.

Formal education in framing standards, familiarity with, and understanding of framing installation methods, as well as the assembly of structural building components.

Proficiency in the use of computer software to perform analysis required. Includes expertise in AUTOCAD and Revit. Experience in BIM a Plus.

EDUCATION AND CERTIFICATION

Bachelor's degree in engineering (Civil/Structural preferred, Construction Engineering, Architectural Engineering, and other disciplines that include statics course work will be considered)

(A plus, not required) Professional Engineering certification or have the ability to take the exam to become an Engineerâ€in-Training (E.I.T)

The military equivalent will be recognized in lieu of education and/or experience.

- Advanced math skills including geometry, calculus, and finite element methods.

The ideal candidate should have significant experience in design work (excluding field work). Since the business focuses on design, the primary responsibility will involve creating structural designs and drawings. As a Structural Design Engineer, you will play a key role in the design and analysis of structural components for a variety of projects, with a focus on heavy industry, metals, chemical/petrochemical, and environmental sectors. You will be responsible for ensuring the structural integrity and safety of designs while meeting and exceeding client expectations.

Responsibilities & Duties
- Structural Design:
- Lead structural design efforts for various projects, ensuring compliance with industry standards.
- Perform detailed structural analysis and calculations for diverse structures.
- Collaboration and Coordination:
- Work collaboratively with interdisciplinary teams, including electrical and civil engineers, to ensure integrated project delivery.
- Coordinate with other disciplines to optimize structural design within the overall project scope.
- Project Management:
- Manage multiple structural design projects concurrently within established schedules and budgets.
- Assist in the development of feasibility studies for structural components.
- Client Interaction:
- Engage with clients to understand project requirements, present design proposals, and ensure client satisfaction.
- Prepare and review project proposals, providing accurate cost estimates.
- Safety and Compliance:
- Perform all structural design work in adherence to safety standards and regulations.
- Ensure that designs comply with relevant building codes and industry regulations.
Job Requirements:
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Structural Engineering.
- 8+ or more years of relevant work experience in structural design, preferably in heavy industry or related sectors.
- Professional Engineer (PE) registration is preferred.
- Proficient in structural analysis software and design tools.
- Familiarity with industry standards and codes.
- Strong communication and presentation skills.
- Ability to manage projects and budgets effectively.
U.S. Citizen, Green Card Holders, and candidates with current work visas already in the United States will be considered for this opportunity.
