JOB SUMMARY :
The Animal Shelter Support Specialist is responsible for managing adoption outreach and placement of shelter animals and coordinating community cat initiatives, including Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) programs. This role acts as a vital bridge between the public and the shelter by facilitating adoptions, promoting community cat welfare, educating the public, and ensuring animals are placed into safe and loving homes.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
General duties:
Shelter Adoptions & Outreach
Match adoptable animals with prospective adopters through counseling, follow-ups, and education.
Plan and attend off-site adoption events and partnerships with rescue groups or pet stores.
Assist in photographing and marketing animals via social media, websites, and promotional materials.
Ensure proper documentation for adoptions, including contracts and microchip registration.
Follow up with adopters post-adoption to provide support and troubleshoot any issues.
Community Cat Program
Coordinate TNR services and maintain a database of community cat colonies.
Serve as a liaison to caretakers, volunteers, veterinary providers, and the public regarding community cats.
Provide humane trapping guidance, supplies, and education to citizens participating in TNR efforts.
Monitor colony conditions and outcomes, reporting health and safety concerns.
Track spay/neuter data and maintain compliance with local ordinances and program goals.
Customer Service & Public Education
Respond to public inquiries regarding community cats, adoptions, and animal care.
Promote responsible pet ownership, spay/neuter, and vaccination awareness.
Administrative Support
Maintain accurate animal records, colony data, and adoption logs.
Prepare monthly reports on TNR activities, adoption rates, and program outcomes.
Collaborate with animal care and field staff to identify adoptable and releasable animals.
Regular and predictable attendance is required.
Performs other duties as required
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED :
Education and Experience:
High school diploma or GED required;
At least 1 year of experience in animal sheltering, rescue, or animal welfare programs.
Knowledge of community cat issues, TNR practices, and animal adoption procedures.
Strong communication, organizational, and customer service skills.
Comfortable handling cats, dogs, and other shelter animals safely and humanely.
Must be able to work weekends, evenings, and attend off-site events.
Licenses and Certifications:
Valid Class I Driver's License and a satisfactory Motor Vehicle Record (MVR).
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Working knowledge of the animal shelter profession.
Knowledge of the safe handling and general welfare of large and small animals.
Knowledge of pertinent animal control laws, regulations and ordinances.
Knowledge of work hazards.
Ability to care for animals.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships public officials, other employees and to deal with the public in a courteous and pleasant manner.
Strong leadership skills with the ability to think quickly on your feet.
Ability to professionally advocate Hall County’s’ position on issues.
Able to educate people about the process of TNR in a clear and effective manner.
Knowledge and experience with feral cats and trapping cats, and knowledge about how to safely operate cat traps.
Excellent people skills. You must be friendly, confident in your knowledge and able to convey your message clearly.
Good management skills. You will be working with diverse groups and individuals, keeping everyone on the same page.
Accurate record-keeping and ability to provide monthly reports on various programs.
Proficiency with Internet navigation and a variety of computer software applications, including Microsoft Office and Google. Ability to learn additional software applications, as needed.
Strong interpersonal skills to handle sensitive and confidential situations. The ideal person for this job is a team player, personable, professional, upbeat and energetic, takes the initiative, and uses tact and diplomacy.
