Job Description

Position: Conservation Scientist

Summary: The Plant Research Division of the Center for Conservation and Research of Endangered Wildlife (CREW) at the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden is seeking a Conservation Scientist to assist in the in vitro propagation, cryo-banking, and restoration of multiple threatened plant species.

The CREW Plant Research Division is a global leader in the conservation of exceptional plant species using tissue culture propagation and cryopreservation and is seeking an experienced plant scientist to help expand our plant conservation activities. This role reports directly to the Director of Plant Research and offers an opportunity to shape the future of exceptional plant conservation while contributing to the conservation and protection of rare plant species.

Essential Functions

Collections management and use
  • Manage CREW's In Vitro Collection of rare plants, including regular subculturing and data-taking
  • Bank collections of shoot tips, seeds, pollen, and other tissues in our CryoBioBank
  • Produce plants for restorations and outplantings in collaboration with CREW's Conservation Horticulturist and partner organizations
Research
  • Develop tissue culture initiation, propagation, and cryopreservation protocols for a variety of threatened species.
  • Design and carry-out experiments to improve the effectiveness, efficiency, and/or basic knowledge of in vitro propagation and cryo-banking
  • Analyze data, interpret results, generate graphs, and produce reports for a variety of stakeholders
  • Develop and write research grant proposals. Write and contribute to peer-reviewed publications
  • Disseminate results at scientific meetings
Other Duties
  • Participate in regular scientific outreach activities with the general public, students, donors, and other professionals
  • Mentor volunteers, interns, and graduate students
  • Maintain clean and organized workspaces
Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Ph.D. in a plant-related field of biology with a strong background in plant biology and/or plant physiology
  • Experience with plant tissue culture and cryopreservation
  • Demonstrated ability in developing and carrying out scientific research
  • Experience in writing peer-reviewed manuscripts, grant/project reports, and grant proposals
  • Strong understanding of and commitment to principles of conservation biology
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral, and experience in communicating with a wide variety of audiences
  • Strong work ethic and organizational, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
  • Experience in scientific data analysis and interpretation; experience with R statistical computing software preferred
  • Ability to comply with CZBG policies, including drug-free workplace requirements
  • Willingness to participate in occasional off-hours outreach events.

Experience Requirements: Experience in developing plant tissue culture propagation and/or cryopreservation protocols strongly preferred. Candidates with at least 1 year's experience in managing a plant tissue culture and/or cryo collection preferred.

Working Conditions/Other Requirements : Employment is contingent upon passing a drug and nicotine screen and background check. While performing the duties of the job, the incumbent is regularly required to utilize manual dexterity to use computer mouse, keyboard, microscope, and other lab equipment. The incumbent may be exposed to outside weather conditions and must be able to lift/move/carry up to 10 pounds without assistance. Must maintain a valid driver's license with an insurable driving record.

**Your Impact**
+ Lead complex environmental projects ensuring contributors know what they are required to do and by when, preparing and overseeing relevant project budgets, monitoring external events, tracking hours and expenses, ensuring profitability and satisfactory performance, and supervising subcontractors, contract work, and employees.

WSP is currently initiating a search for a full-time Vice President/Connecticut Licensed Environmental Professional to support our environmental operations, in our Shelton and Glastonbury, CT offices. Provides leadership within a sector of organization to ensure environmental science subject matter, technical deliverables, and programs are delivered with a level of quality that meets or exceeds acceptable industry and company standards. Responsible for SME innovation and administration; ensuring corporate compliance with all Local, State, and Federal environmental and safety regulations; and providing pragmatic direction to address current and future environmental science challenges in a rapidly-changing and complex business climate.
**Your Impact**
+ Lead complex environmental projects ensuring contributors know what they are required to do and by when, preparing and overseeing relevant project budgets, monitoring external events, tracking hours and expenses, ensuring profitability and satisfactory performance, and supervising subcontractors, contract work, and employees.
+ Provide proactive and strategic leadership for the scientific discipline and function, offering direction, expertise, and support to ensure project and work site deliverables are successfully achieved within the business sector.

+ Lead technical aspects of contract negotiation, presentations, and meetings.
+ Assist with the preparation of an annual update to business tactical action plans within the specified area.
+ Ensure that scientific discipline certifications, accreditations, and value proposition is developed and continuously improved.
