Although clinical needs have been the driving force behind the growth of hospital medicine nationally, our program has always had a major academic focus on research, quality improvement, and teaching. The Comprehensive Care Physician (CCP) Program is an innovative program within the Section of Hospital Medicine that provides patients with complex medical a physician who cares for them both in the hospital and the clinic. The CCP model has been studied in a randomized trial since 2012 with funding from the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation (CMMI) and has shown statistically significant improvements to patient experience and health outcomes and decreases in hospitalization and spending. In addition, this model and study have evolved to since to better engage patients and address social determinants of health. Since, 2016 and with funding from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and now the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI), we have created and are evaluating the Comprehensive Care Community & Culture Program (C4P), which adds to CCP 1) systematic screening of unmet social needs, 2) access to a community health worker and 3) access to community-based arts and culture programming. C4P is also being evaluated through a randomized trial and has produced promising preliminary findings, particularly in activating patients. The C4P program is also being piloted at Ingalls Memorial Hospital and the CCP team is developing proposals to implement a more formal study of CCP/C4P at Ingalls as part of a multi-center randomized trial. As part of the C4P program, the team has also developed a series of programs to address clusters of unmet social needs including, 1) a Social Service Alignment Learning Collaborative to address patients experiencing many needs simultaneously, 2) a Healthy Living program to address patients with needs for healthy eating, food, and exercise, 3) a Living Well Financially program to address patients with needs for money and budgetary needs, and 4) a Roommates project to better understand and assist patients with housing-related needs. Job Summary The Section of Hospital Medicine seeks a Research Program Manager who will supervise the CCP/C4P research infrastructure, including a team of Research Coordinators and Research Assistants. The position will also directly oversee the C4P study and program at Ingalls Memorial Hospital. The CCP Research Program Manager manages a team of professional staff and volunteers responsible for research projects and related programming. Oversees research operations and ensures compliance of research activities with institutional, state, and federal regulatory policies, procedures, directives, and mandates. Provides program management of strategic programs that develop from the core research projects. 1) Manages research professionals and support staff involved with planning, monitoring, and compliance aspects of research projects. 2) Develops goals and operating procedures, practices, and guidelines for research activity based on department strategy. 3) Provides program management to strategic projects, including implementing and managing research operations of CCP at Ingalls and key C4P research programming, including the Roommates project Responsibilities Manages and provides oversight to approximately four (4) research coordinators and 15-20 Research Assistants and Senior AmeriCorps members. This includes hiring and training research coordinators on their assigned projects, managing schedules and timecards, addressing their questions and/or concerns, ensuring they have the resources and tools they need to conduct the research activities on a daily basis, and assigning projects. Provides mentorship and guidance to trainees to identify and reach their professional goals. Partners with UChicago career services to hire undergraduate and masters level students looking for research exposure. Manages all related study protocols, quality improvement initiatives, and data management. Maintains good working relationships across the research project, including working closely with Dr. Meltzer, CCP research and the analytics team. Works with the informatics team and data programmers to design and manage database to streamline research operations. Teams with UCM faculty to build research partnerships and share research infrastructure. Leads research operations management projects such as managing budgets to ensure funding of all research activities and personnel, Institutional Review Board (IRB) submissions, research protocols, and creating databases through REDCap. Takes part in research design and analysis, completing such tasks as developing research participant screening tools, leading data cleaning initiatives and/or data quality improvement processes, which might include managing and designing operational work flows. Validates and documents CCP research documents, research processes/methods and maintains csv files for programmers and informatics teams. Leverages technical skills to conduct data analysis and evaluation of federal and privately funded health services research projects, including observational studies and randomized control trials as well as qualitative research. Produces reports and presentations as needed for funders and diverse audiences. Working closely with Ms. Perish, manages staffing of research team members and volunteers with key C4P programming, specifically with the Artful Living Program, Social Service Alignment Learning Collaborative, Healthy Living program, Living Well Financially program, and related projects. Provides research program management of C4P community garden efforts on campus and at the Woodlawn community garden. Acts as primary liaison between the C4P social service team and the Health Lab team managing the Roommates project. Provides direct supervision to volunteers and staff at the CCP program Ingalls Memorial Hospital and manages all related research infrastructure and operations. Works closely with the CCP/C4P Director on related projects, including support on grant applications. Manages and directs the protocol review process for all clinical trials which includes the receipt and coordination of protocols for review, committee meetings, and clinical research conferences.
