The Senior Civil-Structural Engineer/Designer should have at least ten years of design engineering experience in an EPC setting. Responsibilities are varied and include preparing and providing estimates, scope of work documents, technical reviews, analysis and design, and input for

Proposal/Geotechnical Investigation, Engineering, Bid and Construction phases.

As well, assist project and engineering teams in developing and implementing site-specific civil-structural design methodology, estimates, and scope of works with the company budget and schedule in mind.

Emphasis is on experience with Hydraulic and Hydrological design of industrial plants in the Gulf Coast and other regions across the US.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with multiple stakeholders
  • Ability to collaborate with in-house Engineering Delivery team and other E&C Centers as well as third-party contractors and firms.
  • Verify input received from internal and external design team members and vendors by highlighting apparent inconsistencies, errors and omissions.
  • Interface and expedite outside EPC/engineering entities to perform scope, budget and schedule.
  • Check EPC construction deliverables for thoroughness of design and engineering
  • detail.
  • Perform engineering and design as required for civil-structural design typical for industrial infrastructure and plant construction
  • Assist the project and construction team in resolving civil-structural issues as they
  • arise during engineering and construction.
  • Review vendor/fabricator shop drawings as required.
  • Answer RFIs and TQs as required.
  • Support the engineering delivery group on other technical requests as required.
  • including interdisciplinary aspects (piping, E&I, etc)
  • Contribute to the improvement of design in-house or techniques, or improvements
  • (dynamic equipment, cooling towers, piling etc)
  • Be able to obtain PE and provide responsible charge duties for civil-structural
  • scope
  • Have a good understanding of structural design in terms of foundations, structural
  • steel, connection designs
  • Have a good understanding of civil-related activities, including hydrological design,
  • routing for both greenfield and brownfield developments

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelors Degree in Civil Engineering with PE (hard requirement)
  • 10 -25 years of experience in an EPC setting. Over 25 years is overqualified
  • Travel on average 25% to project locations and engineering offices as required. Travel will be international mostly.
  • Must be able to wear safety equipment as required by the safety department for personal protection
  • Current TX Professional Engineering License
  • Hydrological Design of Stormwater and Effluent Systems for Industrial Plants, including hydraulic structures and conveyances
  • Ability to understand, interpret and implement local regulations pertaining to temporary and permanent detention, retention, and sediment basins
  • Capability with Civil-3D, Storm CAD, HEC-RAS, Atlas 13 & 14 (Texas) etc
  • Design of Concrete Structures & Piles as required
  • Design of Steel Structures and Anchorage as required
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD, Smart Plant Review and Navisworks.
  • Capability with Structural Design Programs, Such as STAAD, Mat3D
  • Ability to use standard and national building codes (IBC, ASCE, ACI, AISC etc) for design, population of site data sheets, and more
  • Be motivated, proactive and willing to take on new challenges
  • Support and liaise with a wide variety of people and teams
  • Be able to work with Google Suite products
  • Work both independently and as part of a team.

In this role, you will be a part of the Pipeline Engineering team , of the Energy Services , based in Houston Office and have the opportunity to work on the broad range of renewable, natural gas or oil projects.

What a day at EXP has in store for you
  • A role performing engineering design work as the everyday task. This is not a role for someone to provide direction and coordinate others to perform the work.
  • Oil and gas project experience, understanding of CFR Parts 192 and 195.
  • Problem solving skills and ability to find resolutions with limited oversight.
  • Civil Engineers can perform with very limited oversight - design foundations, design supports, perform load calculations, complete concrete and rebar strength calculations and design, perform stormwater calculations and prepare SWPPPs, etc.
  • Understanding of CAD and GIS applications and how they can be used to assist in completing work deliverables.
  • Ability to coordinate with additional staff to complete tasks and finalize deliverables.
  • Can provide direction to drafting designers to complete design drawings including P&IDs, plot plans, plan and section drawings, isometrics, bill of materials, etc without management oversight.
  • Can provide direction to drafting designers to complete design drawings including site plan, grading plans, foundation, pipe supports, etc without management oversight.
  • Can provide direction to complete data analysis, drawing and mapping assignments without management oversight.
  • Interacts with various personnel, clients and stakeholders during assigned projects.

  • Can assist with proposal writing, understands scope development and the preparation of execution plans.
  • Ability to travel for field exercises, reconnaissance, field truthing, verification, surveys, etc. as projects dictate.
  • Willingness to learn new engineering fields of study and technologies and support other professional disciplines to build upon current experience level and increase the engineering team's knowledge base and productivity.
  • Understanding of safe work practices, support project specific safety plans and willingness to participate in the workplace safety initiatives and culture.

The mission at Baker Engineering and Risk Consultants, Inc. (BakerRisk) is to manage hazards and risks through high-value services, products, and research. The BakerRisk Protective Structures Section completes this mission through the evaluation and design of structures exposed to extreme loading conditions such as blast, thermal, and high-velocity impacts. We design buildings to protect people in potentially hazardous working environments, design manufacturing bays to contain the effects of accidental explosions, and collaborate with government agencies to design spaces to protect occupants from potential hostile threats. Our design and evaluation approaches continue to be validated and expanded through research, testing, and the investigation of catastrophic events such as explosions, fires, and toxic material releases. BakerRisk operates two test facilities, the Wilfred E. Baker Test Facility and Box Canyon Test Facility, where both scale and full-scale testing of building structures can be completed. BakerRisk has a collaborative work environment where coordination with other technical disciplines at BakerRisk, Process Safety and Blast Effects, is encouraged to develop a solution to manage hazards and risk.

An immediate full-time position is available for an entry-level Blast Resistant Structural Engineer in our Houston, Texas office. Successful candidates require a BS in Civil/Structural Engineering (MS preferred).

Duties and Responsibilities

Successful candidates require a BS in Civil/Structural Engineering (MS preferred). Education must include the analysis and design of structures (steel, concrete, and masonry) using simplified and advanced methods. Candidate should also be experienced (0 to 5 years) or demonstrate a strong interest in one or more of the following areas: structural design of buildings, structural dynamics due to impulsive loads, structural evaluation of existing buildings, forensics engineering, structural analysis software, and/or finite element analysis.

Candidate must be able to perform specific tasks as assigned by project managers of limited scope. Typical tasks will require knowledge of structural engineering principles. Advanced techniques will require knowledge/learning of nonlinear design of construction materials including steel, reinforced concrete, masonry, wood, etc.

Tasks assigned will include nonlinear blast response analysis, detailed structural design and design concept development, preparation of design specifications, research/accident investigation support, structural drawing development and review, and reviewing numerical calculations.

Education

Master's Degree or above with a focus in structural engineering. A Bachelor's degree may be acceptable with prior work experience as a structural engineer. Work ethic and office professionalism consistent with BakerRisk's high technical standards is a must.

Required Skills

  • Previous background in structural engineering is preferred, including experience with developing Structural Drawing packages (plans, elevations, details)
  • Willingness to travel 25%-30% of the time.
  • Must possess excellent communication and writing skills.
